The non-running Nero Lemania stopwatch used by (unofficial) timekeeper and stadium announcer Norris McWhirter on the occasion of Roger Bannister's world record, the first sub 4-minute mile, Iffley Road, Oxford, 6 May 1954, rubbing and metal tarnishing, 8 cm, preserved in an old pigskin leather case, together with a small archive of related photographs and papers, including 7 photographs of Bannister including one of him crossing the line at Oxford, 5 May 1954, pencil inscription to window mount, 8 x 10cm, photograph of the Bannisters with their two young children and baby, signed 'To Carol & Norris, from The Bannisters', 15 x 10cm, contemporary press photo of the 1954 record day showing Roger Bannister and pacesetter Chris Chataway just before the final lap, 25 x 20cm, plus a later print of similar and three other photos; two autograph letters signed from Roger Bannister to Norris McWhirter and the latter's carbon copy replies, May/June 1951, in one letter McWhirter mentions the 4-mnute mile after watching Bannister in a race, '… Those blistering finishes must be extremely painful. I am convinced that the over-all output of energy comes very close to the magic four minutes', plus an earlier carbon copy letter from McWhirter, 4 May 1951, in which he writes 'I was delighted to see that you have disclaimed all intention of attempting the 4-minute mile until after the Olympics…', plus a related letter from Bannister's 'secretary' Joyce, various typed and photocopied notes on Roger Bannister and the 4-minute mile by McWhirter, plus some related cuttings and sundry items including a much later autograph letter signed from Bannister to McWhirter, 13 January 2001Qty: (Stopwatch & a folder)Footnote: Provenance: From the family of Norris Dewar McWhirter CBE (1925-2004). Norris McWhirter and his twin brother Ross were known internationally for the founding of The Guinness Book of Records, which they wrote and annually updated together for over two decades. McWhirter came to public attention while working for the BBC as a sports commentator. On the day of Bannister's record there were five official timekeepers: W.C.A. Findlay, C.S. Hill, R.G. Hudson, L.R. Richards and W.J. Burfitt, of which Hill and Burfitt's stopwatches have previously been sold at auction. McWhirter, a close friend and training ally of Bannister, also kept time with the stopwatch offered here, and was the stadium announcer. After the race McWhirter famously declared: “Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of Event Number Nine, the One Mile. First, Number Forty-One, R.G. Bannister, of the Amateur Athletic Association, and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which, subject to ratification, will be a new English native, British national, British All-Comers', European, British Empire and world record. The time is three [at which point the rest of the announcement was lost in the roar of the 1,200 crowd] minutes, fifty-nine point four seconds."

Lot 982

* Webb Ellis (William, 1806-1872). English Anglican clergyman and the supposed inventor of rugby football while a pupil at Rugby School. A very rare Autograph Letter Signed, ‘W.W. Ellis’, Brasenose College, [Oxford], 2 July 1827, written while a student at Oxford University, to George Harris, Rugby [School], acknowledging receipt of £60 from the Trustees of Rugby School ‘for the whole of my Exhibition’, some slight toning, 1 page with integral address leaf with Brasenose College seal (and tear), postmark of the same date, a few small stains to blank area above address panel and some adhesion remains to blank recto, 4toQty: (1)Footnote: Provenance: Norris McWhirter (1925-2004), by family descent. Norris McWhirter was a British writer, political activist and television presenter, known most famously for founding, with his brother Ross, the Guinness World Records, which they wrote and annually updated together between 1955 and 1975. George Harris, Rugby School clerk, 1801-1857; members of the Harris family held this post continuously from 1740 to 1949. William Webb Ellis is widely but mistakenly believed to be the founder of the game of rugby, the legend being that in 1823 he picked up the ball during a game of football and ran with it. It was in 1987 that the first rugby world cup occurred and the William Webb Ellis trophy was born. Webb Ellis came up to Brasenose College in 1825, aged 18 and was awarded his BA degree in 1829. He then entered the church, becoming Rector of Magdalen Laver in Essex from 1855. The place of his death remained a mystery until 1959 when Ross McWhirter traced his grave to caveau no. 957 in the cemetery of Vieux Chateau in Menton, France. A copy of a sheet of computer-printed background notes about Webb Ellis which Norris McWhirter submitted to the Daily Telegraph sports editor on 17 November 2003, plus a photograph of the gravestone, is included with the lot. An autograph of extraordinary and mystifying rarity. Only two or three Webb Ellis autograph letters seem to be known, including one held by Rugby School and one at The World Rugby Museum online.

MR. BRAINWASH (Garges-lès-Gonesse, France, 1966)."Follow your dreams", 2020.Mixed media on paper.Signed and dated on the back.Measurements: 126 x 97 cm; 143,5 x 113 cm (frame). The works of Mr. Brainwash mix the American pop art style of Andy Warhol with a street Dadaism of great personality, resulting in an irreverent and groundbreaking art of remarkable similarities with the work of Banksy and Shepard Fairey, among other consolidated urban artists. Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr. Brainwash, entered urban art in the 2000s as an amateur videographer. According to the artist himself, his stage name derives from the fact that "When you watch TV, when you buy clothes, when you get to a bar or a club or when you do anything, how do you get to it? It's all brainwashing, which is why I used to take any kind of brand and put a spin on it". He continues, "I couldn't use my name when I started doing street art, so I remembered Mr. Brainwash and decided to use it." Mr. Brainwash's career developed throughout the 2010s, taking a leap when he starred in the documentary 'Exit through the gift shop' by fellow street artist Banksy, a production for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. His work navigates between worlds of film, celebrity culture, music and sports. Mr. Brainwash has designed album covers for Madonna, Rick Ross and KYGO. His work has been featured in films, television and productions such as Molly's Game, Billions, Shameless and Kardashians. Currently, Mr. Brainwash continues to hold solo exhibitions and projects, creating opportunities to engage the public in the art world. Mr. Brainwash's passion extends his commitment to giving back to the community. His many projects include donating artwork in support of the Los Angeles LGBT center, as well as creating 9/11 memorial murals to honor the victims who died in the attacks. It has also partnered with Product RED to raise AIDS awareness. Brainwash also lends its annual support to organizations such as the Prince's Trust for the benefit of vulnerable youth.

BBC Jane at War, Paul Birkbeck 1939-2019, An open top sports car, pen and ink drawing, 20 x 42 cms.. not signed, 1982 broadcast for BBC2. Jane was a BAFTA winning adaptation of the stories from the iconic Jane strip cartoons that appeared in the Daily Mirror between 1932 and 1959. Paul did some of the background illustrations for the live actor cast which included Glynis Barber as Jane, Max Wall, Frank Thornton and John Bird. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4uLATbrXMc ABOUT PAUL BIRKBECK; an appreciation, written by one of his daughters and published in the Guardian following his death. "My father, Paul Birkbeck, who has died aged 80, was an artist and illustrator whose work is familiar to those of a certain generation brought up on BBC childrens TV programmes such as Crystal Tipps and Alistair, Play School and Jackanory. His distinctive style and keen eye for detail ensured that he became one of the BBCs most-used artists through the 1970s and 80s. Born in Woolwich, south-east London, Paul attended Brighton College and Epsom School ofArt. After completing his national service, he also became the banjo player for the Dedicated Men Jugband, who signed to Pye Records in 1965. The bands single, Boodle Am Shake, did not trouble the charts but Paul soon began designing sleeves for Decca Records. In 1965 working with BBC childrens TV he became a prolific illustrator for its programmes. For Jackanory he illustrated 14 stories, including A Dog So Small (read by Judi Dench) and Peter Pan, (some in this sale), as well as the BBC Sunday afternoon Bible stories series In the Beginning. His work for Jackanory continued for many years. He created the memorable opening titles for The Vikings in 1980, presented by Magnus Magnusson, and the iconic Miss Marple series, starring Joan Hickson. Paul also drew the backgrounds for the ground-breaking TV series Jane, starring Glynis Barber, which mixed cartoon backgrounds with live actors and was based on the 1940s comic strip of the same name. (some in this sale). In 1991, as well as supplying illustrations, he was in front of the camera playing himself each week in the BBCs six-part childrens TV history programme Now Then, an educational show that cleverly brought our ancestors to life. Paul taught illustration at Leicester Polytechnic, Epsom College and the Royal College of Art, but continued to work in TV, including delivering the titles for the Stanley Baxter Show on Channel 4. He branched out into book illustration with Salman Rushdies 1990 childrens fairy tale Haroun and the Sea of Stories, for which his lavish pictures were much lauded, not least by Rushdie. My father spent the latter part of his life on personal commissions. His work appeared at the Keith Chapman Gallery, London, in Royal Academy summer shows and Sunday Times watercolour exhibitions between 2003 and 2008, and in the Mall Galleries Discerning Eye exhibitions. PROVENANCE The artworks in this sale have been consigned by his family. NOTES: The pictures in this sale were prepared in various mediums often used by the artist and often in conjunction with one another, including, pen and ink, crayon, water-colour, gouache, pastel, and oil and acrylic paints on card or on paper. The auctioneers acknowledge the help of his family in cataloguing this collection, and where-ever known each picture has been listed under its broadcast designation. but the vendors do not guarantee that all attributions in this respect are correct. So hängen meine Bilder jetzt in Frankie’s Sports Bar in Miami! 2015 ging es dann um die Ausstattung des Adena Golf Clubs in Orlando, der mit 30 meiner Bilder bestückt ist. Insgesamt hat Frank 60 Bilder von mir, die meisten befinden sich eben in Amerika. VOKA, 1964 geboren, begreift seine Kunst als "Spontanrealismus": er hält Momentaufnahmen fest, die ihn berühren.
