Captioned "H.I.M. The Empress of Austria", it offers an informal portrait of the Empress sitting on a fence in a riding habit. Her visits to Ireland left an enduring legacy conferring international social status in the sport as well as becoming a folkloric character thanks to her fearless exploits in the saddle. Captain William George Middleton - By "T" (Chartran). Captioned "Bay" as he was universally known as "Bay Middleton" and is shown in top hat, hunting pink and boots. Celebrated as the finest huntsman of his generation, he escorted the Empress Elizabeth on her hunting holidays in Ireland at this period. He had acquired much local knowledge when serving in Ireland and put this to good use on his return to serve as A.D.C. to the Lord Lieutenant, Earl Spencer. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
