Victorian Halstaff & Hannaford rosewood travelling case, rectangular form with brass engraved plaque, quilted velvet lined lid, jars and containers with metal covers, drawer to base fitted out for jewellery, 32.5cm.Condition report:Some nibbles to the glass bodies of the bottles and inkwells but no signficant chips. The metal caps are all in good order, shapes are good, no splits, With the two rectangular boxes, one has an engraved initial to the cartouche, the other has a blank field, and the glass bodies differ - one has a star-cut base, the other not,. Also the tops differ slightly in their engraved design, so presumably one is a matched replacement. The oblong box cover matches the cover with an engraved initial, but the glass body of the oblong box is plain (not star cut) where as the equal lid is on a star cut body. Some patches of scratches to the left hand side of the box, otherwise the rest of the box is in good overall condition. A key is in the drawer, however it does not operate either the top lock or the drawer lock.
A Victorian burr walnut writing slope by Parkins & Gotto, with coromandel and mahogany interior fitted with pen rest, inkwell compartments with cut glass inkwell with silver plated caps, writing slope and inner compartments, inset plaque ‘PARKINS & GOTTO 24 & 25 OXFORD STREET LONDON’, inset and engraved brass plaque to slope, 35.5cm wide, 24cm deep, 11cm high.Condition report:There are some minor indentations to the lid and side. There is some water damage to the back of the lid and the back of the item. There is a crack to the front and another to one side which joins another one running the width of the base. There is some minor loss of wood to the front and sides. The material inside is ripped. The lids inside have mould marks. There are some losses to the material on the base. Circa 16th century A.D. Composed of a quatrefoil bezel set with a point-cut diamond, raised and chased shoulders displaying volutes, billeting and pellets, with trace remains of black enamel. Cf. The V&A Museum, accession numbers M.220-1975 and 934-1871, for broadly comparable examples.2.98 grams, 24.46 mm overall, 16.75 mm internal diameter (approximate size British L, USA 5 3/4, Europe 11.24, Japan 10) (1 in.). Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.201075. A plated Tantalus fitted three cut glass decanters with stoppers, the frame, 38cm wide CONDITION REPORT: One decanter has two bad chips to neck rim. There is no key so I cannot examine the decanters entirely but cannot see any other obvious signs of damage to glass. There is a crest and armorial to front. Needs re-plating I would think. Not marked Betjeman.
