Booth (Charles). Descriptive Map of London Poverty 1889, pub. Stanfords, [1891], general key map titled ‘Map Shewing degrees of Poverty in London in Areas with about 30, 000 Inhabitants in each Compiled from Information Collection in 1889-1890’, lithograph printed in monotone, approx. 640 x 880mm, and four folding regional colour lithographic maps with colour key below each map, each approx. 570 x 615mm, very occ. short closed tears, contained in contemp. blue cloth gilt solander box. The map is based on Stanford’s ‘Library Map of London’, but its importance lies in the depiction and extent of poverty in London at the end of the 19th century. Booth’s survey was highly detailed almost to the point of pedantry. Every street is shown and classified by a colour code into ‘The Lowest Class. Viscious, semi-crimminal’, ‘Very Poor casual, Chronic want’, through severn different orders ending with ‘Upper-middle and Upper classes, Wealthy’. This map was published as part of ‘Labour and Life of the People’, which was Booth’s monumental polemic on poverty. In this work Booth argued that chronic pauperism inevitably led to depravity and that recognition of endemic poverty and the problems it caused must be given greater weight in both in political and social circles. Booth’s highly academic and unemotional approach provided the statistical ammunition needed by those pressing for social change. The map has been described as “Quite the most Important thematic map of the metropolis in the 19th century”. Hyde p.28. Shapero Gallery catalogue, ‘The World Refolded’, Item 16. (1)
