A Jennens & Bettridge japanned papier-mâché wine tray, brightly decorated with trailing poppies and with two integral coasters for decanters. Stamped 'Jennens & Bettridge Makers to the Queen', stencil mark R Redgrave, 73cm wide, and a pair of Victorian cut glass decanters, with matching stoppers (5) Literature: Extract from 'Japanned Papier-mâché and Tinware c.1740-1940', by Yvonne Jones (2012). 'Amongst the goods exhibited by Jennens & Bettridge at the Birmingham Exposition of 1849, was "a new shape of wine tray designed by Richard Redgrave in 1847, under the auspices of Felix Summerley's Art Manufacturers, which the Art Union had featured the year before. Decorated with 'vine and grapes' and incorporating 'compartments to receive the decanters and prevent their shifting among the glasses', the tray was shaped to fit comfortably round the waist when carried, and thus provided 'the convenience of horse-shoe tables. Instead of the painful sight of waiters holding trays of wine and cake at a long stretch ... we shall now see them in a state of ease, if not an attitude of grace.'" Richard Redgrave CB RA (1804-1888) worked first as a designer; he was elected to the RA in 1851. His reputation as an artist was established in 1837 with his 'Gulliver on the Farmers' Table'; he became a renowned artist of landscape and genre subjects. He was one of the driving forces behind the reform of art education in the mid 19th century. In 1847 he became art director of the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) and was instrumental in establishing and securing the future of the museum as well as designing a new gallery. He was offered, but refused, a knighthood in 1869. CONDITION REPORT: Tray: no obvious major fault. Decanters: stoppers later.
