A sculpted white marble Grand Tour model of the Crouching Venus, after the Antique and Renaissance versions, 19th century,: her head declined to dexter, her hair tied up in a chignon; on a rectangular base; 76cm high, 44cm wide*Provenance The property of the late Wing Commander Terence Helfer D.F.C, of Torquay and previously Wigmore Abbey, Herefordshire*Notes The Crouching Venus -originally a Hellenistic work, was hugely popular in the Roman period, and various versions are extant -one in the Royal Collection (currently loaned to the British Museum); another held at the Uffizi, previously at the Villa Medici; another, late of the Farnese Collection and now at the Museo Nazionale in Naples; another in the Louvre, late of the Borghese collection; and several others. The widespread profusion of the model, (as well as its blatant sensuality) is probably responsible for the fervent renewal of interest that developed during the later Renaissance, with such masters as Giambologna, Susini and Coysevox all creating their own variants. The era of the Grand Tour, which famously fed on the greatest works of antiquity, therefore saw numbers of accomplished copies sold to wealthy Milords, who shipped them home to exhibit prominently, emphasising their erudition and their up-to-the minute taste, the model offered here being one such example.
