A late Victorian silver rectangular inkstand by Charles Stuart Harris, London 1899, with nulled borders and foliage at the angles, with a central taperstick with chained extinguisher forming the cover of a box beneath flanked by cut glass square inkwells, the base with two pen wells, on four panel feet, engraved `To F. J. Langford. On his majority from the staff and others connected with the Bristol Goldsmiths Alliance`, 22.5cm (9in) wide, the base and taperstick 19.25 oz Bristol Goldsmiths Alliance was founded in 1882 with the merger of Charles Taylor and Co. and William Langford and Sons, both of which had been established in the early years of the century. The Alliance manufactured and sold articles made of `gold, silver, gems and metals that lend themselves to artistic handiwork`. Their premises on College Green were described as having `three magnificently yet tastefully dressed windows and a spacious showroom` and Mr George Langford as `the talented managing partner`. Clocks were regulated by electricity to Greenwich mean time.
