Spanish school of the late nineteenth century."Young woman on the balcony".Oil on panel. With period frame.Measurements: 31 x 24 cm; 52 x 46 cm (frame). The costumbrism theme sinks its roots in the romantic vision that, among other aspects, pays special attention to those traditional, popular or typical customs that reflect what is understood as the genuine way of being and living of the people of the town, of their traditions and values, and it does it, in addition, from a mythical and idealized perspective in which the popular classes, especially those of the rural environment, are always opposed to the model that personifies the growing and growing city in the heat of the industrialization. This model of costumbrismo assumed in Romanticism survives for a long time in the European pictorial culture of the 19th century, since later Realism, although it sometimes introduces a more objective and dispassionate vision and focuses its attention on the hardness of work, continues to disseminate images of peasants and their tasks, rural customs, traditional trades, in short, much of what was feared to disappear in a few decades.

EUCLID (fl. ca 300 B.C.). Euclidis Megarensis Mathematici Clarissimi Elementorum Geometricorum Libri XV"¦ Basel: Johann Herwagen, 1537.  Folio (298 x 202 mm). Woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials, woodcut illustrations. (Title torn crossing letters with old repair verso and lower corner renewed, closed tear on p.181 repaired, title slightly soiled). Contemporary vellum (endpapers renewed, slightly soiled). Provenance: Christen Sorensen Longomontanus (1562-1647), Danish astronomer (signature on title); Alexander Campbell (armorial bookplate). FIRST HERVAGIUS EDITION OF EUCLID IN LATIN, containing the complete works derived from Zanetti's 1505 translation, and including comments by Campanus, Hypiciles, and the rare preface by Philip Melanchthon, removed by censors in many copies.   DANISH ASTRONOMER CHRISTEN SORENSEN LONGOMONTANUS'S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE.   Longomontanus was Tycho Brahe's assistant at the astronomical observatory of Uraniborg in 1589. There, Brahe, Longomontanus and Kepler worked to try to develop a theory to predict longitude at oppositions with complete accuracy. He had good "skill at manipulating observational data, and he may have played an important role in Tycho's remarkable research on the lunar theory" (DSB). He visited Frauenburg, where Copernicus had made his observations, and took a master's degree at Rostock. He was elected in 1605 to a professorship in the University of Copenhagen, where we became chair of mathematics in 1607, a position he held until his death.   Longomontanus developed Tycho's geoheliocentric model of the universe to public acceptance. When Tycho died in 1601, he had not yet completed his program for the restoration of astronomy.   Though the observational aspects were complete, Longomontanus selected and integrated the data into accounts of the motion of the planets and presented the results, which he published in his Astronomia Danica of 1622.   Though Kepler's Rudolphine Tables of 1627, based on Tycho's observations, are often believed to be more accurate than any previous tables, Longomontanus's tables, published in 1622, also based on Tycho's observations, were demonstrably more accurate. With several marginal annotations, presumably in Longomontanus 's hand. Based on the Topps trading card series, the film saw Martian invaders terrorising humanity as they sought to conquer Earth. This puppet was originally obtained from the collection of a crew member. Burton's initial idea was to use stop-motion animation for the Martians' scenes, and several detailed puppets of the aliens were constructed by model makers Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders . However, it quickly became apparent that stop-motion was too complex a technique, causing the movie's budget to escalate. Eventually, Burton was convinced to use CGI animation created by ILM instead. The puppets were ultimately scanned and used as primary references for the final computer-generated animation. This puppet consists of an internal metal armature covered in foam latex skin airbrushed in shades of green and brown. The foam latex has hardened over time, causing minor cracking in places. The puppet has been sympathetically restored and comes presented on a black-painted wooden display base. It is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the crew member. It is finished in sculpting clay and painted with enamels and acrylics. The model is approximately 20 cm (8") taller than the original made with Doug Jones under prosthetics in the film. The craft resembles an insect, with three bulbous sections, four landing legs, and rocket thrusters on the rear. Decals reading "Starbug 1" are applied to the front and rear sections on each side of the ship, and "1" transfers are applied to the top of the ship's central compartment and on its fins. A clear canopy covers the cockpit, and the rear of the body has a square hole where a rod was placed to support the model during filming. The model has only minor wear from production use and age, including scuffing, scratches and a couple of small areas of paint wear, most notably on the rear. Dimensions: 40 cm x 40 cm x 26 cm (15¾" x 15¾" x 10¼") Estimate: £4,000 - 6,000 M

Note other lots in the auction may close on November 10th or November 11th.An original, screen-matched, large-scale Eagle Transporter model miniature from the sci-fi television series Space: 1999. In the year 1999, nuclear waste stored on the Moon exploded, propelling it into deep space and stranding the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha. Eagles were the primary spacecraft on Moonbase Alpha, used for exploration, transportation and combat. This transporter appeared in 45 of Space: 1999's 48 episodes, making it the most screen-used model of the series, and it screen-matches the Eagle seen in series finale "The Dorcons", through its markings and details on the bottom of the footpads. It was also used in nine of the 11 crash-landing sequences, meaning it had to be repeatedly rebuilt and repaired. In recent years it has been lovingly and carefully restored by master model maker David Sisson.Husband-and-wife team Gerry and Sylvia Anderson created the live-action show Space: 1999, having previously collaborated on their "Supermarionation" puppet-based shows, including Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and Joe 90. For Space: 1999, they drew visual inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Special effects designer and Academy Award®-winner Brian Johnson, who had worked on 2001, designed the Eagle Transporters. They were built in four sizes: 44", 22", 11" and 5" in length. Although two other 44" models were eventually built, this is the original 44" model used primarily for medium and close-up photography - such as take-off, landing and crashing shots - and appeared prominently in the show's opening credits. The model is made largely of resin and wood, with a brass frame, moveable metal feet and propulsion engines on its underside. The passenger pod is hand-painted in varying shades of grey, giving the impression of different panels. It has four doors, one on each side, which do not open. Small transfers, featuring serial numbers and the Moonbase Alpha insignia, give added detail and realism. The model's various sections are detachable, including the feet, main frame, pod, and cockpit, which reveals two model pilots when removed. Sisson repaired the brass frame holding the Eagle together, stripping it down and resoldering it. He also stripped down paintwork which had been applied subsequent to production, revealing original detailing, before carefully applying new paintwork in some areas. The model is accompanied by a storage crate and a letter of authenticity from Sisson, explaining the model's remarkable history and extensive use on the production. Dimensions: 112 cm x 45 cm x 20 cm (44" x 17¾" x 7¾") Special shipping required; see special shipping notice in the Buyer's Guide. Estimate: £80,000 - 120,000 MClients without purchase history may need to meet additional registration requirements in order to bid on this lot; please inquire for details.

Rebel fighters flew X-wings - among the most iconic spacecraft in sci-fi cinema - during the climactic destruction of the new Death Star. To save money and time during the productions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, ILM bought in a handful of off-the-shelf model kits, which were heavily adapted and modified for filming. This miniature has been extensively modified to include: a weighted body; a full internal steel motion-control armature, with a motion-control mounting point running through the body; a rear main engine plate (concealing a removable plug); and light-up thrusters. It is finished with beautiful ILM paintwork and intentional distressing. The light-up engine thrusters are built with an aluminium shroud housing each light, and are illuminated by connecting the power leads in the nose of the miniature to a power supply. Interestingly, the top of the wings are designated "Red 4", while the lower wings are designated "Red 5", indicating this could have originally been designed for long shots of Luke's (Mark Hamill) X-wing.This miniature is believed to be the only model miniature X-wing with light-up engines ever to come to auction. Very few miniatures from the Star Wars series come to market and are therefore very rare. This model was acquired from an ILM model maker who worked on both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as all three original Indiana Jones films, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and a number of the Star Trek movies. This miniature was specifically used in Return of the Jedi, as all X-wings in A New Hope were scratch built, rather than built with kits. There were very few X-wings in The Empire Strikes Back, and those which were used had a slightly different paintwork and finish. In addition, the style, tones and colours of the paintwork and construction of this X-wing match other Return of the Jedi versions in the Lucasfilm Archive. The miniature is mounted on a custom-built, mirrored base and presents in excellent condition having undergone some minor sympathetic restoration. Dimensions (displayed): 31 cm x 27 cm x 23 cm (12¼" x 10¾" x 9") Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.
