The medal was instituted on 3 August 1864 but this type & class of medal was awarded during the regime of General Franco (1938-1975), either to the Nationalist forces of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) or to the Spanish Blue Legion that served with the Axis forces on the Russian front in WW2., more likely the latter.

FREUD LUCIAN: (1922-2011) British painter. A rare A.L.S., Lucian Freud, to the verso of a colour picture postcard of his oil painting entitled Blond girl on a bed (1987), n.p. (London), n.d. (10th December 1990), to Sarah Griffiths. The artist writes, in full, ´I liked your letter and will try and answer some of your question - they don´t all apply. I´ve just finished a huge picture of a naked man. Meanwhile do keep warm. Here´s a Christmas present´. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Freud. Some very light age wear, otherwise VGFreud most likely refers to one of his paintings of the Australian performance artist Leigh Bowery (1961-1994) who became a signifcant model and muse for the painter.

BARYE ANTOINE-LOUIS: (1795-1875) French Sculptor of the Romantic period, most famous for his work as an Animalier, a sculptor of animals. Widely considered together with Rodin and Carpeaux as the three great French sculptors of the XIXth century. Although fame did not come until late in life, examples of his larger work include various lions and tigers in the gardens of the Tuileries and the Lion Assis ("Setaed Lion") exhibited at the Louvre museum in Paris. A rare autograph letter with excellent content, A.L.S., `Barye´, one page, 4to, Paris, 20th May 1858, to Mr. Séchan, in French. Barye in a clean writing accepts an order request that he received four months earlier for a sculpture which he values and describes in full detail, stating `J´accepte la commande que vous me faites à la date du 29 Janvier 1858, consistant en une: pendule se portant sur une cheminée, cette pendule représentera Apollon sur un char attelé de quatre chevaux, modèle de cette pendule et son épreuve unique; Mme Pérère restant propriétaire. Compris marbre et dorure, moins le mouvement. Prix convenu à forfait - 14000 Fr. Plus: Candélabres se plaçant de chaque côté de la pendule, pour le modèle et les deux épreuves uniques, Mme Pérère restant également propriétaire du modèle, compris marbre et dorure. Prix convenu à forfait - 6000 Fr. Il est Bien entendu qu´il ne restera des modèles que les fragments des plâtres plus ou moins endommagés qui auront servi à la fonte des épreuves uniques.´ (Translation: "I accept the order that you made to me on January 29th, 1858, consisting of a: clock which will represent Apollo on a chariot drawn by four horses, model of this clock and its unique proof; Mrs. Pérère remaining the owner. Including marble and gilding, less the machinery. Agreed fixed price - 14,000 Fr. Plus: Candelabra to be placed on each side of the clock, for the model and the two unique proofs, Mrs. Pérère also remaining the owner of the model, including marble and gilding. With address leaf, postmarked and stamped. Very small minor creasing, otherwise VGThe sculpture detailed and valued by Barye in the present letter is a bronze with a height of 80cm, it is considered one of the summits of the artist's work.The critic Paul Manz described the present work this way `Apollon, conduisant son char, se présente de face; des deux côtés s´avancent les Heures, figures légères qui tiennent la bride des cheveaux. Les types sont empruntés à ce que l´antiquité nous a laissé de plus pur et de plus charmant; les cheveaux d´Apollon sont admirables dans leur allure savamment rythmée... Nous ne connaissons, parmi les productions de l´art industriel moderne, aucun oeuvre qui puisse lui être comparée, et Versailles, au temps de ses splendeurs, n´a rien eu de plus beau dans son mobilier royal´ (Translation: "Apollo, driving his chariot, is presented front face; on both sides advanced the Hours, light figures holding the bridle of the horses. The types are borrowed from what antiquity has left us of the purest and most charming; Apollo's horses are admirable in their skillfully rhythmic allure... We do not know, among the productions of modern industrial art, any work that can be compared to it, and Versailles, at the time of its splendors, had nothing more beautiful in its royal furniture")We learn with this letter that the original model was the property of "Madame Pérère", who was the wife of the banker Isaac Pérère, who placed the order with Barye for his hotel in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré.The work is at today´s date exhibited at the Musée d´Orsay in Paris.

DALI GALA: (1894-1982) Russian artist´s model and muse, the wife of Paul Eluard and later of Salvador Dali. A rare A.L.S., Gala Eluard, to the verso of a decorative colour postcard with a pink perforated deckled edge and a quaint image of swallows flying over a country river applied to the centre, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (14th November 1930), to Valentine Hugo (´Chere Madame´), in French. Gala states that they very much regretted Hugo´s indisposition and her cancellation of Wednesday´s meeting, further remarking ´Voulez-vous me prevenir par un mot quel soir pourez vous venir diner chez moi (7 rue Becquerel) a partir du lundi prochain´ (Translation: ´Please let me know in writing which evening you can come to dinner at my house (7 rue Becquerel) from next Monday´) and concludes by sending ´Les amities de Dali´ (Translation: ´Best regards from Dali´). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Gala. A wonderful letter of good association which also links Gala with the two most important men in her life, Eluard and Dali. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGValentine Hugo (1887-1968) French artist and writer associated with the French Surrealists. Valentine was the wife of French artist Jean-Victor Hugo (1894-1984), the great-grandson of novelist Victor Hugo.Gala´s letter is written at a very significant time in her life. Gala and the French poet Paul Eluard (1895-1952) had first met and fallen in love at the age of seventeen and were married a few years later in 1917. With Eluard, Gala became involved in the Surrealist movement and was an inspiration for many artists. In August 1929 Gala and Eluard travelled to Spain to meet the emerging Surrealist artist Salvador Dali. An affair quickly developed between Gala and Dali which soon led to the break-up of Gala´s marriage with Eluard (although the two would remain close). Gala married Dali in 1934, having lived together since 1929. The present letter, signed Gala Eluard, was written just over a year after Gala first met Dali, for whom she sends regards to Hugo.

R.: (1940-2014) Swiss artist, part of the special effects team that won an Academy Award for the visual design of Ridley Scott´s science fiction horror film Alien (1979) and who was responsible for creating the titular Alien itself. A printed oblong 8vo folding invitation card to the opening of H. R. Giger´s exhibition Traume und Visionen (´Dreams and Visions´) at the KunstHausWien museum in Vienna on 9th March 2011, featuring an image of Giger´s work Li I (1974) to the front cover, the model for which was the Swiss actress Li Tobler (1947-1975) who was also romantically involved with the artist from 1966 until her death.
