Beeton, 1861, First Edition, First Issue; With colour frontispiece, additional colour lithographed title, 12 colour lithographed plates & numerous illustrations. The imprint on the coloured lithograph title reads '"S.O. Beeton, 18 Bouverie St, London. E.C.' which on later issues reads "Strand, W.C."' to agree with the printed title. (The lithographed plates had been prepared some weeks before the publishers’ move to the Strand and were too expensive to scrap or alter, while the printed title was not set to type until the last moment. Thus, copies of the first edition, dated 1861, bearing the Strand address on the lithographed title are of later issue than those bearing the Bouverie Street address). Kent & Co.,1854, first edition of a very rare satire, complete with 15 lithograph plates (Kurutz calls for only 13). 8vo. pp: 28, and errata slip at end. An extremely amusing and rare satire on the heights of folly that accompanied the California Gold Rush, personified in the character of 'Tom Tiddler.' ‘The author lampoons gold companies, like the delightful 'Great Doo and Diddle Gold, Silver, Copper, and Brass, Smash, Dash and Crash Company,' and comments on the feverish effect of the word 'gold' on people's imagination. 'Prigger' is defined as a thief. 'Tom Tiddler' can be translated as any place where pickings may be sought or had without effective interference’ - Howell. ‘This satirical piece is based on the experience of the English who invested in California and Australian mines.
