An early 19th century strawwork model ark, with removable upper section and twenty small painted wood animals 36 x 55cm (14 x 21in) Other Notes: Strawwork has often been attributed to Napoleonic prisoners of war in Great Britain in the early 19th century. The first prison to house French prisoners was built in 1796, at Norman Cross, five miles north of Peterborough. Conditions were harsh - disease killed more than 1,700 inmates between 1797 and 1814. To supplement their rations and to provide a small income, some prisoners made ornaments, models and toys which they were allowed to sell. They used straw, wood, bone and even human hair. Some designs were complex and intricate, requiring great skill and patience to create and were very desirable to collect even at that time.
