A George III mahogany and brass Hadley s navigational octant Unsigned but possibly by George Adams senior, London circa 1770 The 19 inch frame incorporating central T-shaped hand-piece inset with vacant bone signature plate , the pivoted arm mounted with mirror opposing fiduciary for reading the inset engraved boxwood diagonal scale divided into 20 arcminutes with diagonals cut across ten concentric arcs allowing the scale to be interpolated to 1 arcminute, with pin-hole sight opposing horizon glass, pair of hinged filters and conforming further horizon (backsite lacking), 21cm (51cm) to tip of fiduciary index arm. A near identical instrument attributed to Adams is illustrated in Bennett, J.A. THE DIVIDED CIRCLE on page 132 (figure 131); another inscribed G * Adams Mathl. Instt. Maker to his Majesty, Fleet Street, London. Saml. Clark, 1767 was offered by Auction Team Breker, Koln, Germany on 5th November 2016 (lot 298). George Adams senior is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as apprenticed to Thomas Heath gaining his Freedom of the Grocers Company in 1733. He worked from several addresses in and around Fleet Street, London until his death in 1772, these include Tycho Brahe's Head, 60 Fleet St. where the business was based from 1738. In 1760 Adams was appointed as Mathematical Instrument Maker to King George III for whom he supplied a vast range of apparatus including items for pneumatic and mechanical experimentation almost all of which survive in The King George III Collection housed in the Science Museum, London.
Ω A French boulle pendule portative with two-plane 'chaffcutter' escapement Moser, Paris, mid 19th century The rectangular two train eight-day outside countwheel bell striking movement with two-plane 'chaffcutter' escapement regulated by sprung three-arm monometallic balance mounted on a gilt platform, the backplate stamped MOSER. A PARIS. and numbered 8976 to lower margin , the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel trefoil hands over repeat signature MOSER PARIS to the lower margin of the minute ring, in a cut brass and red-stained tortoiseshell marquetry veneered case with shaped hinged brass carrying handle over small bevel glazed aperture within brass foliate scroll and line strung borders to the cast gilt metal edged top, the front with rising bevel glass to the dial aperture within conforming marquetry surround, the sides of serpentine outline veneered in shell, the rear similarly veneered and with rectangular door, on brass capped serpentine-shaped triple tier stepped base incorporating further brass scroll decoration to front, 21cm (8.25ins) high excluding handle. Very little seems to be known of the clockmaker Moser, Paris however and entry in the listings for the Great Exhibition of 1851 notes him as Watch and Clock Maker, 15 Boulevard du Temple, Paris .Cites RegulationsPlease note that this lot (lots marked with the symbol Ω in the printed catalogue) may be subject to CITES regulations when exported from the EU. PAIR OF LATE VICTORIAN TURQUOISE OPALINE GLASS VASE LUSTRES, overall decorated with enamelled flowers within gilt rims on circular stepped bases, with clear prismatic cut lustres and spangles. 30.5cm high. (2)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: One of the top rims has chip to one of the projections, minor nibbles here and there to spangles and lustres, minor wear to gilding overall, but no other obvious serious damage, very minor nibbles to top projections.
