HACIENDA, THE - Limited-edition Custom-built Bass GuitarA limited-edition bass guitar known as the Hac 51 model, constructed from pieces of the Haçienda nightclub in Manchester, England. The Haçienda became famous during the rave scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during which time it was primarily funded by the band New Order and their label Factory Records. After escalating debts, it lost its licence in June 1997 and was demolished in 2002. When this happened, the club's maple dance floor was mostly scrapped. However, some pieces were salvaged by a band that rehearsed upstairs in the same building, who stored them in a garden shed. In 2010, the publisher of The Haçienda: How Not to Run a Club, written by New Order co-founder and bassist Peter Hook, suggested putting pieces of the floor with special-edition versions of the book. So music archivist Chris Hewitt - who has worked with Hook on and off for the last 40 years - tracked down the salvaged maple dance floor pieces. While he examined and cut pieces for the publishers, it occurred to him that they could also be used to create the neck maple fretboard on guitars. After discussing the idea with Hook, Hewitt commissioned custom guitar builder Brian Eastwood to create 10 bass guitars with maple fretboard from the pieces. The instrument comprises a headstock formed into the shape of the Haçienda dancefloor; a neck with fretboard made from the maple dance floor; and a yellow-and-black striped body, representing the Ben Kelly designed nightclub's iconic chevrons. Metal checker plate pieces the same as the nightclub's staircases decorate the headstock and back of the body. This particular guitar also has a piece of the original granite bar top mounted into the body. Additionally, what are normally f-holes on a hollow body guitar have been changed to "5" and "1" shaped holes, representing FAC 51, the catalogue number issued to the Haçienda by Factory Records. The guitar comes in a protective flight case with a black faux-fur lining, and the neck exhibits markings from its time as part of a dance floor. This lot comes from the personal collection of Chris Hewitt, noted audio archaeologist and author of several books on vintage sound equipment. A letter from him is included. Dimensions (guitar): 120 cm x 40.5 cm x 7 cm (47 1/4" x 16" x 2 3/4")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide. OASIS - Noel Gallagher's 1962 Epiphone Casino GuitarA 1962 Epiphone Casino guitar used and owned by Noel Gallagher during his time in the iconic British band Oasis. Gallagher obtained this Epiphone Casino guitar in 1995 after being advised to do so by The Jam's Paul Weller. The guitar was initially advertised in a local newspaper, and Gallagher went to the seller's house to personally collect it. It was played on various recordings circa 1996-97, including Oasis' third album, Be Here Now and demos of songs for the band's fourth album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. The guitar can also be seen held by guitarist Bonehead in a couple of images taken by acclaimed rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky during the recording sessions of Be Here Now. These images feature in her book Was There Then: Oasis: A Photographic Journey. In 1999, Noel's guitar tech Jason Rhodes was instructed to clear out some of his possessions, including several guitars. The instruments were sold through Rick Zsigmond of the New Kings Road Vintage Guitar Emporium. Rhodes incorrectly referred to this guitar as a "USA '63" in an issue of The Guitar Magazine and also referred to the guitar as "a beautiful specimen". The 1962 Epiphone Casino comprises a vintage sunburst-finish maple body with two black pickups (a component specifically used on the 1962 model), nickel hardware and a mahogany neck decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. Two volume knobs, two tone knobs and a selector switch are located on the body's right side. The serial number 99322 is located on the rear of the headstock. The previous owner added a white-coloured pickguard that was not on the guitar during its time in Noel's possession. It can easily be removed from the instrument. The guitar comes with a black leather protective case lined in light blue velvet, and "Oasis" is stencilled in white on the exterior. There are signs of light wear on the headstock edges and scuffing on the leather. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Rhodes, an original receipt listing several of the guitars from Gallagher's collection, a newspaper article detailing the sale of Gallagher's guitars, a handwritten letter from the original owner addressed to Gallagher, a copy of Guitarist magazine and a copy of Was There Then: Oasis: A Photographic Journey by Jill Furmanovsky and Daniela Soave. Dimensions (guitar): 104 cm x 41 cm x 7 cm (41" x 16 1/4" x 2 3/4")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Additional Provenance:The guitar is mentioned as one of the newest additions to Noel's collection on page 49 of The Guitar Magazine Vol. 6, No. 8. It is incorrectly referred to as a "USA '63". A copy of the magazine is included in the lot. Estimate: £30,000 - 50,000 †ΔThis lot will be auctioned on Friday, November 4th. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) - Discovery Pod Concept ModelA Discovery pod concept model from Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The spaceship Discovery had several EVA pods, and Drs. Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Poole (Gary Lockwood) met in one to prevent HAL from hearing their conversation. This wooden model was constructed during the concept stage of the production and provided a basis for miniature models and the full-size craft used during the shoot. The concept model can be seen in a production still showing the pod in the art department next to Stanley Kubrick on page 383 of The Stanley Kubrick Archives, edited by Alison Castle. Very few items from the production have survived to the present day, as many were destroyed after the production wrapped. This model was a vital part of the visual effects process, which created landmark effects, considered excellent to this day.Painted white, the model has hand-drawn pencil markings indicating the positioning of lights and additional details, some of which are seen in the final iteration created for filming, indicating that this model was a significant tool in the development of the design for the pod. The model has wear from age and use, with sections of the wood exposed at the front, and chips and additional markings all over. It sits on a custom-made mirrored display stand, so its underside can be easily viewed. DEVIL'S BACKBONE, THE (2001) - Full-size Santi (Junio Valverde) Display FigureA full-size display figure of Santi (Junio Valverde) from Guillermo del Toro's gothic horror The Devil's Backbone. Carlos (Fernando Tielve) encountered the ghostly apparition of Santi several times at the orphanage and discovered the tragic events that led to Santi's mysterious disappearance. This figure was created by DDT, the Spanish studio behind the make-up and special effects for the film, founded by Academy Award®-winners David Martí and Montse Ribe. This model is a reproduction of the one created at the behest of del Toro for the 2016 exhibition "Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters" and displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Del Toro owns the original model from the exhibition. The figure is constructed from polyester and polyurethane resins around a metal skeleton, with clay pressed pieces from the original production moulds attached. It is finished in sculpting clay and painted with enamels and acrylics.Santi's pale skin is decorated with detailed cracking, notably on the head. Red-coloured cotton wool-like material - representing the blood always seen floating upwards from his head wound - is inserted into a slot on the head's temple. ALIENS (1986) - "Bug Stomper"/"Smart Ass" Dropship Model MiniatureA "Bug Stomper"/"Smart Ass" dropship model miniature from James Cameron's sci-fi action sequel Aliens. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and an elite team of Colonial Marines used a dropship named "Bug Stomper" to land on the surface of LV-426, but it later crash-landed during an attempted evacuation. Bishop (Lance Henriksen) remotely operated the second dropship - named "Smart Ass" - to rescue himself, Ripley, Newt (Carrie Henn) and Hicks (Michael Biehn). The UD-4L class dropship, commonly known as the "Cheyenne", was designed by Cameron in collaboration with legendary artist Ron Cobb and was loosely based on an Apache attack helicopter, as well as other Vietnam War-era aircraft, in keeping with the film's Vietnam War undertones.Several dropship models were made for the production for different purposes, and to different scales. This dropship features both "01" and "02" decals, one on each side, indicating that it was used as both "Bug Stomper" and "Smart Ass" during filming. The cockpit features the "Smart Ass" decals on both sides, and white text below the windows reads "Corporal Ferro/PFC Spunkmeyer". Inside the cockpit are two miniature pilots dressed in military gear. The model is primarily made of fibreglass over a metal skeleton, with resin and styrene detailing. The front two landing pads are high-quality reproductions. The wings and missile pods are mounted on hinges and can be folded out, and the dropship has been intentionally distressed to appear well-used in battle. Sections of the dropship, including the wings, have undergone restoration. Dr. Heywood Floyd (William Sylvester) travelled to Clavius Base aboard the Orion III spaceplane from Earth. This lot consists of a detailed, custom-made replica model miniature of the Orion III, a display base, and various materials related to its construction, including nine vacuum-forming patterns, 13 mould pieces, and a collection of blueprints and paperwork. The model itself is constructed of vacuum-formed ABS and plexiglass with an aluminium armature plate. It was built using original reference materials to be as accurate as possible, and the build was assisted by 2001 experts Piers Bizony and Simon Atkinson. The piece features a fully-lit cabin interior, navigation and landing lights on the wings, and cockpit lights; the engine lights are present but not currently functional and are not readily accessible for repair. The front lighting systems can be accessed through the model's removable nose section. Initially a commission for the Museum of Science Fiction in Washington D.C., this model also featured in exhibits at the Reagan National Airport and the Maryland Science Centre in Baltimore. The Orion III was also the focus of a special display at Wonderfest 2015 in Louisville, Kentucky. It is believed to be one of the most accurate replicas, if not the most accurate replica, of the original filming model ever created. The included materials from the model's build are enlargements of Simon Atkinson's drawing, a number of vacuum-forming patterns used for the fuselage sections, as well as moulds for items such as the side door, navigational strobes, and the tail spikes. STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999) - Yoda's Jedi RobesYoda's Jedi robes from George Lucas' Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Yoda wore his robes throughout the film, including the scenes where he sat with the Jedi Council, gave advice to Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and attended Qui-Gon Jinn's (Liam Neeson) funeral. Yoda was originally a puppet for The Phantom Menace, before being rendered entirely in CGI for the following two films in the prequel trilogy. Later releases of The Phantom Menace featured a fully CG version of the character. The puppet Yoda also appeared in his robes on page 9 of Star Wars Episode 1: The Visual Dictionary, and in the behind-the-scenes documentary which accompanied the DVD release. This costume was saved after production when the original puppet was discarded. It is a significant piece, as costumes from the prequel trilogy are extremely rare and hard to find. The costume was designed to be in keeping with the clothes Yoda wore in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which themselves were an extension of the older Obi-Wan Kenobi's (Alec Guinness) desert robes. The style of costume later became synonymous with the Jedi Order as a whole. The costume consists of a beige woollen hooded robe and a brown woollen tunic. Both feature remnants of green rubber in places, and there are small patches of aged brown foam stuck to the robe. Both garments feature labels from JAK Productions Ltd, on which "Yoda" is handwritten. The costume is displayed on a custom-made poseable Yoda-shaped display featuring a model of Yoda's head, which is a cast of the final approved design sculpt for the film. The original design sculpt was undertaken by Gary Pollard and approved in person by George Lucas. Dimensions (display): 25 cm x 45 cm x 89 cm (9 3/4" x 13 1/2" x 35") Estimate: £40,000 - 60,000 ΩThis lot will be auctioned on Thursday, November 3rd.
