On December 9th 1886 The 400 Ton Barque Mexico Was On Its Way From Liverpool To South America Carrying A Mixed Cargo, The Ship Ran Into Trouble That Evening, Dragged Her Anchors And Drove Onto The Beach At Ainsdale, The Lifeboat ``ELIZA FERNLEY`` Was Launched At 11pm With 16 Crew Including Coxswain Charles Hodge, It Was Hauled Three And A Half Miles Along The Coast During The Raging Gale In Near Complete Darkness, The Lifeboat Was Within About 20 Yards Of The Wreck And About To Cast The Stricken Ship A Line When A Massive Wave Capsized Her, Trapping Many Of Her Crew Underneath, Thirteen Of The Crew Died That Night, The ``Mexicos Distress Signals Had Been Picked Up From The Formby Sands, Not Only By Southport But Also Lytham And St Annes Stations, A Second Lifeboat, The ``LAURA JANET`` From St Annes And Its Crew Were All Lost In The Rescue Attempt, The Lytham Lifeboat The ``Charles Biggs`` Reached The Mexico And Rescued Her 12 Crew, In All 28 Lifeboat Mens Lives Were Lost
