Signed in pencil at lower right. A colorful depiction of two expressive moon faces. Alexander Calder (1898-1976), American sculptor, painter, and printmaker, perhaps best-known as the originator of the "mobile", kinetic or moving sculpture of amorphous shapes painted in bright primary and secondary colors that were delicately balanced on long arching rods that responded to slight air currents. He began with motorized movement but quickly allowed his creative to move in a free-form movement which was given the name "mobiles" by fellow artist Marcel Duchamp. Calder later was able to transform this into large static sculptures, called "stabiles," a term given by artist Jean Arp. He also mastered two dimensional representation in his paintings and prints. The bright colorful shapes are in a delicate balance on the flat surface. Calder comes from a line of American sculptors with his grandfather producing the large statue of William Penn which serves as the steeple for the Philadelphia City Hall. His works are in every major museum throughout the world including the National Gallery in Washington, MOMA, the Louvre, etc. Sold unframed. Frame available for cost of shipping. Fine.
