Sonia Handford (1925-2010): The Beatles, linocut, hand-signed to margin; together with an additional unsigned example of the same subject, each 30 x 45 cm; and a hand signed lithograph of a sleeping girl numbered 1/12 (3). Provenance: The artist's daughter. Note: Born to Russian Jewish parents who settled in England in the early 1900s, Sonia Handford was educated at Clapham County Girls’ Grammar School, and later at Wimbledon School of Art (1942-1945) under Lionel Ellis (1903–1988) where she received the ‘Painting with Merit’ award. She travelled widely during her life, beginning with France, Spain, Italy and Greece and later to Egypt, Russia, and the U.S.A. and exhibited at Wandsworth Town Hall (1963), Moriarty’s Wine Bar, West Hampstead (1989) and Shaftesbury Arts Centre (2004). She also had an extensive teaching career at Sydenham School for Girls, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Balls Park College of Education, St. Albans School for Boys and Hampstead Comprehensive. Major influences on her work include: Picasso, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Cezanne and Van Gogh.

Kenneth Shoesmith elected RI in 1925, worked as an advertising artist and executed large scale decorative works for the RMS Queen Mary. CONDITION REPORT: in an oak moulding frame circa early-mid 20th century frame lacking glazing frame with damages to top and bottom left edges and corners with losses to the moulding mitres opened up on all corners sheet loose and has dropped in the frame sheet has ruckled throughout top edge is subject to small tears, chips and pin holes, damages to sheet to the right of the funnel and upper left on edge of sky superficial fine paint splattering on titling left further minor surface defects here and there in fair condition will require some restoration

A lithograph by Honoré Daumier on white paper, taken from Charivari, number 33 in a series of 'Emotions Parisiennes' depicting a middle-aged gentleman sheltering in a doorway, annoyed at the failure of his self-opening umbrella to operate; subtitled 'Nouveau parapluie par Brêvet d'invention, ressorts perfectionnés, s'ouvrant avec une merveilleuse facilté (Voir aux annonces)'; published by Chez Bauger et Cie, printed by Aubert et Compagnie. 1.9 kg, 43 x 31cm (17 x 12.5"). Ex Steinberg collection; acquired London art market, 1960s-1970s. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. Fine condition.
