The 24cm spoked flywheel with split bronze bearings and brass oiler cups. A fine exhibition quality 5 inch gauge model of a London Midland and Scottish 4-6-2 Duchess of Atholl tender locomotive, recently completed by gold medal winning, model engineer John Richardson of Halifax. The locomotive was built using works drawings and is finished in the 1938 LMS livery of crimson lake with black, vermillion and gold lining. Important Notice: Sadly, the tender to this locomotive was scratched while in storage at Dreweatts. However, the builder of the locomotive, has kindly offered to oversee the repair of the tender to faultless new condition by the original professional painter of the locomotive at no extra cost to the buyer, within six weeks of the auction date. A fine exhibition quality 5 inch gauge model of a London North Eastern Railway A4 Pacific Class 4-6-2 live steam tender locomotive ‘Mallard’ No. 4468, The model built by Mr John Richardson of Halifax, circa 1991, from Doncaster works drawings, photographs and dimensions and details taken from Mallard and the other preserved A4’s. Built as in 1938. The silver soldered copper boiler would appear to have never been steamed and the cab is of fine scale detailing which includes steam pressure gauge, sight-glass, regulator, direction control, lever operated firebox doors, driver's seats and simulated wooden plank flooring. The chassis with twin outside cylinders and centre cylinder having Walschaert’s valve gear with fluted motion. The eight wheel tender, of streamlined type, with L.N.E.R to side, fitted hand rails, steps, coupling and vacuum hose.The model finished in traditional garter blue and black livery with name plates and cab-side number, detailed river-work, steps, hand-rails, lamp irons and lamps.The model comes together with display track and wooden stand.Mallard was purchased by Lord Braybrooke directly from the builder Mr John Richardson of Halifax in May 1991. The model won gold at The Model Engineer exhibition Alexandra Palace, London in 1990 and also took The Crebbin Memorial Trophy.Mallard was built at Doncaster in 1938 and later that year established the world speed record for steam traction at 126 miles per hour. The A4 locomotive was designed under the direction of Sir Nigel Gresley of the London and North Eastern Railway from developments of the Pacific class in 1922. Eccentric driven steam valve and water pump mounted to side, balanced crank, brass oiler and mounted on sole plate with wooden plinth and base with moulded edge. The silver soldered copper boiler having fittings including regulator, pressure gauge, water sight-glass, hand operated brake, hand feed pump, quadrant reversing lever, ‘Salters type’ safety valve and ratchet oiler system. The chassis having twin outside cylinders with drain cocks, Walschaert’s valve gear, steam driven water pump mounted with inline displacement oiler.
