1987 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Transmission: automaticMileage:31673Before David Plastow left his senior position at Rolls-Royce following the take-over of Vickers plc, he had been responsible for a series of models, amongst which was the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. It was unveiled in October 1980 as a replacement for the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. The coachwork of the Silver Spirit had been designed at the in-house styling centre by Fritz Feller and gave the impression of being stretched in comparison with the bodies of the previous generation. Direct comparison, however, showed only small differences. The new models had slightly grown in length and width; height had been cut a little, although the styling was more modern than that of its predecessor. The interior was dominated by the expected combination of fine wood and sumptuous leather, and it was also the first Rolls-Royce to be fitted with a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy. The long-wheelbase version was called the Silver Spur, four inches longer than the Spirit. This Rolls-Royce was originally supplied by Lex Mead at Maidenhead on 16th September 1987 and has clearly been well cared for, the history folder contains a host of well documented invoices, together with original letters from the supplying dealer confirming the order and delivery of the car. Finished in Black with Magnolia interior, the additional extras on this Silver Spur include a hide headlining and top roll, lockable lid to centre console and cocktail requisites to the rear. An electrically operated sunroof is also fitted to the rear as are picnic tables. Supplied with a V5 registration document and a good history folder, together with an MoT test certificate valid until 12th May 2023. With an invoice price of £90,845.83 this Rolls-Royce looks to be good value given its very modest mileage of only 31,673.

Lot 203

2008 Bentley Arnage R Transmission: automaticMileage:16700The Bentley Arnage was launched in 1998, a large luxury saloon car that replaced the previous Bentley Turbo saloon. Built by Bentley Motors in Crewe, from 1998 to 2009, the Arnage and its Rolls-Royce sibling named the Silver Seraph, were introduced in the Spring of 1998. They were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980 when the Silver Spirit and Mulsanne models were introduced. In 2002, Bentley updated the Red Label as the series two Arnage R. This model was launched to contrast the Arnage T, which was developed to be a sportier variant. The Arnage R was the more elegant alternative although performance was hardly compromised. Featuring two Garrett T3 turbochargers fitted to the 6.75 litre V8 engine which produces 450bhp and 875nM, capable of launching this magnificent Bentley from 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds. Bentley quote the Arnage R as being an unrivalled example of the Grand Touring philosophy, making every journey a unique experience of power, luxury and control. A place where two very different worlds are perfectly united. Tradition and technology in absolute harmony. This excellent Bentley Arnage R was purchased by the world-renowned artist Damien Hirst as a gift for his long-term friend, accountant and financial advisor who was the business brain behind his multimillion-pound career. Supplied by Jack Barclay on the 26th June 2008 for the sum of £182,500 it features a rare 'Hooper' style rear window, designed to give added privacy to the rear occupants but also lending the back of the car a more elegant line. A rear fridge, rear knee rolls, walnut picnic tables and cream dials were among the options. This is one of the last Arnage R's and the closest to 'new' in condition as you might hope to find on the market today. It has been in the same family and has only covered 16,700 miles from new, confirmed by the service book which shows no less than fifteen Bentley main dealer stamps, eight of which were completed within the last 1000 miles covered! The last Bentley service and MoT was carried out on 31st May 2022 and it has just been fitted with two new batteries. Finished in the stunning colour combination of Black Sapphire (very dark midnight blue) with Linen (light cream) leather interior piped in Windsor Blue. This Arnage R is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate, the service book and a follow-on service book showing the service history and confirming the mileage and the original Jack Barclay order form. A unique opportunity to buy the last of its breed, low mileage, faultless history and an interesting provenance.

Lot 223

1979 Rolls-Royce Corniche Transmission: paddleMileage:51800The Corniche was Rolls-Royce's coupé and convertible version of the Silver Shadow produced between 1971 and 1996. The Corniche was named 'Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward two door fixed head coupé' before 1971 when the Corniche name was applied. The exterior design was by John Polwhele Blatchley. The independent coach maker James Young had already custom-made a two-door coupe variant of the Silver Shadow, but Young's model proved less popular and was soon discontinued. The model was assembled and finished in London at Mulliner Park Ward as continuation of the 1965 Silver Shadow coupé and 1967 drophead. The Corniche was also sold as a Bentley, though that model became known as the Continental in 1984. The first car to wear the Corniche name was a 1939 prototype based on the Bentley Mk. V which was never produced because of the onset of World War II. The Corniche was available both as a coupé and convertible, with the former discontinued in 1982. The car used the standard Rolls-Royce V8 engine. It had an aluminium-silicon alloy block and aluminium cylinder heads with cast iron wet cylinder liners. The bore was 4.1 in and the stroke was 3.9 in for a total of 6.75 litres. Twin SU carburettors were initially fitted with a single Solex four barrel carburettor introduced in 1975. A four-wheel independent suspension with coil springs was augmented with a hydraulic self-levelling system at first on all four, but later in the rear wheels only. Four wheel disc brakes were specified, with ventilated discs added for 1972. This particular example is the ultra-rare 5000 series. These were in production however for less than three years and very few were produced, just over 300 we believe. They benefitted from the underpinnings of the new Silver Spirit with hydropneumatics self-levelling suspension, modified with Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control system and gas-charged shock absorbers. The braking was also updated to Silver Spirit specification using the new Mineral oil system. This car has been in the same ownership for the last 25 years, during which time much expenditure has been spent on the car with specialists including the Chelsea Workshop in the 1980s, where it was serviced no less than 22 times between 1982 and 1991 and it was at that time in this wonderful car's history that it was fitted with the desirable Harvey Bailey suspension. In 1983 it had a speedometer change at 25,510 miles. The car was extensively restored in the late 1990s when the engine was rebuilt, re trimmed and had a full bare metal re spray in the colour you see today blue/black. A full photographic record of this restoration is included in the history file. Also, this Rolls Royce is fitted with the rare and desirable factory fitted sunroof and comes with cream leather interior, air conditioning and electric windows. It is also important to note that it is Tax, MoT exempt and Ulez free! A truly rare luxury British coupe highly sought after by connoisseurs around the world. Offered with No Reserve, this surely must be one of the best opportunities available today!

Lot 267

1994 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit III Transmission: manualMileage:52183The Silver Spirit was unveiled in October 1980 as a replacement for the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Direct comparison, however, showed only small differences. The new models had slightly grown in length and width; height had been cut a little, although the styling was more modern than that of its predecessor. The interior was dominated by the expected combination of fine wood and sumptuous leather.  The Silver Spirit was similar mechanically to the Silver Shadow, benefiting from the superb Rolls-Royce 6,750cc, V8 and sharing many mechanical characteristics of the model it replaced. The instruments were supplemented by digital units which gave such information as the time, elapsed driving time and external temperature and were the first Rolls-Royces to be fitted with a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy. Originally registered in August 1994 this immaculate and original example is finished in the desirable colour combination of Royal Blue paintwork with light grey leather trim piped in blue. The file for this well maintained and low mileage Rolls-Royce shows an impressive 18 services at main agents and specialists and an advisory clear, fresh MoT. Also present is the original owners handbook and a copy of the cars construction and test records from the manufacturer. This Rolls-Royce is sensibly estimated given the cars original cost, history and current condition. Offering enormous amounts of style and luxury this car is one of the most elegant vehicles available today.

Attributed to Antonio Moglia (Italian, act. 1765-1783): A rare carved 'giallo tigrato' marble model of a recumbent young leopardRoman, late 18th/early 19th century its head with inset glass eyes resting on its crossed front paws, its tail wrapped around its rear left foot, raised on a rectangular verde antico marble shallow plinth base, 9cm high, 20.5cm wide, 4cm deep overallFootnotes:Provenance:Private West Country collection.By repute thought to have been brought back from Italy sometime in the early 19th century. Thence by descent to the present vendors. Although little is known about the career of Antonio Moglia, one of the outstanding characteristics defining his attributed work is perhaps the naturalness with which he was able to give life to the feline subjects which he appears to have favoured in what was perhaps his preferred sculptural medium, the highly prized marble Giallo Tigrato. Moglia is known to have been active in Rome in the late 18th and early 19th century and was undoubtedly influenced by the acclaimed 'Sala degli animali (Zoo of stone animals)' at the Vatican. Established by Pope Clement XIV (1769-1174) the collection comprised antique animals carved in marble and polychrome hard stones. A favourite tourist destination for visitors in Rome during the Grand Tour period, Pope Pius VI (1775-1799) subsequently enlarged the rooms and sculptors of the time to add the animal collection with new creations in the antique taste. These include sculptors particularly specialising in the restoration of antiques included Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1716-1799), Carlo Albacini (1739-1807) and Francesco Antonio Franzoni (1734-1818). Moglia is also thought to have also worked on animals in the collection and on the restoration of ancient marbles belonging to Ludwig I of Bavaria. In the spirit of the fauna of the Sala degli animali, the present lot, which is undoubtedly a small-scale tourist piece created to bring back from Italy for a desktop or chimney mantel, utilises giallo tigrato marble. Hewn from quarries since classical antiquity (and until recently believed to have come from Corinth), this rare and highly prized stone was in many cases often later re-used, often to decorate Roman churches including Santa Maria Maggiore and Sant'Andrea della Valle. Two comparable feline models also attributed to Moglia were sold Christies Paris, 16th May, 2017, lot 3 and Sothebys Paris, 29th June, 2017, lot 52. Lot 77

Flemish school, pps.s.XVI."Annunciation".Oil on panel.Restorations and faults.Twentieth century frame, following sixteenth century models.Faults and xylophages in the frame.Measurements: 74.5 x 61 cm; 88.5 x 74 cm (frame). In this painting, of excellent workmanship, we can appreciate a style rooted in the Flemish tradition, to which the Italian influence is added. The best of the two traditions converged in the painting of Pieter Coecke, whose models the present painter closely followed, being a contemporary of his. See the compositional and formal similarity between this Annunciation and Coecke's Annunciation (dated around 1525, Escalona Altarpiece, Toledo). The archangel Saint Gabriel appears to the Virgin, who was immersed in reading, as can be seen from the closed book on the table and her gesture of surprise. The distribution of the space, as well as the silent dramaturgy with which the two characters communicate, is similar to that of Coecke. The canopied bed is on the right, behind the Virgin, and the Holy Spirit is inscribed in a golden oval. Separating the supernatural element from the domestic interior allows the painter to describe every detail of the room without interruption: the delicacy of the furnishings, the fabrics, cushions and velvets. The sensuality of the draped robes of the two figures and the stylisation of their canons also stand out. The bronze lamp hanging from the ceiling, the golden rod carried by the angel, wrapped in a phylactery, are all expressed with the subtle language characteristic of the Flemish school, while at the same time combining Italian solutions, for example in the perspective traced through the floor tiles that take us into the sacred privacy of the room.

Lot 394

An extremely rare early 19th century East India Company 56lb tin ingot, salvaged from HMS Abergavenny which sunk in Weymouth Bay, 1805, length 54cm width 14cm.Note:HMS Abergavenny sank in February 1805 off the coast of Portland with the tragic loss of 260 lives. The wreck is remembered not only for the horrific death toll, but also for the loss of its captain, John Wordsworth, the brother of the poet, William Wordsworth. The Earl of Abergavenny was part of a convoy of East Indiamen ships heading for China, on the lucrative trade route via Bengal. According to the ship’s manifest, the cargo of the Abergavenny on its final voyage was estimated to be worth around £90,000, including chests of silver dollars worth £70,000 to buy goods in both Bengal and China. Wordsworth had hoped to make his fortune and that of his brother, who would then be able to devote himself to his poetry.Sadly, in bad weather off of Portland, some of the convoy became separated and Captain Clarke of the Wexford, who had taken charge of the convoy, decided that it was best for the ships to return to Portland Roads and wait for better weather. Pilots were taken aboard to navigate them round Portland Bill, unfortunately, the pilot taken aboard the Abergavenny proved to be disastrously inept. The Fourth Mate, Thomas Gilpin, later recorded what happened: In poor light and high seas, the pilot failed to sail far enough out to sea and the ship was grounded on the Shambles. Captain Wordsworth was appalled. He realised that the damage the grounding had done to his ship would prevent her from joining the convoy and therefore he would lose out on the profitable trading he had depended upon to make his fortune. He cried out in despair: “Oh pilot! Pilot! You have ruined me!” But financial ruin was nothing compared to the subsequent loss of life, including his own, as the ship broke up in the dark with virtually no assistance from other vessels despite proximately to the coast.William Wordsworth and his sister, Dorothy, were devastated at the loss of their brother John. Their grief, in turn, affected their literary circle, especially Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This large collection of extremely rare Cornish tin ingots and mining artefacts are from the collection of Neil Mercer.   Mercer has collaborated with the photographer and designer Peter Russell to produce ‘The Spirit Of Dartmoor Tin’, a large format, lavishly illustrated, limited edition artists publication due late 2022 / early 2023.  Most of these items are featured in, and formed part of the research for the publication which contributes to, and records, the tin working history of Cornwall and Dartmoor and is the culmination of fourteen years of research and practical tin working.    The Spirit Of Dartmoor Tin: a one-time limited edition of 300 copies, sequentially numbered and signed by the authors, within a slipcase, with the copy mediaeval seal of the Devon Stannary in tin metal smelted during the project from historic and modern tin and inset into the case.  Foreword by the landscape archaeologist Dr Tom Greeves; ' ... this is a book of magic, passion and beauty, captured essentially through stunning visual images.
