3 record car item/sets. A Spark 1:18 scale 1965 Peugeot 404 Diesel Record Car. Painted in French racing blue with ‘404 Diesel’ emblazoned to the sides, with a single seat streamlined cockpit. This was a special made to specifically brake the diesel record at the Montlhery Autodrome near Paris. Powered by a 2163cc engine the car completed 5,000 KM (3,106 miles) run at an average of 99 mph. The model is boxed, with packing and in Mint condition. Also a Hotwheels Legends Vintage Record Holders 4-vehicle set, with a display case. A Revell Metal series 1:18 scale 1937 Auto Union Typ C ‘Stromlinie’ (World Record Car). A streamlined special in bright silver livery, with covered wheel arches for a smooth aerodynamic shape. This evocative shape of the Typ C must have caused a sensation in 1937. Afterward, and especially in the post war period, the curves of this car found their way onto production cars. That’s because this Auto Union was specially shaped for top speed on the Avus circuit near Berlin. At the time, it was the fastest track in the world. Together with a resin model by Bizare of the 1939 Railton, as driven by John Cobb to a top speed of 593.479kmh. In a satin silver finish, with tiger and crossed American and British flags to front. A fine white metal model of the 1919 Sunbeam V12 350hp by Milestone Miniatures. In green and silver livery with ‘Sunbeam’ to engine cover, twin exhausts and black spoked wheels. VGC-Mint. See Plate 5 The 350HP was first raced at Brooklands in 1920 by Harry Hawker. In October Rene Thomas set a new record at the Gaillon hill climb. In May 1922 Kenelm Lee Guinness set three records with it: the Brooklands lap record at 123.30 mph (198.43 km/h), then the land speed record over a mile at 129.17 mph (207.88 km/h) and over a kilometre at 133.75 mph (215.25 km/h) – this was the last land speed record to be set on the Brooklands track.

See Plate 5 The FIAT Mephistopheles (sometimes known simply as Mephistopheles) is a one-off racing car created by Ernest Eldridgeby combining a Fiat racing car and aeroplane engine in 1923. The name is from the demon of the same name. Eldridge broke the World Land Speed Record in 1924 with the Mephistopheles, by driving at 234.98 km/h (146.0 mph) in Arpajon, France. The Mephistopheles was created by combining the chassis of the 1908 Fiat SB4 with a 6-cylinder, 21.7 litre (21706 cc) Fiat A.12 aeroplane engine producing 320 PS (235 kW; 316 bhp.

See Plate 5 Note: This is the car that holds the outer circuit record at Brooklands in Surrey, driven by John Cobb. His record stands at 143.44 MPH. Between 1933 and 1937 the Napier-Railton broke 47 World speed records at Brooklands, Montlhéry and Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

A fine white metal model of the 1932 Birkin ‘BlowerÂ’ Bentley, by Milestone Miniatures. In deep maroon livery with black spoked wheels, RN46. VGC-Mint. See Plate 5 Note: This single seat racing machine is powered by a 4.5 litre supercharged ‘BlowerÂ’ engine. In 1932, Tim Birkin set a record in the car of 137.96mph at the outer circuit at Brooklands. He described the experience as hair-raising “there are bumps which jolt the driver up and down in his seat and makes the car leave the road and and travel through the air”. Some eight decades later that car has recently been Auctioned for £4.5 million.

See Plate 5 Note: The first Chitty was a chain driven customised Mercedes chassis with a 23 litre, 6-cylinder Maybach engine. It was the first amateur machine to achieve celebrity at the Brooklands racetrack in 1921. Chitty 1 won two races in her debut appearance, reaching speeds of 100.75 miles an hour in the Brooklands Short Handicap.
