STEINWAY pianola-piano, first quarter of the 20th century.Measurements: 134 x 159 x 77,5 cm.Early 20th century pianola-piano with Aeolian's Metrostyle Themodist Temponamic playing system, in use between approximately 1913 and 1923. Aeolian Company mechanisms were mainly installed in pianos manufactured by the Aeolian Company, such as the Weber, Steck, Wheelock and Stroud. They were also available on Steinway pianos through an exclusive agreement. Aeolian had been under pressure to manufacture the mechanism for Steinway pianos, but Aeolian had no interest in establishing a relationship with a company it saw as direct competition. So, to satisfy Steinway, Aeolian agreed to stop promoting its Weber brand as a luxury piano firm, and also to stop sponsoring concerts by Paderewski and other great pianists of the day. The agreement also stipulated that Aeolian was to purchase a certain number of Steinway pianos per year, regardless of market demand. The mechanical piano was invented in Paris by Debain around 1850. His system consisted of adding to an upright piano a second set of hammers set in motion by a system of levers. Other pianos were later built on similar principles. The model known simply as the handle piano became very widespread in Italy and England, and from the end of the 19th century a large number of different systems were produced, which competed for the clientele of non-musician amateurs, cafés, etc. Later, the pianola, patented in 1898, would work with a compressed air mechanism.Founded in 1853 in New York by the German immigrant Heinrich E. Steinweg, who by then had already made almost five hundred pianos, Steinway & Sons was one of the main firms responsible for the development of the modern piano, especially during the forty years following its founding, when the company developed almost half of the one hundred and twenty-five patents it holds. Steinway's revolutionary designs, as well as the exceptional quality of its workmanship, earned the firm important international recognition from the very beginning. From 1855 onwards, it won gold medals at many exhibitions in the United States and Europe, most notably the Grand Gold Medal of Honour at the Paris Exposition of 1867. Steinway & Sons was the first American company to receive such a medal, and soon became the favourite of many members of the European aristocracy and the world's greatest pianists. To avoid import costs, Steinway opened its first European factory in 1880, in the German city of Hamburg. Ten years later, the company obtained its first royal warrant, from Queen Victoria of England. In the following years, Stewinway's client list would include the Prince of Wales and other members of European royalty and nobility. Soon it would also become a supplier to many other European royal houses, including Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain and Sweden, and even, in the East, to the Persian royal house.

Carpet, Calos IV. design; Royal Tapestry Factory, mid-20th century.Wool.Slight wear.Signed R.F.T.Measurements: 400 cm x 400 cm.The Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara was founded in Madrid in 1721 by Philip V, in imitation of the French royal workshops that followed the model of Colbert, to provide the pieces for the royal dependencies. Although initially the Royal Factory's production was centred on tapestries, the production of carpets soon became its means of survival, and therefore the basis of its production. It seems that it was in 1786 that the first of the Stuycks, the family who would exercise the artistic direction of the factory until the beginning of the 21st century, asked the king for permission for a nephew to weave "Turkish" carpets (knotted, not woven like a tapestry). These first carpets were in the Charles IV style, a language very much indebted to French classicism, with Hispanic touches and sometimes certain influences of the Empire style.

Female figure with dog in the style of KARL HAGENAUER (1898-1956), 20th century.Patinated wood.Measurements: 42 x 34 x 12 cm.The modelling of this sculpture is essential and synthetic without leaving aside the naturalism, typically Art Deco. Thus, in general, the details are left to one side, the meticulous rendering of the real model, although the author, a follower of Karl Hagenauer's style, pays special attention to capturing the movement of the animal's anatomy. These characteristics ascribe the piece to Art Deco, an artistic style that emerged in 1920 and whose influence continued until the mid-20th century in some countries. It sought to renew all disciplines, championing the value of the technological progress of the time and the new sciences of the day. The son of the goldsmith Carl Hagenauer, Karl studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and imbued with the spirit of the Wiener Wekstätte. After obtaining his diploma in architecture, he did military service between 1917 and 1919, and on his return he began to work as an architect and in his father's studio. During these years he created numerous pieces in silver, brass, copper, enamel, ivory, stone and wood. In 1928, after his father's death, he took over the management of the workshop and was responsible for the expansion of the firm, extending production to cabinetmaking and opening shops in Vienna and Salzburg. Since then he has exhibited his best pieces both in Austria and abroad, was twice awarded the gold medal at the Milan Triennale and was made a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Werkstätte. His works are now in collections all over the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the MoMA and the Jewish Museum in New York, the Casa Lis in Salamanca and many others.

His career came to an abrupt end with his disastrous Custom House which had to be pulled down in 1825 due to subsidence caused by the decay of the beech-piling in the foundations.Plaw had introduced a new style of architectural book with his Rural Architecture... of 1794, with aquatint designs set in a picturesque landscape. "Plaw set the model for villa and cottage pattern books that became a feature of architectural publishing in England for the next fifty years." (Millard British 57).

A Victorian silver electrotype of 'The Homer Cup'Elkington & Co, Birmingham 1845 Cylindrical with a wide flared rim, the interior plain polished, the exterior intricately embossed in high and low relief with naturalistic grape and vine decoration, all juxtaposed against a matted ground, a high fluted ring handle to one side, all on a circular heavy spreading foot, height 11.5cm, diameter widest point 13cm, weight 17oz.Footnotes:The same version can be found in the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, entitled 'The Homer Cup' (CMOA Collection). The designer of this classically inspired piece is the Danish architect Benjamin Schlick (Danish, 1796-1872), made by Elkington & Co, Birmingham 1845. Elkington were among the earliest manufacturers to pioneer 'electrotyping' (which differs from silver-plate) – and this is one of Elkington's earliest electrotypes. To create an electrotype, a wax mould is made of an original model, then covered with metallic powder to make it electrically conductive. It then attracts the silver, forming a heavy electroplate – when the mould is removed the silver is cast into the shape of the mould, creating a perfectly formed object. So it is solid silver, hence the hallmarks, but formed by a process using electro conductivity, which is seen by the stamp on the bottom. Elkington used this process to create exact copies of famous historic objects in silver. This is one of the earliest prototypes, or proof of concept, as a similar design was entered into the Victoria and Albert Museum records on July 30th 1844, 'The Apotheosis Cup of Homer', Birmingham 1844. As such, the lot on offer is a very early version but in a differing classical style. A similar cup can also be seen in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
