* SIR WILLIAM NICHOLSON (BRITISH 1872 - 1949), THE DRUM MAJOR lithograph on paper, titled and dated 1898 label versomounted, framed and under glass image size 25cm x 23cm, overall size 47cm x 40cm Label verso: Ewan Mundy Fine Art, London & GlasgowNote: Born Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, 5 Feb. 1872; d Blewbury, Berkshire [now Oxfordshire], 16 May 1949). British painter, printmaker, and designer. He briefly attended Herkomer's school in Bushey, then studied at the Académie Julian, Paris. Early in his career he worked mainly as a printmaker and designer, notably on some brilliant poster designs in the 1890s, done in collaboration with his brother-in-law James Pryde under the name ‘J. & W. Beggarstaff’. Like Pryde, he had a great interest in the theatre, and he made designs for several plays, including the original production of Peter Pan in 1904. By this time, however, he was turning increasingly to painting. He was successful mainly as a portraitist (he had many celebrity sitters), but he is now particularly admired for his still lifes, typically small, unpretentious, and sensitively handled: his son Ben Nicholson praised their ‘poetic spirit’.

AFTER FRANZ JOSEF SANDMANN THE SPRUDEL AT CARLSBAD Coloured lithograph etched by B.J. RAUH 26.5 x 33.5cm (10¼ x 13 in.)

Lot 176

λ&nbspEDWINA SANDYS (BRITISH B. 1938) ROMEO REVISITED Lithograph printed in colours Signed in pencil, titled and numbered 166/450 Image: 46 x 62cm (18 x 24¼ in.)Edwina Sandys MBE, the granddaughter of Winston Churchill, is renowned for her politically engaged Å“uvre, especially public sculptures. Her work can be found at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Museum, the Windsor Sculpture Park, and Westminster College, Missouri. This limited-edition print is an homage to Sandys' grandfather - it makes visual reference to Churchill's 1926 painting Bottlescape. His favourite champagne, Pol Roger, and cognac, Hine, rest on the table, while books relating to cigar manufacturers line the shelves. To the right hangs a rendering of Hans Wild's 1947 photograph of Churchill at Chartwell. His cigar is conspicuously absent, however, and the box of his beloved Romeo y Julieta in the foreground points to his enduring legacy. Romeo Revisited speaks to the power of painting to immortalise people and personae: Churchill is subsumed into this still life, as if preserved in amber.
