Spanish school ca.1800. After BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO (Seville, 1617 - Cadiz, 1682).Los niños de la concha" ("Children of the Shell").Oil on canvas.Period frame.Size: 108 x 130 cm; 117 x 140 cm (frame). This painting follows faithfully and with great skill the model that Murillo made around 1670, currently conserved in the Prado Museum, which comes from the royal collection and which represents Jesus as a child with Saint John the Baptist. It is one of the painter's most popular works, as it combines a theme very much to the taste of popular religiosity with a naturalistic treatment and a special mastery in the treatment of children, something characteristic of the style of Murillo, who is considered one of the best painters of children in Spanish art.Little is known of Murillo's childhood and youth, except that he lost his father in 1627 and his mother in 1628, for which reason he was taken into the care of his brother-in-law. Around 1635 he must have begun his apprenticeship as a painter, most likely with Juan del Castillo, who was married to a cousin of his. This working and artistic relationship lasted about six years, as was customary at the time. After his marriage in 1645 he embarked on what was to be a brilliant career that gradually made him the most famous and sought-after painter in Seville. The only trip he is known to have made is documented in 1658, when Murillo was in Madrid for several months. It is conceivable that while at court he kept in touch with the painters who lived there, such as Velázquez, Zurbarán and Cano, and that he had access to the collection of paintings in the Royal Palace, a magnificent subject of study for all the artists who passed through the court. Despite the few documentary references to his mature years, we know that he enjoyed a comfortable life, which enabled him to maintain a high standard of living and have several apprentices. Having become the city's leading painter, surpassing even Zurbarán in fame, he was determined to raise the artistic level of local painting. In 1660 he decided, together with Francisco Herrera el Mozo, to found an academy of painting, of which he was the main driving force. His fame spread so far throughout Spain that Palomino states that around 1670 King Charles II offered him the possibility of moving to Madrid to work there as a court painter. We do not know whether this reference is true, but the fact is that Murillo remained in Seville until the end of his life. Works by Murillo are now housed in the world's most important art galleries, such as the Prado Museum, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna, the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan in New York and the National Gallery in London, among many others.

17th century Spanish school. Andalusian Baroque."Infant Jesus".Polychrome lead.Measurements: 25,5 x 13,5 x 8 cm.Lost since the end of Classical Antiquity, the technique of the moulds by pieces was recovered thanks to the technical advances of the Renaissance related to the casting of metals, with which it was possible to obtain with certain ease, from an original model in wood, clay, plaster or other material, replicas with a high quality finish, although they needed the final touches of the master. The use of bronze and, fundamentally, of lower melting point alloys such as pewter, a mixture of lead with parts of tin and antimony, the lower cost of the material and its working, as well as access to a demand for small-format sculpture of a devotional nature, meant that Seville became, from the end of the 16th century, the main supplier in the Hispanic sphere of this type of images cast in metal, which, with their polychrome finish, competed advantageously with those made of wood. This is attested to by Pacheco in his treatise on the Art of Painting (1649) when he speaks of the surfeit of cast works, particularly Crucifixes and Children in his time, and the existence in Seville of specialised artists such as Diego de Oliver, who in 1619 declared himself a master caster of relief figures and in 1629 specifically of lead children. It is precisely this iconography, that of the triumphant Child Jesus, naked, standing, blessing with his right hand and holding a banner in the other hand, which was in greatest demand due to its devotional nature, especially after the resounding success of the sculpture carved in 1607 by Montañés for the Brotherhood of the Sagrario in Seville.

Peruvian school; ca. 1700."Virgin of Solitude".Oil on canvas. It has an inscription on the back.It has perforations on the canvas. It conserves original frame of epoch in carved and gilded wood.Measurements: 57 x 42 cm; 72 x 57 cm (frame). An open curtain reveals the monumental figure of the Virgin. The majestic image of the Mother of God stands on a pedestal supported by several little golden angels. She is dressed in a rich white robe, alluding to her virginity, with golden brocade and a dark mantle with embroidered stars, symbols of Marian iconography. The Virgin devoutly clasps her hands on her breast and turns her rosy face towards the ground, conscious of her role as a mother. Our Lady of Solitude is a variant invocation of the Virgin Mary of the title of Our Lady of Sorrows. Although the model instituted by Gaspar Becerra in his Virgen de la Soledad of the convent of La Victoria gave rise to a characteristic and "uniquely Spanish" iconography of this invocation that spread throughout the Christian world, it has its roots in the spread throughout Europe, thanks above all to the Servites, of the cult of Our Lady of Sorrows, since the Solitude of Mary is the last of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The Virgen de la Paloma is a Marian devotion specific to the city of Madrid, and her image is in the centre of the altarpiece of the parish church of the Virgen de la Paloma and San Pedro el Real. According to the report written in 1791 by the mayor of Madrid, the Marquis of Casa García Postigo, the canvas, a representation of Our Lady of Solitude, was found or given to some children on a plot of land next to Calle de la Paloma in 1787. The work was then recovered by Isabel Tintero, who cleaned and framed it and placed it in the doorway of her house. Several miracles were soon attributed to the image, and its cult spread rapidly, and in 1795 a chapel was built to house it. The one presented here is a faithful, albeit partial, copy of the original canvas, which shows Mary with a gesture of grief, dressed in mourning and adorned with a silver crown. It is worth noting that during Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religious style of painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebusier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and the political opening up of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.

Circle of DIEGO VELÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1599 - Madrid, 1660), first half of the 17th century."Tears of Saint Peter".Oil on canvas.Size: 106 x 84 cm; 115 x 93 cm (frame).Aesthetically the work shows a great compositional and stylistic influence related to Diego Velázquez, specifically with the painting of the Tears of St. Peter, which belongs to the Villar Mir Collection, Madrid. This model must have been very popular at the time, as there are several similar versions, such as the one by Herrera the Elder, which is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville. Devotional image of the tears of Saint Peter. The representation of Saint Peter acknowledging his guilt and imploring forgiveness for having denied Christ three times was used by the reformers of the Catholic Church to encourage personal repentance, the need for forgiveness and, consequently, the practice of the sacrament of penance. This iconographic theme was very common in the last decades of the 16th century. The saint is shown seated, wrapped in a blue cloak and draped tunic, with his gaze directed out of the frame, imploring forgiveness. The large keys, his principal attribute, symbol of the Kingdom of Heaven, rest on the ground. The mysterious presence of the small landscape in the background, almost as if observed through a window, could allude to the transition between day and night, light and darkness, as the saint embodies in the history of Christianity. The monumental canon of the figure, the naturalism of the depiction of the clothing and the baroque lighting that constructs the scene place the painting in 17th-century Spain.According to the New Testament, Saint Peter was a fisherman, known as one of Jesus' twelve apostles. The Catholic Church identifies him through the apostolic succession as the first Pope, based among other things on Jesus' words to him: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the power of Death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven". St. Peter could be said to have been Jesus' confessor, his closest disciple, the two being united by a very special bond, as recounted in both the canonical and apocryphal Gospels. The story of St. Peter's tears will be used by theologians and moralists of the Counter-Reformation as an element of rapprochement with the faithful, bringing the saint's weaknesses closer to mortal man, showing that even St. Peter can commit faults, and subsequently be forgiven.

CASTRO FIDEL: (1926-2016) Cuban Prime Minister 1959-76, later President 1976- 2008. An extremely rare L.S., `Fidel Castro´, two pages, 4to, beige lined paper, Isle of Pines, Cuba, 6th December 1953, in Spanish. The multiple letter signed by the Moncada prisoners, probably smuggled out of the Isle of Pines, was written from prison and very shortly after Castro wrote his well-remembered manifesto "History Will Absolve Me". The letter, written by prisoner Agustin Cartaya, is addressed to a lady and is a letter of appreciation to all supporters of their cause, stating in part `Together with these sincere lines, attached are the affection and respect from all my partners. We read your poem and it inspired all of us.. In these difficult times.. I will remember your beautiful thoughts and incomparable ideals..´ further saying `You know that our tasks are firm to serve the ideals, our formula of action demands continuity of our efforts, that is why from here we will fight continuously…´ Signed by the 27 imprisoned comrades, including Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, Juan Almeida, Andres Garcia, Mario Chaves, Francisco Gonzalez, Gabriel Gil, Eduardo Rodriguez, Armando Mestre Martinez, Ramiro Valdes, etc.. Overall age wear and foxing stains, few traces of former staples and three small areas of paper loss, only affecting a few words of the letter, but not affecting the signatures. F Castro formed a group called "The Movement" in 1952 which operated along a clandestine cell system, while arming and training anti-Batista recruits. Castro stockpiled weapons for a planned attack on the Moncada Barracks, a military garrison outside Santiago de Cuba. The attack took place on 26th July 1953, but ran into trouble and most of the rebels pinned down by machine gun fire. Castro set out for the rugged Sierra Maestra mountains, where they established a guerrilla base. Responding to the attack, Batista's government proclaimed martial law, ordered violent crackdown on dissent and tortures. Rebels were rounded up, some were executed, and others including Castro transported to a prison. The government put 122 defendants on trial on 21st September 1953. Acting as his own defense counsel, Castro cited Jose Martí as the intellectual author of the attack and convinced the three judges to overrule the army's decision to keep all defendants handcuffed in court, proceeding to argue that the charge with which they were was incorrect, as they had risen up against Batista, who had seized power in an unconstitutional manner. The trial ended on 5th October, with the acquittal of most defendants. Castro was sentenced on 16th October 1953, during which he delivered a speech that would be printed under the title of "History Will Absolve Me". He was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment in the hospital wing of the Model Prison on the Isle of Pines (Today called Isle of Youth). Imprisoned with 25 comrades, Castro renamed his group the "26th of July Movement" (MR-26-7) in memory of the Moncada attack. Castro and his comrades were released a year and a half later, on 15th May 1955.
