Smith (Andrew) Illustrations of the Zoology of Sou 5 vol. in 3 first edition 279 lithograph or engraved plates all but 9 hand-coloured many heightened with gum arabic occasional foxing but generally clean errata slip at beginning of each vol. tissue guards endpapers foxed modern brown half morocco gilt spines gilt with raised bands [Nissen IVB 880; Nissen ZBI 3868; Anker p.69; Mendelssohn II p.327; Zimmer p.593] 4to [1838]-49-[50]. *** A complete set of the first edition of one of South Africa`s premier colour plate books: “a handsome and valuable work” giving “full particulars of the natural history subjects of South Africa collected by...Smith`s expedition.” (Mendelssohn). George Henry Ford (1809-1876) was the expedition member responsible for the majority of the original drawings and he also executed the corresponding plates. The breakdown of plates is as follows: Aves: 114 plates (all hand-coloured one an aquatint); Reptilia: 78 plates (75 hand-coloured); Invertebrae: 4 plates (all hand-coloured); Mammalia: 52 plates (48 hand-coloured plates 18 and 37 never published); Pisces: 31 plates (29 hand-coloured).

*Vanity Fair cartoon. Mrs George Cornwallis-West [20th November 1912], colour lithograph of Mrs Cornwallis-West by ‘K’, slight mount staining, light marginal finger soiling, 360 x 215mm. One of the most beautiful and inteligent woman to grace society. At the time of this portrait her second marriage to George Cornwallis-West was staggering towards divorce. Perhaps that is why this portrait shows a melancholy beauty as well as her fiery personality, grace and courage. Both she and ‘Vanity Fair’ were getting old by the time this picture was painted, but her ambition, stamina and energy where used to enormous effect in shaping the man who was to become one of the greatest of ‘Great Britains’, her son, Winston Churchill.
