S.C.H `Sammy` Davis (1887-1981) DAVIS DRIVING HIS ALVIS TO VICTORY IN THE 1927 SIX HOUR RACE AT BROOKLANDS Signed l.l., oil on canvas 46 x 51cm and a Letter from Sammy Davis to the vendor concerning the Brooklands painting and discussing painting for him the crash scene from his win at Le Mans in 1927 (2). Sydney Charles Houghton ‘Sammy’ Davis was a British racing driver and journalist. He started his career as an apprentice with the Daimler Company and following WWI he became sports editor at The Autocar. He competed in motor races in the 1920s and became a member of the ‘Bentley Boys’. In 1927, he won both the Six Hour race at Brooklands, and more famously the 24 Hours at Le Mans, despite a crash causing damage to the Bentley early in the race. As vice-president of the Aston Martin Owners Club, in 1935 he designed their ‘wings’ badge and did much to promote British motor racing post WWII. In his later years he moved to Guildford, where he used his skills to train police drivers, as well as writing articles and painting.

A scarce Bing liner A 40cm long pressed steel and tinplate single screw liner, believed made c1920. Sports a red hull, black and cream sides above the waterline and light brown representing a wooden upper deck. The superstructure comprises 2 decks with extensive fenestration, then a small open bridge at deck 3 accessed by a short ladder aft. The 4 funnels are about 2.5cm high, the one accommodating the key being missing. On the upper deck are 2 vents for’ard, bases for main masts for’ard and aft and a stowage cover aft. The masts and rudder are missing except for 2 mast stubs. A 5cm bracket secured under the hull keeps the model upright. The clockwork motor operates but does not turn the screw. GC for age, significant chipping, paintwork a little crazed in places, requires cleaning. See Plate28.
