A FINE PAIR OF GERMAN PERCUSSION RIFLED TARGET PISTOLS BY J. ADAM KUCHENREUTER IN REGENSBURG, CIRCA 1850 with etched twist octagonal sighted barrels signed in gold script surrounded by silver scrollwork and stamped with silver-lined maker's mark, scroll-engraved breeches and breech tangs, the latter each fitted with adjustable back-sight, scroll-engraved locks each fitted with gravity-stops, decorated with trophies-of-war and differing scenes of cavalrymen, the hammers each engraved with a J"ger vignette, set triggers, highly figured walnut half-stocks carved with scrollwork about the tangs and over the fore-ends, fluted butts carved en suite (one cracked through and repaired), scroll-engraved steel mounts en suite with the breech tangs, comprising flush-fitting side-plates of shaped outline, spurred trigger-guards, and butt-caps, and vacant white metal escutcheons: in original fitted case lined in plum velvet, and retaining almost their entire compliment of original accessories including mainspring clamp, nipple key and cut-glass oil bottle (powder-flask and turnscrew missing) 40cm; 15Nin Johann Adam Kuchenreuter (1794-1869) was gunmaker to the Princes von Thurn und Taxis.

Of circular shape mounted with various banded agate roundel’s, 22cm diam; A Louis XVI style gilt metal letter stand, of scroll cartouche design, 10 x 13cm; also a continental gilt metal and blue glass mounted musical box, late 19th century, of tapered rectangular shape, blue glass panels mounted with gilt engraved cut brass panels. 14 x 15cm.(3)
A gilt metal & silvered inkwell, makers mark ‘G & B’, early 20th century. Of shape circular form. The main gilt metal body with foliate, putti mask and shell cast decoration, inset with four silvered electrotype panels of ‘Deer’, ‘Grouse’, ‘Ducks’ & ‘Hares’. With central cut glass inkwell, fitted with cover in the form of a stag. 32cms diam.
A Russian cut crystal, gasolier converted to chandelier, c. 1890/1900. Central silvered metal column, the corona fitted with cut glass lotus leaf mounts, hung with a cascade of strings of facet cut beads in inverted trumpet form. With silvered metal circlet mounted with cut glass spikes, with a cascade of facet cut glass pendant drops below, terminating in a cut glass ball finial. 130cm long. Provenance: Formerly hanging in the main reception room of WARTSKI - Grafton street, W1 premises & before that In the Regent Street premises. This chandelier was exported from Russia by Emanuel Snowman of Wartski in 1927.
A Gilt metal & cut glass gasolier, Continental, 19th century. Converted to a chandelier. The central knop glass column and gilt metal corona cast with swag motifs, fitted with four fan glass mounts. Hung with facet cut glass strings of graduated beads of inverted bell shape, to a gilt metal corona with lappet leaf, cast decoration. Below with a cascade of further facet cut glass, beads to a gilt metal fitting, hung with cut glass ball. 127cm long.
A MAGNIFICENT CHARLES LANCASTER .280 FLANGED (.280 LANCASTER) OVAL BORE NITRO EXPRESS 'DELUXE' ASSISTED-OPENING BACK-ACTION SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 13266, 26in. nitro chopperlump barrels with matt sight rib, open sights and ramp-mounted bead foresight with flip-up moonsight, rib gold-inlaid 'CHARLES LANCASTER. LONDON.', gold-inlaid and relief-engraved with grapevine motifs on a stippled background at the breech and muzzle, incorporating Frederick Beesley patent spring-cocking action, patent no. 425 of 1884, heavily bolstered treble-grip action with side-clips, removable striker discs, bolted automatic safety, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, elongated top-strap, the action, lockplates and furniture profusely relief-engraved and gold-encrusted with grape and vine motifs, surrounding finely engraved and gold encrusted portraits of leopard and tiger, mountain goat and stag, the triggerguard with the head of a lion, the fore-end iron engraved en-suite, the whole on a stippled, colour-hardened background, retaining virtually full original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. highly-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, ivorine pistolgrip-cap and three-piece buttplate, gold escutcheon finely inlaid with the monogram MKH in gold and blue enamel, grip fore-end release catch, weight 10lb. 6oz., in its fine green velvet lined and oak partitioned brass-cornered oak and crocodile-leather guncase with complement of Westley Richards ivory-handled gilt accessories and cut glass oil bottle. The maker's have kindly confirmed that the rifle was ordered in 1907 and completed in 1911 for a Sahibgada Habee Bulla Khan, Prince of Bhopal Footnote: The 280 Flanged round was developed and introduced by Lancaster in 1906 as a rimmed alternative to the (rimless) 280 Ross for use primarily in double rifles. It was initially a great success (King George V said to be a great advocate) but became less popular after several big game hunters lost their lives whilst using the cartridge on dangerous game - notably Sir George Grey who was killed by a lion in Africa.
