MONTESQUIEU: (1689-1755) Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brede et de Montesquieu. French Judge, Historian and political Philosopher. Montesquieu is the main source of separation of powers which is today implemented in many constitutions all over the world. His work The Spirit of Law (1748), anonymously published, strongly influenced the Founding Fathers of the United States when drafting the Constitution. Very rare L.S., Montesquieu, two pages, 4to, Bordeaux, 19th October 1748, to monsieur Titon Dutillet, in French. A very cleanly written letter, Montesquieu stating in part `J´ai reçu Monsieur la lettre obligeante que vous m´avez fait l´honneur de m´écrire au sujet de ma nouvelle Edition de la Grandeur des Romains, il serait bien flateur pour moi qu´elle eut plû a un homme aussi connoisseur que vous et don't l´esprit est rempli de tant de belles choses…´ (“I received Sir the obliging letter that you have had the honour to write to me about my new Edition of the Grandeur des Romains, it would be very flattering for me if it had pleased a man as connoisseur as you and whose mind is filled with so many beautiful things…”) Montesquieu further refers to his correspondent´s work, saying `Des que je fus arrive ici, mon premier soin fut de remettre a Mr. De Sarrau votre ouvrage immortel le Parnasse Français´ (“As soon as I arrived here, my first goal was to deliver to Mr. De Sarrau your immortal work, le Parnasse Français (the French Parnassus)”) With address leaf, written in his hand, bearing a red wax seal in fine condition. VG Evrard Titon du Tillet (1677-1762) French officer under Louis XIV, Captain of the Dragoons, war Commissioner and butler to the Duchess of Burgundy. Titon du Tillet wanted to erect a monument to the glory of the King on which men of letters and artists would have figured. The project only led to the writing of “La description du Parnasse Français”, rich in information on the literary and musical life of the time.

Lindbergh further states 'I see you have Whitehead's name in the outline, now. have (sic) you read his Adventure of Ideas? I think the first two or three and the last chapters are wonderful. The middle of the book is too much for me - - or at least it was the last time I attacked it, several years ago. I enclose a book (no longer present) Hocking gave me the last time I saw him. Please be very careful of this one. I went up to Cambridge to talk to Whitehead once, years and years ago. He was an extraordinary man'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lindbergh. COLLINGWOOD CUTHBERT: (1748-1810) British Vice Admiral, notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories during the Napoleonic Wars. An excellent collection of eight A.Ls.S. and eight Ls.S., Collingwood, thirty five pages (total), 4to and folio, at sea ('Ocean', off Cadiz), January 1806 - July 1808, to various correspondents, each of them British Consuls at Morocco, comprising James Matra, John Ross and James Green. Collingwood writes an interesting series of letters regarding British relationships with Morocco (and the role of Jews in contract negotiations for supplies) and the Emperor, also making references to the French and Spanish armies, peace negotiations in Paris etc., in part, 'I received the favour of your letter by Captain Pearse - and am much obliged by the communication of intelligence which accompanied it - you know that only a certain degree of credit is to be given to any intelligence received from the French - for besides the….whole nation….composing stories - they have an interest in deceiving us - however I ascertained their being at Teneriffe - and I have information of their movements from that time (17 Decr.)…….the story of their having captured the Magnamine's convoy was a fabrication - the Magnamine being in England and unfit for sea…….You know the fleet is always at sea - it must be at sea - and the health can only be maintained by a supply of refreshment……and trust with confidence that this important object will have its due weight and consideration with you' (A.L.S., 15th January 1806), 'I have just received and send you by the Amphion a letter from His Majesty to the Emperor of Morocco, with a great quantity of valuable articles sent by His Majesty as presents to the Emperor……The letter from Lord Castlereagh to Lord Nelson which accompanied these Packages, I am afraid was sent to England, amongst His Lordship's papers…..I hope in this negociation which is the subject of His Majesty's Letter, that a free and open use of the Country may be obtained for the Fleet as far as relates to the procuring refreshment and stock, that the exorbitant duty of 26 Dollars a head on the cattle may either be discontinued or reduced to the same terms on which the Garrison of Gibraltar is supplied……I am informed that the most friendly dispositions are entertained by the Moorish Government and the people in general towards the English, and that the difficulties to which we are principally exposed in receiving supplies proceed from the Jews who……turn every circumstance to profit, and by limiting the quantity of stock exported, raise its price to an extravagant height - perhaps these people might be softened by a proper kind of attention' (L.S. to Matra, 11th January 1806), '…..if you can procure me 4 or 5 dozen fowls, with some eggs and a few vegetables, to be forwarded by the Duchess of Bedford, I will be much obliged…..' (L.S. to Ross, 22nd April 1806), 'I have received your letter…..in which you informed me of the French mission. I will be glad if you can now tell me what the result of it was - if the nature of their business has transpired & what success they met with' (A.L.S. to Ross, 12th May 1806), 'I have received your letter…..with….the copy of your correspondence with…..the Consul of Portugal. I am very sorry when these causes of complaint occur, and am disposed to make some allowance to the Portuguese for the circumstances of the times. The influence which France has obtained in Portugal we must expect in some degree to feel the effect of……I have no doubt that had the Portuguese Consul refused the requisition of the French for a vessel to bring their people round to Tangier, it should have been alleged against him as a high offence……I have great satisfaction in hearing that the French did not obtain the object of their mission' (L.S. to Ross, 15th May 1806), 'You arrive, Sir, at a period when there happily exists the most perfect harmony and good understanding with the Emperor, and with the Barbary states in general……The Fleet has always been very plentifully supplied with Beef and refreshments, but the duty paid on the cattle sent to us is extravagantly high (26 dollars a head) while the French and Spanish agents have lately concluded a treaty by which they are only charged 5 or 6 Dollars a head…..If at a reasonable time by a temperate negociation with the Emperor's ministers you could get the duty reduced it would be very desirable……I have on all occasions endeavoured to introduce to their consideration (the Moors) how much they have to apprehend of danger to the tranquillity of their Country by the extension of the French power' (L.S. to Green, 15th July 1806), 'I have received the favour of your letter informing me of the rights of neutrality of the Barbary coast by some of the Spanish Privateers……The fact is that the Privateers boats on both sides are not very regular in their conduct, not very observant of the laws of neutrality when it suits their convenience or their interest to break them……The reprisal made by the English boat - I cannot condemn after his Captures being taken from him as they were - those things should not be encouraged - but if they were put a stop to by authority - or granting passports to Spanish vessels - the spirit of that coasting warfare would be damped - and it is certainly very advantageous to Gibraltar - as it employs a great number of Ruffians who would otherwise be acting against us' (A.L.S. to Green, 31st July 1806), 'The most material business we have with him (the Emperor of Morocco) is the obtaining supplies, which we now do in abundance, but at a most enormous price…..I am led to believe the high duty demanded of us is an extortion by the Jews and others who are engaged in the contract…..I have not heard from England since the beginning of August, but have little expectation of any favourable termination of the negociation at Paris' (L.S. to Green, 14th September 1806), 'I have received your letter……and am sorry to find the Emperor should have been less accommodating than you had reason to expect……but I am afraid remonstrating with him on the subject will not avail us & on the contrary, should he take it into his head to be displeased he may still impose higher duties, for these people are governed less by principles of interest than of momentary passion. He knew the duty was not paid in Gun Powder, but meant it to be understood as threatening that he would raise it, to what could not be paid……Lord Lauderdale was still at Paris, but with little hope of Peace' (L.S. to Green, 14th October 1806), '…..the Emperor and his Governors are not very liberal of any thing but fair promises - but they are a people who will always require a certain address to manage - and what we get - and is so necessary to us, is only to be done by yielding a little to their caprices…..I am glad you could accommodate the affair of the….escape - but the owners of the boats should be informed that if their crews do illegal things in Barbary - they must be subject to the law of that country - and not expect under…..the English flag to be shielded from the punishment they deserve - being in an English vessel protects them in their lawful pursuits - not in the violations of the Law of any Country' (A.L.S. to Green, 17th November 1806),OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED HERE. Please contact us directly for further information.

Carlyle (Thomas, 1795-1881). Author, biographer and historian. Autograph Letter Signed, ’T. Carlyle’, Chelsea, 17 September 1857, to [Reverend Charles] Kingsley, concerning an unidentified person, beginning, ‘Fear nothing on that score. The poor blind "Propagandist" (as you fancy him) produced no change whatever in my notions about Sumner, whom I have known for a long time by eyesight of my own; – not about American matters in my department of them; which indeed, with their uncle-tommaries and Californian nuggets, with their angry crawlings, semi-delirious speculations, and general tumult as of a weir about to burst, seem to me a thoroughly sordid object on the great scale, and do not interest or occupy my thoughts at all in late times. In fact the poor man did not do me any mischief whatever, – except perhaps stealing away in all, some six hours of the last remainder of my time; for who however, in return, he offered me the pleasant spectacle of a human soul happy and content under very scanty conditions. There is a small vein of excellent geniality in the man; – a noticeable resemblance to Leigh Hunt in him, which, encased such an element of alluvial Methodism, and general yo Yankee-doodle-do-ism much amused me by the contrasts and similarities’, continuing in the same vein and then dwelling on his own sense of mortality, ‘… If I can keep alive, on the given terms, for about a year more, I expect to be partly out of it. He will be a cunning fellow that will get me into another like it! …’, some age wear and overall spotting, old tape adhesion streak along inner margin of first page with some see-through affecting words at inner margin of verso, 4 pages with the end of the letter written upside down at head of first page above place and date, ink smudge not affecting signature, 8voQty: (1)Footnote: Provenance: By family descent from the estate of Lady Mary Colyer-Fergusson (1871-1964) of Ightham Mote, Kent; and gifted to her by Mary Harrison in 1930. Mary Harrison (1852-1931), the daughter of Charles Kingsley, and herself the author of best-selling novels in the 1920s.Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) novelist, Church of England clergyman and social reformer was influenced by Carlyle and became a leading spirit in the Christian socialist movement of 1848-54. EDUARDO CHILLIDA JUANTEGUI (San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002)."Aromas", 2000.Woodcut on thick Velin paper, copy 60/120.Ed. Edouard Weiss, Paris.Signed and justified by hand.Size: 54 x 43 cm."Guided by a scent", the final sentence in the book "Aromas" by Chillida, sums up the artist's spirit when working, allowing himself to be guided by the materials, by their essence. As the sculptor himself explained it: "The form, at the beginning, is almost like an undefined aroma that imposes itself as it becomes more precise. This pre-knowledge or aroma is my guide to the unknown, the desired and the necessary". This is a woodcut from the book by Eduardo Chillida made up of five etchings, three woodcuts, two silkscreen prints with relief, together with 38 pages of text that, through graphic work, poems, reflections and philosophical quotations, both by the artist himself and by various thinkers, brings us closer to the Basque artist's thought and work through the keys that have marked his career: time, space, music, freedom, matter, light and the sea. Published on the occasion of the artist's 76th birthday. In "Aromas" Chillida the plastic artist and Chillida the writer join hands to reveal the poet, the philosopher and the profound thinker. The edition consists of 160 graphic series with the numbering; 1-120; I-IX (suite); I-IX (suite in grey Eskulan); H. C. 1-10; E. A. 1-12.Chillida began drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and his interest in sculpture gradually grew. It was during his years in Paris that he made his first plaster sculptures, impressed by the archaic Greek sculpture in the Louvre. He held his first sculpture exhibition in the French capital in 1950. In 1951 he returned to San Sebastián for good, and produced his first work in iron, the material he would work with for the rest of his life. Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous prizes and awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation Prize for the Arts and the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He was also an academician of San Fernando, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and of the Imperial Order of Japan, and was awarded the Grand Cross for Humanitarian Merit by the Institution of the same name in Barcelona. In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, he is represented in museums and collections all over the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MOMA in New York, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
