In the Heuer catalogue it was described as a special limited edition watch and was first delivered in a miniature red racing helmet to celebrate Lauda's achievement. The case design was inspired by the Carrera automatic chronograph and was available either in chrome or black cases. The first Monza generation was provided exclusively with a Calibre 15 and characteristic small second-hand stood at 10 o'clock. The name 'Monza' above the classical Heuer Logo in the upper part of the dial was a contrast to the Autavia, Carrera and Calculator models using the Calibre 15, where the name was put at 9 o'clock. The dial was surrounded by a pulse- and tachymeter scale, both very important for the world of motor sports. On Monza models, reference and serial numbers were engraved to the case back different from other Heuer model series where they are often between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock. The Monza was meant to attract a younger target group with its stylish look. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 364

Late 2nd-early 3rd century AD. A complete bronze female type sports mask of Robinson's Type E and of Mater Castrorum type, composed of two parts: the face mask with female features, the lips slightly parted, nose with ventilation holes, openwork eyes with delicately pierced rings forming the irises, hatched detailing to eyelashes and eyebrows, the falling wavy hairstyle that of a Roman Matrona, adorned with diadems, garlands and other jewellery, the hair divided into two sections, the first section framing the face and the second section worn as a wig over the other, attachment holes to the lower edge; the back part of the mask covered with curly hair, a small bun at the nape of the neck, the short neck guard with holes for fastening the lining, a fastening rivet to the top of the skull flanked by two small horns. See Robinson, R., The Armour of Imperial Rome, New York, 1975; Garbsch, J., Römische Paraderustüngen, München, 1979; D'Amato, R. and Negin, A., Decorated Roman Armour, London, 2017.890 grams total, 26-28cm (10 1/4 - 11"). From an important East Anglian collection of arms and armour; acquired from a Dutch private collection in the 1990s; previously in a Swiss family collection since before 1980; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10301-168686. As explained by Prof. A. Negin, female masks were the result of the ceremonial aspect of life in the Roman imperial army and were a cultural phenomenon. Consequently, it is rather difficult to interpret the purpose of each specific mask; however, in general, it is possible to discuss their basic functions associated with various ceremonial practices. Our mask, which finds assonance with a face-mask helmet of the same period from a private collection in Plymouth, Providence Academy, or with the three-part Pfrondorf helmet (D’Amato-Negin, 2017, figs.170, 262), could have been either of the well known types of female mask helmets in the Roman army, either a stylised representation of the Gorgon Medusa, or most probably representing the ‘Mother of the Camp’ (Mater Castrorum"). [2] [A video of this lot is available to view on TimeLine Auctions website.] Fine condition, restored.

Donald Moss (American, 1920 - 2010) "Babe Ruth" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Babe Ruth stamp issue of July 6, 1983. In 1895, George Herman Ruth began life in the humble surroundings of his home in Baltimore, Maryland. Throughout his youth, he excelled in many sports, but soon developed an exceptional talent for baseball. In fact, his talent was so incredible that, in 1914, he was persuaded to play professional baseball for the Baltimore Orioles ... being promised a $600 a year salary, plus his first new suit of clothes. During the first several years of his professional career, Ruth's teammates gave him the nickname "Babe," mainly because he was so shy and naive to the ways of the world. However, his innocence did not stop Babe Ruth from becoming one of the world's greatest athletes of all time. During his remarkable career, which stretched from 1914 to 1935, "the Babe" gained great expertise in a number of areas. He was one of the best pitchers of his day ... credited with pitching many "no-hitters." In addition, he was equally talented in the outfield. However, above all other accomplishments, Babe Ruth will always be remembered as one of the greatest home run hitters in baseball history. During his outstanding career, Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs and is credited with over 2,200 runs batted in ... a record that earned him the title, "The Sultan of Swat." Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B08106)

Lot 498

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Florida Manatee" Signed lower right. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Masonite.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Florida Manatee stamp issued October 2, 1996. Slow-moving and serene, the manatee is the graceful cow of the sea. Found in shallow coastal waters, estuaries and slow-flowing rivers, it spends its lazy days grazing on aquatic vegetation just beneath the water's surface. Massive, thick-skinned and nearly hairless, the manatee's slate-grey body sports paddlelike forelimbs and a spatulate tail -- a figure which, ironically, likely gave rise to the folklore of mermaids. Not particularly gregarious, the manatee usually lives singly or in small family groups, but can sometimes form herds of up to a score. With no natural predators, this ocean giant has retained a placid temperament and won't fight to defend itself or its calf. Unfortunately, since Spanish explorers first came to the Florida region in the 16th century, man has become the manatee's first true enemy. Although hunting this peaceful creature has been outlawed for over a century, the encroachment of mankind on the manatee's habitat still threatens its existence. Many fall victim to the unforgiving blades of outboard motors, while others often drown in the intake gates of water control structures. Still others are scared away from their warm-water havens by human intruders, fleeing into colder waters where a stay of only a few hours often proves lethal to these temperature-sensitive mammals. With only some 1,000 manatees left in the wild, mankind must take special care to preserve these gentle giants of the Caribbean. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 14.75 in. Unframed. Offered from preservation within a single ownership for the past 51 years - The ex-Sir Robert Ropner/Rodney 'Connaught' Clarke/Bill Turnbull1937 Bugatti Type 57 Surbaisse 3.3-Litre Four-Seat Sports Grand Routier 'Dulcie'Coachwork by Corsica of Cricklewoood, LondonRegistration no. DUL 351Chassis no. 57503Engine no. 16S*Based from period upon the main rails of an ex-works team 1936 Bugatti Type 57G 'Tank' sports-racing car, lightweight chassis frame*The T57S - Bugatti's finest combination of performance, comfort and drivability*Only five highly capable and competent owners from new*The last known Type 57S with Corsica coachwork in remarkably original order*The vast majority of mechanical restoration complete and ready to run*The magnate's supercar based on works Bugatti 'Tank' streamliner chassis railsHere BONHAMS is delighted to offer not only one of the most significant Bugatti Type 57 Grand Routier cars to have survived from period, but also one with an outstandingly significant history. Most notably this uniquely important Bugatti has, in effect, been preserved for the past 51 years within the single ownership of an exceptionally well-qualified British-based engineer and Bugatti marque enthusiast – the late Bill Turnbull – and it has now been established that its distinctively lightened chassis – adopted as its basis by the Bugatti factory at Molsheim during the winter of 1936-37 - re-uses mainframe members of the type designed for the renowned works-entered Bugatti Type 57G 'Tank' streamlined sports-racing cars. These super-successful aerodynes dominated both the 1936 French Grand Prix and subsequent Marne GP before setting astonishingly high-speed class world records over a range of distances and durations. While this important car's long years in Mr Turnbull's ownership have seen it mechanically restored and rebuilt to his uncompromising personal standards – since he was Chief Engineer of the renowned JCB company's Hydrapower Division during this period – its British-built Corsica bodywork, dating from 1937, has been preserved virtually untouched. In fact '57503' as offered here is believed bodily to be the last surviving 'unrestored' Type 57S. Only some 42 of these Bugatti Type 57S cars were produced in their limited run at the Molsheim factory. They were powered by an unsupercharged 3.3-litre, twin- overhead-camshaft straight-8 cylinder engine with dry-sump lubrication, and magneto ignition. This power unit drove to the live rear axle via a two-plate clutch and 4-speed manual gearbox. The rear axle was mounted on the forward ends of two reversed quarter-elliptic leaf springs and, unique to this model, passed through two large apertures in the deep-section chassis side members instead of being slung beneath them. This feature lowered the car considerably, reducing its centre of gravity height and enhancing its roadholding compared to that of the far more numerous longer, taller and heavier standard Type 57 . In fact the 'S' suffix of '57S' is generally accepted to indicate 'surbaissé' – the French term for 'low' or 'lowered' - while the alternative 'Sport' is also widely applied. The hollow front axle was suspended upon two leaf springs, each passing through the axle tube in typical Bugatti fashion. However, the Type 57S front axle was built up from two halves, with a centreline joint featuring external left- and right- hand threads supported internally by a double-ended tapering mandrel. These two halves are joined by a double-threaded external collar, permitting a limited degree of independent rotation as the springs flexed.Highly efficient, sophisticated and complex De Ram shock absorbers damped suspension front and rear. Large-diameter finned brake drums housed cable-operated alloy brake shoes. Bugatti '57503's electrics were principally by Scintilla, the windscreen wiper motor a Bosch WS12. As delivered to its first owner ex-works in 1937 the car was equipped with Scintilla headlamps, Lucas front side lights, an Ace Cornercraft rear light box, and a chrome-plated Notek 'Drive Master' driving lamp. The car also featured a Ki-Gass starting system. As discussed by Turnbull correspondents (and fellow Bugattistes) Leonard Potter and Ronnie Symondson, it seems probable this system initially had only two jets adjacent to the carburetor, subsequently altered to four - as surviving on the car today.Factory records show that Colonel Sorel - Bugatti's UK agent based in Brixton, London - placed an order with the factory on November 7, 1936, to fulfil a sale just secured by Jack Barclay Ltd. A copy of the original Jack Barclay Sales Record Card survives in this car's accompanying history file – a rare provenance document indeed. Their new customer was Mr Robert Ropner (later knighted in 1959 as Sir Robert Ropner), 28-year-old scion of the Ropner shipping-line family.Bugatti shipped 'Chassis Nu' ('unbodied rolling chassis') '57503' to England on January 29, 1937, £850 being the invoiced sum paid by Jack Barclay Ltd on February 2. They took Mr Ropner's Mercedes-Benz 540K in part- exchange valued at £800, plus a balancing cheque of £450 9s 3d - Sir Robert's 1969 memory of the price having been £1,250 being correct to within a few shillings and pence.

The Ex-Bill Turnbull1913 Panhard et Levassor 2.2-Litre 12hp X19Registration no. SV 6925Chassis no. 35738Engine no. 35738*Offered from just one ownership of over 65 years*Extensively restored in recent years - now close to completion*Accompanied by a fantastically-detailed related archive*Complete with perfect provenance from new*2155cc 4-cylinder engine - superbly drivableFootnotes:The 12hp Panhard et Levassor X19, UK registration 'SV 6925', is from the same stable as the 1937 Bugatti 57S also offered here. Together they comprise 'The Bill Turnbull Collection', and both reflect the outstanding qualities of their highly enthusiastic, immensely experienced and competent engineer owner in very similar ways.Twin brothers Bob and Bill Stuart Turnbull were born and lived on a fruit and dairy farm in the rural community of Galloway, Alexandra, South Island New Zealand. Their father Alistair Stuart Turnbull, who had served in the First War, was a very practical man and a skilled cabinet maker; sadly, their mother Mary died suddenly when the boys were only seven. From this background emerged two intelligent, self-reliant, capable and industrious boys, and both went on to have successful engineering careers. Before and after WW2 New Zealand was a happy hunting ground for veteran cars and community of enthusiasts which flourishes to this day was already emerging. Recognising their interests, at the age of 16 the two boys were given a 1904 Humberette, on which that they practised their skills and to which the origins of their lifelong passion can be traced. Later, during the 1950s, Bob bought the remains of a 1907 Sizaire et Naudin which he restored, kept, together with the Humberette, and used almost daily up to his death in 2012. Meanwhile Bill in 1954 bought the 1913 Panhard now offered here, which he also kept for the rest of his life The twin brothers also both bought and restored Bugattis; Bob from 1958 an open Gangloff-bodied Type 57 and Bill from 1969 his 1937 Corsica-bodied Bugatti Type 57S. In addition Bill bought and worked upon a Type 23 Brescia Bugatti which he kept from 1961 to 1992. They were indeed identical twins...Against this background one might expect the Panhard to be something special, and it most certainly is. Bill Turnbull bought the car in 1954. Research within his personal archive related to this Panhard reveals two original receipts, recording that he first paid Mr Roger Barratt a deposit of £2 and on May 30, 1954 he followed up with the agreed balance of £13. He immediately set to work tackling jobs from which the average owner would recoil. There is a striking £1 2s 0d invoice 'To balance Panhard crankshaft' from Canterbury University College, where Bill and Bob had studied engineering, dated April 30, 1956. Mr Turnbull used his reliable Panhard quite intensively up to 1960 and there are many fine photographs showing him and the car covering that period. With the Panhard had come rare and interesting provenance documentation which Bill Turnbull later supplemented with his own research. The history file also incudes copies of published accounts of Bill and Bob's adventurous veteran car journeys, a published article by Bill himself and rare original Panhard driver's hand books in both English and French. The surviving original private-car registration document was issued to Miss E.G. Gardner by Christchurch City Council on May 15, 1914. No engine or chassis numbers were required to be entered but plate number '6987' was assigned, and regulations relating to letter size and spacing were printed on the reverse. A new Vehicle Registration Act came into force in 1924 and a replacement certificate was issued to Mrs E.G. Williams (née Gardner) in Christchurch on January 23, 1924. This certificate has also been carefully preserved. It is a wonderful document. In addition to recording engine, chassis and plate numbers it bears on the reverse the names and addresses of all subsequent owners up to and including Roger Barratt and William Stuart Turnbull. Mrs Williams appears to have kept the Panhard from 1914 until 1933 when it passed to Ford Motors of Christchurch, New Zealand.Amazingly, but typically, Bill Turnbull sought out Mrs Williams and drove to meet her in the Panhard. She recognised her old car and sent confirmation by post, enclosing a 'snap' of the car taken during her ownership. Mr Turnbull preserved her note, a small photograph of a boy straining with the starting handle and original envelope is post-marked August 15, 1957.But what of the car? What is its specification? What is a 12hp Panhard like to drive? The high reputation and commanding stature enjoyed by the company during the pioneering years of motoring is well known but the above questions can be answered very fully and specifically in relation to Bill Turnbull's car.The 1924 Registration Document confirms that 'SV 6925' was owned by Andrew Affleck Anderson from June 16, 1947 to December 18, 1951. Andrew Affleck's article 'The Edwardians' appeared in the December 1949 edition of the New Zealand magazine 'Sports Car' accompanied by a photograph of himself in the car. In that article he described his experience of what became Bill Turnbull's car. A verbatim extract from his article follows:It is obviously impossible to begin a series on Edwardians without describing a Panhard first of all. This makes things easier for me since I am the proud owner of one of these cars, but since it is a characteristic example of the medium-priced continental Edwardian I hope I may be excused for starting with my own machine. The car is a 1913 Model rated at 12 R.A.C horse-power and one of the last of the poppet valve Panhards. It is in original condition save for fitting of electric lights. It is, therefore, not one of the famous Panhards of earlier years but it nevertheless retains many characteristics of a race-bred car of the period. The engine is a four-cylinder (bore and stroke 70 x 140=approx..2 litres) with side valves, magneto ignition and fully automated carburettor of Panhard et Levassor patent.Beautifully finished internally the engine peaks at 1500 r.p.m. with normal cruising speed of 1000 r.p.m.; a massive built-up crankshaft is carried on three wide bearings in the cast aluminium crankcase and is splash lubricated as are all working parts; the connecting rods and domed hour-glass pistons. Though lubrication is by splash the oil circulates through a cooler and is automatically replenished from a reservoir. Water circulation is by pump and cooling is most efficient. Power is taken via a rather primitive plate clutch to a four-speed gearbox with right hand control and thence through a spring connection and torque tube to a 3.3:1 rear end. A very advanced feature is that the clutch is totally enclosed and is in unit with the engine and gearbox. On the road she is a delight to handle; the steering is typical of the period being very positive and high geared and the gears though tricky are soon mastered and a very close ratio thrid and top provide a lot of innocent fun in rolling country!!Though 1000 revs is normal cruising speed and equals 30 m.p.h. between 45 and 50 m.p.h. is possible without any bother and the motor runs very smoothly right up to peak revs. Chief attraction lies in the phenomenal power at very low revs. That make it suitable for almost any trials work in spite of that 3.3:1 back axel!! Even the two-wheel metal-lined brakes give considerable stopping power and it takes some brakes to pin down all that 'avoir-dupois' punctually. Her chief features are typical of the period being effortless cruising at very low revolutions and pulling a very high gear ratio, hard positive suspension, hair-line steering, extremely roomy and comfortable coachwork, in fact a c... He joined the service in 1921, held a variety of posts and gained wide experience. An officer of great physical courage and determination. A keen outdoor man and a good shot, keen on all kinds of field sports.” The report continues with details given by another officer, “I came to Burma with Mr Barron in 1921 on the same ship. His temperament which was most pleasant and normal in 1921 (and later in 1926 when I met him at home on leave), came to have become somewhat bitter in the course of the years but this did not detract from his general all round ability which was of high order, although it discarded sometimes a certain amount of forbearance on the part of colleagues and superiors. By his subordinates Mr Barron was held in great respect and awe, no one took and liberties with him. Mr Barron served with me as District Superintendent of Police when I was Deputy Commissioner, Mandalay in 1938. I cannot speak to highly of the magnificent work he did in the riots. His transfer from Mandalay on Political grounds embittered Mr Barron greatly. I recommended him for the Kings Police Medal but eventually after a lapse of 3 years he got only the Burma Police Medal – another disappointment”. William James Barron of Kineraig Greville Park Avenue Ashtead Surrey died 20th August 1944 at University College Hospital, Grafton Way, London WC1. The Burma Police Medal was instituted in 1937 and abolished in 1948. The award was given to both Burmese and European recipients, it is believed only 32 of the approximate 140 issued were to Europeans such as William Barron.
