Banking at 4000 feet, 1917, lithograph on wove paper, from the Making Aircraft set of six lithographs by Nevinson, (for the series The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals, commissioned by the British Department of Information and published by the Fine Art Society, London in 1918), signed and dated 1917 in pencil lower right, numbered 22 in pencil lower left, trimmed just inside the image (with loss of 1 or 2 mm to top and side margins), retaining the lower blank margin containing the signature, overall sheet size 411 x 312 mm (16.25 x 12.3 ins), framed and glazed Black 20. Edition of 200. Provenance: Major Charles Fair DSO (1885-1950) and Marjorie Fair, purchased from the Leicester Galleries in March 1918, shortly after the couple's wedding on 18 September 1917. Having enlisted on 10 August 1914, Charles Fair was commissioned in the 19th London Regiment, and saw significant action during the Battle of the Somme at High Wood, Le Transloy Ridge and Bourlon Wood. This lithograph was first exhibited at Nevinson's second exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in March 1918, entitled War Pictures by Nevinson Official War Artist on the Western Front. (1)

Europe. Lehmann-Dumont (Karl), 2. Humoristische Karte von Europa im Jahre 1914, published Dresden, 1914, colour lithograph with explanatory text above image, trimmed to neatline, old folds with some fraying and very slight loss where folds cross, 330 x 480 mm, together with Excelsior. Journal Illustr‚ Quotidien, 1916, eight leaf illustrated paper with a 'centre-fold' of a map of Europe titled 'La Tenaille se Resserre! (the pincer tightens) showing the heads of the leaders of the German alliance being squeezed between the jaws of a giant pair of pincers, the handles of which are operated by the soldiers of the allies, map size 480 x 320 mm, with Der Wahre Jacob, 1904, fifteen issues of the German satirical magzine which was published intermittently from 1879 - 1933, colour printed covers, numerous black and white illustrations and caricatures throughout, each magazine approximately 330 x 240 mm The first described map is the second of two satirical geographical caricatures on the state of Europe published just before the outbreak of World War I. Unlike its anamorphic companion piece, this map portrays Germany and Austria as circus trainers and animal tamers controlling an increasingly wild and disfunctional European menagerie. Uncommon. (3)
Europe. Cret‚ (B.), Carte Symbolique de L'Europe, Guerre Lib‚ratrice 1914 - 1915, published Paris, 1914, lithograph, old folds, some staining and fraying with loss to upper margin, some splits to old folds, strengthened on verso, blind stamp to lower right corner, 455 x 570 mm A satirical French map showing the state of Europe at the outbreak of World War I. Great Britain is represented by a dreadnought whilst Ireland sails a dinghy in the battleship's wake. An enraged German bull charges at the French cockerel and Marianne pokes at the bull with a short sword. At the same time the German bull is poked in its rump by an imperious Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The representation of Austria-Hungary as a fallen crown and a series of graves is deeply prophetic, suggesting the impending end of that empire. Poland is a young girl pleading to Russia whilst Italy turns its back on the continent and plays a lute. Sweden and Norway are shown as beautiful young girls in an almost sapphic embrace. The map is a relatively gentle depiction of European national characteristics before the continent descended into chaos. Uncommon. (1)
*New York. Bachmann (John), [Birds Eye View of New-York & Brooklyn], published A. Guerber & Co., circa 1855, lithograph with contemporary hand colouring, trimmed to neatline with loss of title, 415 x 590 mm A dramatic panorama showing New York and Brooklyn in the middle of the 19th century. The artist shows the city looking north from Governor's Island extending out behind it toward the horizon. The busy harbour and the piers along the west and east bank are filled with an assortment of sail and steam ships. The pre-Ellis Island immigration station is set into the water and connected with a footbridge. By the end of the 19th century, landfill would push the shoreline of the city further out into the sea.
