Peruvian or Bolivian school of the 19th century."Allegory of Peruvian-Bolivian unionism".Polychrome metal plate on both sides.Silver frame.Measurements: 7 x 5,5 cm (plaque); 11 x 7,6 cm (frame). This is a medallion with a metal plate polychromed on both sides which allegorically represents Peruvian-Bolivian unionism. On the obverse, the artist shows the image of the Virgin of Candelaria crowned with the Child, a strictly symmetrical composition of Baroque heritage that does not lose the naturalism or the contained dynamism that reveals the taste of that period. A break of glory serves as a backdrop for the representation of the Virgin and Child, flanked at the base by the flags of Peru and Bolivia waving majestically above a pompous cloud. The souls of the damned, probably an allusion to the anti-unionists, observe this honourable scene burning in the flames of hell. On the back, the artist painstakingly depicts the coronation of the Virgin of Mercy at the hands of Christ and a bishop wearing a mitre. The dove of the Holy Spirit completes a completely narrative composition, technically derived from the stylistic concepts assimilated in the colonial process. However, it can be seen in this work that, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of the independence and political opening up of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity. The technical virtuosity and meticulousness in the depiction of each figure stands out. As already mentioned, the medallion iconographically alludes to Peruvian-Bolivian unionism (or Peruvian-Bolivian nationalism), an initially political and social and later economic trend that emerged in the 19th century, at the beginning of the independence of South American countries from the Spanish empire. This ideology advocated the union of Peru and Bolivia for historical, economic, social and political reasons of both territories before American independence.
Mexican school; last third of the 18th century."Dolorosa".Oil on copper. It has traces of illegible signature. It has faults in the painting.Measurements: 43,5 x 32 cm.In this devotional work the painter presents Mary as Mater dolorosa, placed on a neutral background that emphasizes the monumentality of the figure. The Virgin is portrayed at this moment after the death of her Son, suffering and feeling deep pain which is symbolically represented in the form of a sword piercing her heart. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin has its roots in medieval times, and was especially widespread among the Servite Order, founded in 1233. There are many and varied iconographic representations whose central theme is the Virgin Mary in her Sorrowful aspect, the first of which depicts her next to the Child Jesus, who sleeps oblivious to the future suffering that awaits him. The devotional image is inscribed in an oval around the perimeter of which the legend ECCE MATER TUA (Here is your mother) can be read.It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebusier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and political openness in some of the colonies, several artists began to depict a new model of painting with its own identity.
Spanish school, follower of DIEGO RODRIGEZ DE SILVA Y VELÁZQUEZ (Seville, 1599 - Madrid,1660); 17th century."The Jester Sebastián de Morra".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.It presents damages in the pictorial surface.Measurements: 40 x 26 cm.This work replicates the well-known portrait of Sebastián de Morra nicknamed "the cousin", which was painted by Velázquez around the year 1645. The original work is currently in the Prado Museum in Madrid. In both pieces we see the representation of the jester of King Philip IV, who at first formed part of the court of the Cardinal Infante Don Fernando of Austria, and after his death moved to the protection of Prince Baltasar Carlos, who bequeathed him several objects in his will. Both portraits have the same composition, with the jester in the centre of the scene, seated against a neutral background that gives the figure all the prominence. Despite the damage that can be seen in this work, and the tonal darkness that does not allow all the details to be made out, it is possible to see the suit with lace at the neck, a symbol of distinction and royal protection that the sitter enjoyed, as this type of garment was forbidden for anyone who did not belong to the aristocracy. The work belongs to a series of portraits painted by Velázquez with the intention of decorating the secondary or transitional rooms of the palace (corridors, staircases, etc.). This set of portraits has generated great interest throughout the history of art, and has therefore been widely debated, with theories such as that these works were painted by Velázquez with the intention of dignifying the sitters and criticising the society of the time.Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) was the leading artist of the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He began painting in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer form characterised by bold brushstrokes. In addition to numerous interpretations of scenes of historical and cultural importance, he painted dozens of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). Velázquez's work became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. In the 20th century, artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon paid homage to Velázquez by reinterpreting some of his most iconic images.
