Cromwell, the New Model Army and Parliament - pamphlet. `The Humble Remonstrance of the Commission Officers and Private Soldiers of Major General Goffs Regiment (so called) of Foot, Presented to his Excellency the Lord Fleetwood, London: 1659`, title and 6pp, 18 x 13.5cm, somewhat age toned, unboundNote: After Penruddock`s Uprising in 1655, William Goffe was appointed Major-General for Berkshire, Hampshire and Sussex. He was named to Cromwell`s Upper House, and remained a loyal supporter until the Protector`s death. Goffe transferred his loyalty to Richard Cromwell in 1658 and is said to have advised him to use military force to resist Fleetwood and Disbrowe. Charles Fleetwood was Cromwell`s son in law and was supported, after Cromwell`s death and when Richard Cromwell had assumed leadership, by officers eager to restore the republican Commonwealth. In April 1659, Fleetwood successfully challenged Richard`s authority over the army and forced him to dissolve the Third Protectorate Parliament. However, he was forced from office in 1659/1660, at the Restoration, and retired from public life.
