Autograph letter signed 'Edward Elgar', Malvern, 19 February [1897], to Novello & Co., saying that by this post he is returning the full score and 8vo copy of "St John's Eve", 'I have made a note of the direction in the full-sc:- an asterisk appears to be omitted in the 3rd & 4th Horns... in St George I think I must make the Cornets (or at least one) obbligato - the quasi-military character of the work demands this', with a concluding note and postscript, 3 pages, publisher's acknowledgement mark at head of first page and ink date receipt stamp to final blank, light vertical crease, 8vo Novello had sent Elgar the score of 'St John's Eve' by Frederick Cowen (1852-1934) as a model.
