The sporting or kneeling spirit of ecstasy was designed by Sykes in 1934 after a request from Rolls- Royce. The design was for the more sporting Rolls Royce models, with the aim of improving visibility as well as differentiating a sporting Rolls from the "others". First appearing on the cars in 1934 to 1939 then again after the war from 1945 to 1956. It was ultimate replaced with a smaller version of the standing spirit. Adorned on the Dawn, Wraith, and some Phantoms. It is a rare piece of motoring mascot history. In fantastic condition, the mascot itself stands at 9.5cm tall. Siting atop of a radiator cap, which is in turn mounted on a lovely dark wood plinth. It's total height is 26cm. Signed Sykes an dated 26.1.34

WOYO POT LIDThe Woyo of Cabinda used a pictographic language to convey feelings about specific social situations. Wooden pot lids with motifs carved in relief conveyed messages usually between a husband and wife but sometimes between parents and son or daughter. The lids were placed on the clay pots in which a wife would usually carry the food for her husband to the men’s communal dining space. The lid would convey her feelings and a husband might place a lid on a pot before returning it to his wife to convey his message. A young woman obtained her initial supply of pot lids from her mother and grandmother at the time of her marriage together with advice concerning their use. If a suitable pot lid was not available to convey a particular message it was made to order. The complainant would seek the advice of nkotikuanda, the village sage whose instructions were conveyed to the local sculptor. If the message was too complicated for the recipient to read he would visit the nkotikuanda for a translation. (McGuire, C., ‘Woyo Pot Lids’, in African Arts, Vol.XIII, no.2, February 1980, pp.54-56). Interpretation of individual lids is difficult without detailed knowledge of the language used but the lids contained messages conveyed with each individual element as well as a more general message conveyed by the combination of elements.“But here is a strange thing: in the corner of the hut, a disc of black wood, about twenty centimetres wide. On one of its sides, figures in relief: a spiral, a half-ellipse, a sort of hook forming an acute accent. - What's this? - A lid. You find such lids everywhere in the region from the sea to Mayumbe. They carry signs, carved figures: each of them represents either a proverb or a native fable. But now it's finished: aluminum and enamelled iron pans have dethroned native pots. And what does this one mean? - Wait. We're going to call an old woman. The old woman no longer knew how to explain very well what we wanted to know. We had to resort to the chieftaincy secretary who called on the most competent female elders:This spiral is the centipede: it is coiled at the edge of the path, it is coiled because it senses danger. This means: if you see the centipede curled up, be careful, there is a man nearby. In other words: watch the omens. And this circle?- That means: you have to listen to the person who comes to tell you what people say about you, because it is useful to hear.- And this cut ellipse?- Ah! This is the oyster shell: we opened the oyster, and we gave you one of its halves. It is the symbol of sharing. The meaning is: I gave you something today so that when I meet you again, you in turn will give me something. You understand?- Of course. And that sharp angled hook?- Well, that means that when something is hung high, you have to raise your arm to get it... And everyone laughed. All languages work now. And as it is clear that I am interested in local things, pot lids come out of all the boxes: two first, then five, then ten; and it continues: it would be up to me to buy all the objects in the village. The lids are now passed from hand to hand. There is this one dominated by a sort of pyramid; it represents a tomb and reminds its owner that to enjoy, after her death, a beautiful tomb like this, she must have many children... and that if she does not have children, she will be forgotten after her death. There is this other one which represents an open trap; morality: for the trap to work... you must first set it. There is this other one which shows a standing bird: “when the bird is at the top of the termite mound it sees what is happening”; popular wisdom translates: we must take a step back to judge events. There are other covers, more complicated, such as one which shows a woman followed by a hooded man armed with a stick, reminding us that we must observe the customs of the tribe, or this other which presents a double bell, similar to the iron bells that the chiefs once had to summon the people of their villages, maintaining the spirit of discipline within homes by making it known that “when the chief's bell beats, you must go and listen to what he says”.Seeing the money coming out of our pockets, the natives emptied their huts of their reserves.”(Scohy, A., "Etapes au soleil", Brussels, 1952, pp.115-117)22.5 cm. diameterProvenancecollected by André Scohy (1914-1994), before 1952and by descent through the familyLiteratureScohy, A., "Etapes au soleil", Brussels, 1952, p.115

JORAI FIGUREThe Jorai are one of the hill tribes of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. These powerful carvings, most often depicting a human figure in a fetal position, were carved atop posts which surrounded the graves of notable individuals. Following the death and burial of important persons the grave would be surrounded by familiar objects and possessions of the deceased and over a relatively short period daily offerings of food would be left on the grave. Several months or even years after this initial burial phase, when the family had raised sufficient funds to pay for the required sacrificial buffaloes and pigs, a final important farewell ceremony was held which could last up to a week and as part of which carved posts like the present lot were erected around the grave. Following this final farewell ceremony the deceased’s spirit was believed to leave the area to join the other spirits in the ancestral forest or ghost village and never to return. At this time the grave was ritually abandoned and was no longer visited by relatives and the carved figure posts were left to return to nature.118 cm. high

STUDIO OF JACOB HUYSMANS (BELGIAN CIRCA 1633-1696) PORTRAIT OF CHARLES, 5TH EARL OF HADDINGTON Oil on canvas 125 x 100.5cm (49 x 39½ in.)Provenance: The Dukes of Leeds, Hornby Castle, and by descent Sale, Christie's London, 1 December 2000, lot 3Literature: Historical and Descriptive Catalogue of Pictures Belonging to His Grace the Duke of Leeds, 1902, no.166, Hornby Castle, Cloth Passage.Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Haddington (1650-85), known as Lord Binning until he inherited his father's titles in 1669, was the son of John Hamilton, 4th Earl of Haddington, and Lady Christian Lindsay. Whilst not politically active, he allied himself to his kinsman the Duke of Hamilton in his support of the Duke of Lauderdale in the early stages of the latter's Scottish policy, in which Lauderdale adopted a moderate attitude towards the Presbyterians. In 1674, the 5th Earl married Lady Margaret Leslie, eldest daughter of John Leslie, 1st Duke of Rothes, Lord Chancellor of Scotland. She was heiress to her father's earldom of Rothes, but not his dukedom. In order to prevent the Rothes title becoming extinct, the marriage terms determined that any first-born son was to assume the surname Leslie and be heir to the earldom of Rothes, and any second-born would be heir to the earldom of Haddington.Jacob Huysmans (1630-1696), a Flemish painter born in Antwerp around 1633, gained renown for his portraiture in England during the late seventeenth century. A Roman Catholic who captured much of the spirit of the Restoration court, Huysmans often gave his portraits an elaborate baroque flourish and the artist greatly benefited from the patronage of his co-religionist, Catherine of Braganza, even becoming a serious rival of the more sombre Sir Peter Lely. This artwork conforms to a portrait type employed by Jacob Huysman and his studio in the mid 1670s where the sitter is portrayed three-quarter-length in analogous armour, brightly coloured sash and framed by the same rocky outcrop; the pallid white hands are also typical of the artist. Yet the portraits possess a sharpness and compositional uniformity not present in Huysmans, perhaps more important, commissions (such as in that of Haddington's patron, Lauderdale), thus attesting to this being a studio work.   Condition Report: The canvas has been lined. Fine surface cracking and stretcher marks are visible and the paint layer is thin in places. There are some scratches and abrasions to the varnish layer. Under UV light there are very small scattered spots of retouching across the image, but these are all very minor and not visible to the naked eye. Condition Report Disclaimer

BENJAMIN VAN DE GUCHT (BRITISH 1753-1794) PORTRAIT OF DAVID GARRICK Oil on canvas, feigned oval Signed and dated '1768' (middle left) 55.5 x 44cm (21¾ x 17¼ in.) Provenance: (Possibly) the estate of David Garrick and left to his friend Bartleman Sale, Sotheby's, London, 17 June 1981, lot 61 R. & J. Jones, London Mr Reauvier Mrs Marsden Sale, Bloomsbury Auctions, New York, 'The Paula Peyraud Collection, 6 May 2009, lot 104. Sold Stair Galleries, New York, 30 April 2016, lot 417. Benjamin van der Gucht (1753-1794) was a close friend of David Garrick and painted him on multiple occasions. His posthumous auction `The Property of The Late David Garrick', by Mr. Christie, 23 June 1823, included lot 7, 'V.D. Gucht Portrait of a Gentleman, and Portrait of an old Lady in oils'. The artist was the thirty-second child of the engraver Gerard van der Gucht and studied at St Martins and the Royal Academy. An accomplished painter he was also a successful art dealer and restorer, building an art gallery in Upper Brook Street in 1776. Van der Gucht specialised in painting theatrical scenes and portraits of actors and received significant patronage from the great actor and stage manager (indeed, he once went on a buying trip for Garrick and his wife in Holland and Paris). This portrait is an oval rendition of a threequarter length portrait painted in 1764 by Pompeo Batoni (1708-87), held in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (WA1845.61). Garrick travelled to Italy in 1763-1765 and like many that went on the Grand Tour had his portrait painted by Batoni as a gift for Richard Kaye in exchange for an antique gem that Kaye had found at the Baths of Caracalla. Garrick is holding an illustrated edition of Terence's 'Comedies' (1736) open at the page showing masks for the Andria copied from a manuscript in the Vatican Library Transcending his modest provincial origins, David Garrick (1717- 1779), the high-spirited, ambitious lad from Lichfield morphed into a theatrical icon, dominating the London stage as a naturalistic and engaging actor for three decades. Later, as the commanding manager of Drury Lane, Garrick was at the epicentre of theatrical debates and cultural politics. Besides his dramatic genius and versatility as an actor, what made Garrick exceptional was the extraordinary scope of his artistic and literary achievements, his professional and social status, and his international celebrity. A theatrical superstar who elevated the art of acting and professionalised the English stage, Garrick was also a talented dramatist poet, artistic patron and collector. After his magnificent state internment in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey, Edmund Burke's epitaph encapsulated Garrick's cosmopolitanism, literary talents, and lifelong devotion to Shakespeare: 'Shakespeare was the chosen object of his study: in his action, and in his declamation he expressed all the fire, the enthusiasm, the energy, the facility, the endless variety of that great poet. Like him he was equally happy in the tragic and comic style. He entered into the true spirit of the poets, because he was himself a poet, and wrote many pieces with elegance and spirit. He raised the character of his profession to the rank of a liberal art, not only by his talents, but by the regularity and probity of his life and the elegance of his manners.'[1] Key to his success, Garrick possessed a genius for self-promotion and a mastery of image-making which set him apart from his contemporaries. His features widely disseminated in multiple mediums, thus amplifying his cultural pre-eminence, posthumous reputation and arguably birthing modern celebrity culture
