The paint surface appears quite flat, the face and decolletage area look reasonably good but some of the background, in particular the sleeves, appears quite crudely painted. GUY TAPLIN (BRITISH B. 1939), RUDDY SHELDUCK, A CARVED AND STAINED WOOD MODEL OF A SHELDUCK 1990S Naturalistically modelled as a large decoy-duck, with inset eyes Signed and inscribed to the underside 28cm high, 52cm long Provenance: Purchased from the artist by the vendor's husband The ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), known in India as the Brahminy duck, is a member of the family Anatidae. This distinctive waterfowl is not usually found in Britain It is a migratory bird, wintering in the Indian subcontinent and breeding in southeastern Europe and central Asia, though there are small resident populations in North Africa. It has a loud honking call.Guy Taplin was born in the east end of London in 1939. After leaving school he was employed as a bird keeper to oversee the protection and preservation of waterfowl in Regents Park. The early experience gained inspired Guy to what would become a lifelong love for nature and birds. Later moving to the Essex coast where he could observe shorebirds in their beautiful natural surroundings. Using raw materials from the coastline such as weathered timber, driftwood and seashells he created hand carved bird sculptures These sculptures are understandably sought after by fine art collectors. His works have been exhibited around the world and are held in public collections including the Tate Gallery, National Gallery of Modern Art Edinburgh, Arts Council of Great Britain, Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hambourg and Washington State University.
