AN AMBER-GLAZED POTTERY HORSE WITH WHITE-GLAZED BRAIDED MANE AND TAILChina, Tang Dynasty Style, but dating to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Standing foursquare on the rectangular base, the head lowered and turned slightly to the side, mouth agape, with flaring nostrils and bulging eyes, the forelock parted in the center, the braided mane swept to one side, the tail docked and bound, the muscular body covered in an amber glaze, the forelock, mane, tail, and hooves picked out in a white slip glaze.Provenance: Old French private collection.Condition: Overall fine condition with wear and firing flaws, minor losses and chipping. The glaze with inherent crackling. The tail with an old repair.Weight: 6.2 kgDimensions: Length 48 cm, Height 47 cmExpert's note: Following the Hijra in AD 622, the Arabian horse spread across the known world of the time, and became recognized as a distinct, named breed. The Arabian horse is often found expressing Rabicano patterns, sometimes leading to a white tail as seen in the present depiction. This type of horse must have been extremely expensive in China during the Tang dynasty. It is therefore highly likely that whoever owned one was of very high status and had a model of their personal horse placed in their tomb as a grave good after their death.

The present lot was one of their first works of Asian art, received as payment for legal services, from the prominent Styrian brewer Sigurd Reininghaus.Condition: Extensive wear, creases, small losses, minor tears, soiling, staining.Dimensions: Size incl. mounting 128 x 42 cm, Image size 55 x 31.5 cmThe present lot depicts the military hero and God of War Guan Yu (died 219), who became glorified in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, attributed to Luo Guanzhong. The subject represents an episode from Guan Yu's life when he memorized in only a few nights the Confucian Classics of The Spring and Autumn Annals and The Commentary of Zuo. His feat of memory made him an admirable model for the literati and, as well as becoming a God of War in 1615 with state backing, he also became a God of Literature.Auction result comparison: Compare with a considerably larger hanging scroll by Ding Yunpeng of the same subject and from roughly the same period, at Christie's Hong Kong in Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy on 25 November 2019, lot 966, sold for HKD 2,500,000.

The chairs with minor old repairs and touchups. Overall as expected, commensurate with age and presenting very well.Weight: 2,157 g (the table), 501.8 g and 535.2 g (the chairs), 757 g (the offerings)Dimensions: Size 28.2 x 17 x 13.4 cm (the table), Height 17.2 cm and 17.4 cm (the chairs)Expert's note: According to Jessica Harrison-Hall, Head of the China section, Curator of Chinese Ceramics and Decorative Arts at the British Museum, related "models of folding armchairs made in metal, stone and wood have been excavated from middle and late Ming tombs". Such chairs appear frequently to have been placed in these tombs, belonging to members of the aristocracy and scholarly elite. "Two models of folding armchairs, one of bronze and one of tin were excavated in the Ding Ling, the tomb of the Wanli emperor (1573-1619). Another similar model of a folding armchair with a textile covering, carved from stone, was excavated from a tomb at Tongliang county, Sichuan." This chair was discovered near a small rectangular table laden with an assortment of model food dishes, which suggests that folding armchairs were used for dining.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related horseshoe-back folding armchair, dated circa 1550-1600, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1937,0716.135.Auction result comparison: Compare a related group, also with Sancai glaze and dated to the Ming dynasty, at Christie's New York in Fine Chinese Ceramics, Paintings and Works of Art on 21 September 2000, lot 305, sold for USD 4,465.5% or 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU. Fine Chinese Ceramics, Paintings and Works of Art 2000年9月21日 lot 305, 售價USD 4,465。

Peruvian or Bolivian school of the 19th century."Allegory of Peruvian-Bolivian unionism".Polychrome metal plate on both sides.Silver frame.Measurements: 7 x 5,5 cm (plaque); 11 x 7,6 cm (frame). This is a medallion with a metal plate polychromed on both sides which allegorically represents Peruvian-Bolivian unionism. On the obverse, the artist shows the image of the Virgin of Candelaria crowned with the Child, a strictly symmetrical composition of Baroque heritage that does not lose the naturalism or the contained dynamism that reveals the taste of that period. A break of glory serves as a backdrop for the representation of the Virgin and Child, flanked at the base by the flags of Peru and Bolivia waving majestically above a pompous cloud. The souls of the damned, probably an allusion to the anti-unionists, observe this honourable scene burning in the flames of hell. On the back, the artist painstakingly depicts the coronation of the Virgin of Mercy at the hands of Christ and a bishop wearing a mitre. The dove of the Holy Spirit completes a completely narrative composition, technically derived from the stylistic concepts assimilated in the colonial process. However, it can be seen in this work that, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of the independence and political opening up of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity. The technical virtuosity and meticulousness in the depiction of each figure stands out. As already mentioned, the medallion iconographically alludes to Peruvian-Bolivian unionism (or Peruvian-Bolivian nationalism), an initially political and social and later economic trend that emerged in the 19th century, at the beginning of the independence of South American countries from the Spanish empire. This ideology advocated the union of Peru and Bolivia for historical, economic, social and political reasons of both territories before American independence.

The Virgin is portrayed at this moment after the death of her Son, suffering and feeling deep pain which is symbolically represented in the form of a sword piercing her heart. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin has its roots in medieval times, and was especially widespread among the Servite Order, founded in 1233. There are many and varied iconographic representations whose central theme is the Virgin Mary in her Sorrowful aspect, the first of which depicts her next to the Child Jesus, who sleeps oblivious to the future suffering that awaits him. The devotional image is inscribed in an oval around the perimeter of which the legend ECCE MATER TUA (Here is your mother) can be read.It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebusier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and political openness in some of the colonies, several artists began to depict a new model of painting with its own identity.

Spanish school, follower of DIEGO RODRIGEZ DE SILVA Y VELÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1599 - Madrid,1660); 17th century."The Jester Sebastián de Morra".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.It presents damages in the pictorial surface.Measurements: 40 x 26 cm.This work replicates the well-known portrait of Sebastián de Morra nicknamed "the cousin", which was painted by Velázquez around the year 1645. The original work is currently in the Prado Museum in Madrid. In both pieces we see the representation of the jester of King Philip IV, who at first formed part of the court of the Cardinal Infante Don Fernando of Austria, and after his death moved to the protection of Prince Baltasar Carlos, who bequeathed him several objects in his will. Both portraits have the same composition, with the jester in the centre of the scene, seated against a neutral background that gives the figure all the prominence. Despite the damage that can be seen in this work, and the tonal darkness that does not allow all the details to be made out, it is possible to see the suit with lace at the neck, a symbol of distinction and royal protection that the sitter enjoyed, as this type of garment was forbidden for anyone who did not belong to the aristocracy. The work belongs to a series of portraits painted by Velázquez with the intention of decorating the secondary or transitional rooms of the palace (corridors, staircases, etc.). This set of portraits has generated great interest throughout the history of art, and has therefore been widely debated, with theories such as that these works were painted by Velázquez with the intention of dignifying the sitters and criticising the society of the time.Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) was the leading artist of the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He began painting in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer form characterised by bold brushstrokes. In addition to numerous interpretations of scenes of historical and cultural importance, he painted dozens of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). Velázquez's work became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. In the 20th century, artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon paid homage to Velázquez by reinterpreting some of his most iconic images.
