HENRY SCOTT TUKE, RA, RWS (1858-1929) BLUE-JACKETS YARN signed and dated 1905, watercolour heightened with white, 24.5 x 45.5cm Recorded in the artist`s Register under R407. The models were Harry Cleave and Bert White. It was sold for £42. Provenance: with Anthony Mitchell, Nottingham, from whom bought by the present vendor, c1985 (£13,500). Exhibited: Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, Spring 1904. The present watercolour is one of three mentioned in Tuke`s diary entry for 6 Februry 1904: "took up three watercolours `Blue-Jackets in a Country Inn`, `All the News of the Voyage` and `A Lowestoft Boat` to RWS`. The two models, Bert White and Harry Cleave were apprentices at Falmouth Docks and were frequently in trouble for playing practical jokes, or pretending to be injured. They were frequently laid-off which allowed them to model for Tuke and they appear in many of his most important pictures painted between 1901 and 1904, including Ruby, Gold and Malachite (R374, 1901), The Run Home (R380, 1901-02), Noonday Heat (R382, 1902, exhibited at the RA the following year), The Stowaway (R396,1903) and The Three Companions (R484, 1905). We are grateful for the assistance of John Tonkin of Falmouth Art Gallery in the cataloguing of this watercolour.++In fine condition with solitary tiny spot of foxing.

Sold by direction of the executors of J L Parsons Esq A 1931 NORTON CJ 348CC MOTORCYCLE frame number 38723, engine number CJ 1479, bore 71mm/88mm with overhead camshaft, gearbox number 1095, fish-tail silencer, Lucas King of the Road headlamp with built-in ammeter, Smith`s speedometer, leather covered saddle and pillion, tool bags and number plates, stove enamelled in black and painted in silver, lined in red and black, registration number GO 1784 The Norton factory records establish that the present machine was despatched on 15 April 1931 to the dealer Taylor Matterson of Balham, South London and was sold on 24 April to G Whaley Esq of 123 Bernerley Road, Clapham Common, SW11. Since the registration number GO was issued in London from March to May 1931 and that the dealers, Taylor Matterson were based in Balham, there is no doubt that the present, non-transferable, registration prefix GO 1784 is the original. The Norton CJ, in production to 1939, was the junior version of the 490cc model CS1. This superbly restored motorcycle when purchased privately from a local source by the late owner in 1990 in a `dilapidated` condition, was completely original. It had been kept for many years in dry storage. In 2000 it was the subject of a full scheme of restoration undertaken to a very high standard by specialists Sammy Miller Motorcycles in Hampshire. Since completion of the restoration it has been ridden only very infrequently and not at all in the last few years. Sold with valid SORN (expires 30 September 2010), Vintage Motor Cycle Club Limited`s Certificate of Dating and a large file of correspondence and research by the late owner, full details of the restoration and photographs, invoices, valuation, photocopy of Norton Maintenance Instructions and other publications. ++++
