•LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY, RA (1887-1976) BLOOMSBURY SQUARE Two-colour stone lithograph, 1967, on wove, numbered 54/75, signed in brown crayon Image 47 x 60cm. Provenance: Oxford, Oxford Gallery, April 1985; Private Collection, Dorset * Lowry identified readily with the lonely, impoverished and marginalised individuals whom he encountered on his rambles around the streets of Manchester and London. His observant eye seemed to be drawn towards numerous lost and dispossessed souls. In `Lowry: A Visionary Artist` (Salford, 2000) Michael Howard suggests that Lowry could find in such themes `a parallel to the persistent and paradoxical strangeness of his own imagination`. Howard suggests that the artist would paint these people `as a means of populating his own loneliness` and that it was `a kind of ritual act that would keep monsters at bay`. Lowry himself did not deny the artistic appeal of the street dweller but he felt more empathy than sympathy for their condition: `I'm interested in all curious people but especially in the sordidness of down-and-outs. I am not really interested in the human story behind these characters, only in what they have become and how their defeat and poverty have helped isolate them, to set them apart and give them the curious, often comical look, that interests me.` Lowry is thought to have produced about 17 original lithographs. ++ Very slight mat burn near mount edges; signature clearly legible but very slightly smudged; slight brown crayon marks within image (above title)
