1st century BC. A helmet of Pseudo-Illyrian form, the bowl made of two pieces of bronze, decorated from front to back by two hemispherical ribs, forming a double edge which runs from back to the front of the helmet, the two halves of the crown overlapping along the dividing seam, with three bronze rivets still visible; cheek-pieces either side. Cf. Chernenko, E. V. Skifskii dospekh (Scythian armour), Kiev, Naukova dumka (in Russian), 1968; Dedjulkin, A. V. 'Locally Made Protective Equipment of the Population of North-Western Caucasus in the Hellenistic Period', in Stratum Plus, n.3, 2014, pp.169-184; ????????? ?. ?., '????? ??????????? ??????? ?? ????????? ??????' (Sarmatian Age Helmets from Eastern Europe), in Stratum Plus, n.4, 2014, pp.249-284; ????????? ?. ?., '????? «????????» ????', (Novichikhin, A.M., 'A new Meotian helmet) in Parabellum Novum, Military History Journal, n.3 (36), ?????-?????????, 2015. This helmet is very similar to various samples found in the Scythian graves, although his origin is Mediterranean. Symonenko in 2014 individuated at least nine specimens of such category, partially fragmented or half broken, which he categorised variant I of the Illyrian helmet. He mentioned also the presence of three further helmets of this category in private collections, and one more in USA, plus a specimen in the Safari Park of Gelendzhik. All helmets of this type were found in the North-Western Caucasus (in Adygea"). The name of the typology came from the constant presence, on helmets of such category (especially characteristic of the so-called insular Illyrian helmets), of the double edge decorating the crown front to back. The chronological gap in the production of the original prototypes (from VII century BC on) and of these other specimens makes difficult to see the influence of the Illyrian helmets on the genesis of the pseudo-Illyrians (III-I century BC"). However one find in the necropolis of Nymphae (Chernenko, 1968, 92-93, fig.51) dated at the V-IV century BC seems to give the possibility that since this age the Illyrian helmets - always through the mediation of the Greeks - could have been diffused among the population of the North-Western Caucasus. 667 grams, 23.5cm (9 1/4"). From a London W1, UK, collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato. The common feature of this helmet category is, besides the form and manufacturing technique, the circumstance that the two halves of the bowl are riveted with an overlap along the 'sagittal seam'. The bowl is usually hemispherical, compressed on the sides. The bottom edge is wrapped out and embossed, forming a low roller. Somewhat higher, the roller is raised higher over the rim of the bowl, turning up on the front and forming the quoted double edge, along the 'sagittal seam'. Constructive details and ornamentation of the crown are however different and allow us to individuate several variants of such helmets. This helmet belongs to the variant I, whose specimens have been found in Kurganinsk, in the necropolis of Sereginskii (grave 138) and Chetuk, in the Sanctuary near Psenaf (Symonenko, 2014, fig.14, nn.1-4"). Other helmets of this variant are visible in the Karakovsky collection, while, according to V.R. Ehrlich, another specimen from Mesmay is stored in the depots of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow. The specimens of Chetuk and Sereginskii are decorated with stylised diadems, with volutes at the ends, like those of the Chalcidian-attic helmets; one of the Chetuk helmets shows also several vertical ribs, on the frontal and parietal parts of the crown. These motifs, typical of the contemporary pseudo-attic helmets are clearly perceived in this decoration, probably because they were familiar to the craftsmen who made the pseudo-Ilyrian ones. The cheek-guards of this specimen, which according to the author of the present report, are not pertinent and are from a different model. Fair condition, restored.

6th century AD. A gold finger ring comprising a broad hoop with three beaded fillets to the outer face, arcaded architectural model to the bezel with granule detailing, pyramidal roof, square cell with inset garnet cloison. Cf. Hadjadj, R. Bagues Merovingiennes - Gaul du Nord, Paris, 2007, item 393 (Grez-Doiceau"). 7.56 grams, 35mm overall, 20.42mm internal diameter (approximate size British V, USA 10 1/2, Europe 23.99, Japan 23) (1 1/2"). Property of a London collector, acquired early 1990s. Fine condition. A large wearable size.

Los 197

6th century AD. A marble sarcophagus-shaped casket from the period of Justinian the Great, rectangular in plan with pitched-roof lid; the contoured body with rosette within a wreath to each short side, expanding-arm cross within a wreath to one long side and to the other long side a D-shaped trough with arcaded outer face flanked by opposed peacocks and with a scallop above forming a spout; the plain interior with corresponding outlet hole; the lid with scrolled up stand to each corner, expanding-arm cross to each short side, similar motif in a wreath to one long side and to the other the image of the Divine Lamb (Agnus Dei) within a wreath; apex of the roof flat with central hole to accept strongly scented offerings of oils which was the method of interaction with the precious relic; the holes inside the wreaths were originally inserted with precious stones. [A video of this item is available to view on TimeLine Auctions website.] See Grabar, A. L'età d'oro di Giustiniano, Milano, 1966; Hahn C. (ed.), Objects of devotion and desire, medieval relic to contemporary art, Januar 27-April 30, 2011, catalogue of the exhibition at the he Bertha and Karl Lebsdorf Art Gallery, Hunter College, New York, 2011; Various, Byzanz Pracht und Alltag, Kunst und Austellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn 26.Februar bis 13.Juni 2010, Mainz; and cf. The Metropolitan Museum, accession number 1978.273a,b and 49.69.2a,b for similar shaped caskets with offering apertures to the top. Such object of devotions began to be common from 4th century AD, when the Roman Empire slowly underwent its transformation in a Christian Empire, beginning with the Edict of tolerance towards all the Religions (included the Christian one) of Constantine and Licinius in 313 AD and ending with the proclamation of the Christianity as official religion of the Roman State, with Theodosius, in 380 AD. Since then the Roman Empire was a Christian one, with its Eastern Capital, Constantinople (the city of Constantine) or Nea Romi (New Rome) born as Christian city, and remaining such until its fall to the Turks in 1453 AD, except for the short period of Julian II (361-363 AD"). Many simpler similar reliquaries are preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, generically dated to a large period between 400-600 AD. A similar reliquary, although less decorated, is preserved at the Israel Museum. Our reliquary can be dated with a major precision. It shows decorations and characters typical of the Age of Justinian the Great (527-565 AD"). The exquisite facture of the work points to Asiatic workshops of the Empire, in particular Ephesus or the same Chief City, Byzantium. The style of the crosses is the same of the cross held by the victorious Christ in the so-called Barberini ivory, today preserved at the Louvre Museum (Grabar, 1966, p.279, fig.319), with all probability realised at Constantinople in the first half of 6th century AD. The holes in the wreaths were inserted with precious stones, like those of the wreath the Diptych of Saint Lupicin in Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, also an artwork realised in Constantinople in 6th century. Two similar reliquaries, today in the Römisch-Germanisches Museum of Köln (Byzanz, 2010, pp.230-231), dated at the 6th century, were instead realized in Syria, one of the most rich provinces of the Empire before of its lost to the Arabs after the battle of Yarmouk in 636 AD. 16.3 kg, 30cm (12"). Property of a central London gentleman; previously with a London, Mayfair, gallery in the early 1990s, accompanied by an academic report by specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato and a geologic report No. TL005222, by geologic consultant Dr R. L. Bonewitz. This casket is in excellent condition and the refinement of execution is very rare. In many churches, the sacred relics were the focus of the liturgical rites and cultic processions. The relics were bones, bits of clothing, or fragments of objects that had belonged to a saint or holy person, which were kept in special boxes called reliquaries. In Khirbet Beth Sila, north of Jerusalem, a small reliquary was found containing a long strand of hair. The gabled stone sarcophagi used for Christian burial were the model for miniature copies, like the one seen here, that were manufactured throughout the Roman Empire as containers for relics or objects made holy by physical contact with them. Beginning in the fourth century, the bodies of martyrs and saints were exhumed, divided, and moved to local churches, where they were placed in reliquaries that were enclosed within altars or buried under them or displayed in chapels dedicated to the Saint. The reliquaries were placed beneath the main altar, within a depression in the floor, and sometimes also kept in the rooms alongside the apse or in the side apses, called for this reason martyria. The reliquaries served to the Pilgrims and devotes for the collecting of the holy Oil, the Myron. They were sealed, probably with lead, and the only way to interact with the precious relic kept inside was the opening at the top of the reliquary, where strongly scented offerings of oil could be poured inside the small sarcophagus. Once the oil had been poured through the upper aperture it passed over the enclosed relic and would have been collected in pilgrim flasks from the source on the side, thus creating holy oil. This is the reason why some of the reliquaries, like our specimen, have an additional hole in one of the sides, to make it easier to remove the sanctified oil. These holes were sometimes, like here, equipped with spouts, usually made of metal. The devoted honoured the reliquary with the most precious oil in the hope they would be rewarded with protection and healing. Alternatively, the holes in the lid of such sarcophagi-shaped reliquary, as seen in our specimen, allowed the faithful to insert cloth attached to narrow rods into the reliquary in order to absorb the power of the relic through contact. Very fine condition, minor wear. Extremely rare.

Los 473

Late 13th-mid 14th century AD. An Oakeshott type XVII iron sword probably of German manufacture, the pommel is octagonal-shaped and facetted, mounted on a straight guard which in section shows squared quillons; the long cut and thrust tapering two-edged blade is strongly marked, and of flattened diamond shape in cross-section with a short fuller; the blade with inlaid latten decorations of running predators, possibly a panther and a wolf. Cf. J Oakeshott, R.E., The Archaeology of the weapons, London, 1960; Gilliot, C., Armes & Armures V-XV, Bayeux, 2008; Michalak, A., 'Swords and falchions from the Polish-Silesian-Brandenburg Borderland' in Marek, L. (ed.), Weapons bring peace? Warfare in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, Wroclaw, 2013; this example with good parallels in various similar specimens, ranging from the second half of 14th century to 1500 AD; two samples can be found in the Hermann Historica's catalogue of 2008 (Gilliot,2008, p.132), one coming from the battlefield of Castillon (1453 AD) and the other a German work of about 1500; also good parallels can be seen with the sword now in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, found in the river Cam.; in the Royal Armoury we have the most outstanding sample similar to this sword, found in the River Thames near London Bridge, dated circa 1430 AD, in this model the tall pommel is of octagonal section, the tang long and, like in our sword, with straight quillons of square section, although the grip is missing; the section of such swords was usually hexagonal and very solid with sometimes, like in this case, a very shallow fuller in upper half; swords of such type had more or less the same blade-form, although the hilts and especially the pommels varied considerably, allowing Oakeshott to produce a differentiation of type XVII by analysing the pommel types and the cross-guard styles; the pommel presented by this specimen is of T2 type, already visible in the funerary monument of Gunther von Schwarzburg, preserved in Liebfrauenkirche at Arnstadt and dated 1368 AD (Oakeshott, 1960, pp. 314-315, figs.152-153), T2, rhomboid in section, was a second stage of the development of the pommels of such swords, and its German origin can be confirmed also by other monuments, like those of Frederiks von Tarant and Freiderich von Griffenstein (1386 AD"). 1.29 kg, 118cm (46 1/2"). Property of a Suffolk collector; formerly acquired on the European art market in the 1990s; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato. The blade and handle are well preserved as well as the blade decoration. Most probably the specimen is coming from a battlefield or a river find. The piece is in excellent condition and as departure basis price can be fixed an amount of about 9000 pounds. Type XVII blades are dated roughly into the second half of the 14th and to the 15th century, in the time when plate armour mostly reached its high quality. In this period, a type of sword had been devised to have some sort of capacity to deal with, at least to dent and hopefully to bore holes in a complete plate armour. Oakeshott classified this as Type XVII, always with a long hand-and-a-half grip, and a very stout blade of hexagonal section, occasionally with a shallow fuller, and often very heavy and always very rigid and stiff. The most evidence is that such swords were used with two hands, between knights or infantrymen and knights. In a recent article Michalak has evidenced the iconography of type XVII in the region of Polish-Silesian-Brandenburg borderlands, showing as the sword is often represented on the sides of infantry (Michalak,2013, p.148"). Longswords with a wider point were not perfect for thrusting, especially if the opponent wears any piece of armour, even a padded arming jacket would probably provide suitable protection against a thrust from these blade types. Improvement in armour design made it necessary to develop swords that could pierce through armour, for example through rings of mail hauberks or through gaps in plate armour. Improvement in blade metallurgy made possible to develop blades with acute but strong points. Swords of this typology were better designed for cutting and at the same time improve the efficiency of the blades against the simplest metal armour such as a chain mail hauberk. The long swords became in such a way a terrible weapon, used with terrible efficacy with two hands by an armoured knight fighting against infantry, or by professional mercenaries against noble knights. Fine condition.

Olivia Baynham Still life with bread, tomatoes and candelabra Oil on board Signed lower right 30.5 x 40.5cm (12 x 15¾ in.) Similar works by this artist retail at: £500 Olivia Baynham: Olivia is a portrait and figurative artist. Olivia was born in London in 1994, and brought up in Hampshire. After leaving school at 18, she studied an art foundation at City and Guilds in London. Once she had graduated, she decided she wanted to develop her draftsmanship skills further and attempt a more rigorous training method in Florence, Italy. Olivia studied traditional portraiture in Florence for four years at Charles Cecil Studios. Here, she learnt the old masters technique called the 'sight-size method' whereby you measure and observe the model from a distance and to the scale of life, painting under natural light. Masters, such as John Singer Sargent and Sir Thomas Lawrence, used this technique whilst its origins lie in the practise of Van Dyke, Velasquez and Titian. She is now living in London and has a studio in Barons Court. Olivia is accepting portrait, nude and still life commissions.

Mark Coreth , British b. 1958, Jaguar Fishing, 2018 Bronze, from an edition of 20 13cm high x 16.5cm wide x 7cm deep Similar works by this artist retail at: £3,250 Mark Coreth: Mark Coreth was born in London in 1958 and was immediately dispatched to the family farm in the Kenyan highlands where the Equator ran through the house. The idyllic childhood surrounded by exotic Flora and Fauna fostered Mark's early and continuing passion for wildlife and the sculpting of it. Mark has had no formal art school training, his ability is based quite simply on dedication and hard work coupled with an acute and perceptive eye, drawing heavily on experiences gained during his early years in Kenya, and regular sculptural safari's around the world , with his Backpack Studio . His sculptures reflect his instinctive understanding of the behaviour and physicality of the animals he sculpts. Working with extraordinary speed, if the original plasticine or clay fails to speak to him within a couple of hours Mark destroys it and starts again. He captures violence, speed, and movement , or even tranquility and pathos with deceptive ease, and is now internationally recognized as the master sculptor of the animal in motion. As well as his regular one-man exhibitions at Sladmore Contemporary Mark shows regularly in Paris, and New York. His many monumental commissions include a life-size piece of two Cheetahs in a tree for the ruling family in Dubai, a life-size figure of a boatman which sits outside Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a shoal of rays in the Docklands and a massive 50 piece fountain at the Natural History Museum. His most spectacular commission to date has been an enormous 16 foot high life-size charging elephant; the subject of a half hour documentary on the Discovery Channel. Where the film-makers followed him on safari while he made his initial studies, back to his studio for the creation process and finally to the foundry to see the final casting of the bronze. The finished bronze elephants currently reside in a public collection in Rome and a private collection in Australia. 2015 saw him complete his life size bronze of the much loved Race Horse Frankel, commissioned by the owner Prince Khalid Abdullah. Her Majesty the Queen unveiled the first one at Royal Ascot in June, with further copies at York Race Course and the Newmarket Racing Museum to follow. Mark lives and works in deepest Dorset, where the original white plaster model of his life size charging elephant stands guard outside his studio. His latest exhibition, “ The Story in the Snow… Russia’s endangered Big Cats” opens at The Sladmore Gallery in November this year.
