* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), COME LOVELY AND SOOTHING DEATH lithograph on paper, signed in pencilmounted, framed and under glassimage 44cm x 31cm, overall 62cm x 48.5cmNote: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

Hearld takes inspiration from the natural world, particularly British flora and fauna, the fox and chicken, hedgerow, and songbird. He works across several mediums; his paintings, collage, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, designs and motifs are drawn from a lifetime of looking at pattern books, popular prints, primitive art and the poetry of Blake. Highlights of his remarkable career include The Lumber Room held at York Art Gallery from 2015-2017 where Mark curated a room of miscellaneous stored objects and artefacts and in 2018, Mark re-displayed the British Folk Art collection at Compton Verney. York Sculpture Park celebrated Hearld’s career in 2021 which included several large scale sculptures, flat weave tapestry and papercuts. Duchamp originally issued the first impression in an edition of 30 in 1924, and included a third edition in The Box in a Valise in 1941 (see Schwarz ibid. p. 511, no. 311). In 1924 Duchamp decided to try and raise money for a system he had developed for gambling at roulette by issuing bonds for 500 francs at 20% interest. Of the 30 bonds he originally printed, he only managed to sell two to friends - Jacques Doucet, the noted fashion designer and collector, and the painter Marie Laurencin. The system was a failure, Doucet was only repaid 100 francs and Laurencin nothing. The present example is from Duchamp's second edition issued in 1938. These include annotated, schematic illustrations of geological strata. There are also striking drawings of the huge trachyte columns (the Asses Ears, Lot and Lot's Wife) which are the erosion resistant remains of old volcanoes. While these works provide considerable technical detail they also seem strongly influenced by romanticism - awe-inspiring structures in almost alien landscapes.' (The National Archives).

This Malacca cane has a “photo holder "set within the handle. However the picture set in to the recess of the knob appears to be a lithograph rather than a photo. (At some time this has been glued in place. However a photograph can always be placed over in, held down by the glass). The carved top is of a natural material and is fitted with a screw bronze cap which holds a very thick glass cover in place .The Malacca shaft is particularly stout. It is 35.5"/900mm in length and the knob has a diameter of 1.75"/45mm and depth of 1.25"/35mm. Metal ferrule appears original. Age around mid/late 1800s
