Henri Hayden (French, 1883-1970)La buvette signed and dated 'Hayden/56' (lower left); bears title (on stretcher verso) oil on canvas97.1 x 130.2cm (38 1/4 x 51 1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired from Josephine Hayden, the artist's wife. With The Waddington Galleries, London, no. A3066.Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London 14 March 1995, lot 59.With Theo Waddington Fine Art Ltd., London, no. 3174.Henri Hayden, born in Warsaw 1883, studied engineering alongside his education in painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. It would be however, that Hayden chose to dedicate his time to painting, moving to Paris in 1907 and studying briefly the Académie de La Palette, a focus of the avant-garde movement which would soon be taken over by Henri Le Fauconnier and Jean Metzinger. In 1915 Hayden moved to a studio on Boulevard Raspail (where he painted the portrait, lot 37 In this sale) and began mixing with the Montparnasse group. He was also near to Metzinger, Severini and Picasso, and Hayden himself would soon convert to Cubism, he decalred 'I only absorbed Cubism in 1915, after having swallowed and digested all of French painting in a few years. This rapid absorption led me, in a spirit of creative synthesis, without even realising, to Picasso and Braque's experimentation at the time.' (quoted in Anisabelle Berès & Michel Arveiller, Au temps des cubistes 1910- 1920, Paris, 2006, p. 252 ).During the 1920s Hayden gradually turned his back on the Cubist movement returning to a more naturalistic style of painting. During the German occupation of Word War II Hayden took refuge in the South of France and on returning to Paris after the war, was devasted to find his studio and much of his work destroyed. Hayden bought a country house in 1962, near La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, and it is from this period which many of the works presented here date from. A Great War ‘Western Front’ D.C.M. group of four awarded to Lance-Sergeant T. Dickson, 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (7878 L.Sjt: T. Dickson. 15/High: L.I.); 1914-15 Star (7878 Pte. T. Dickson. High: L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (7878 Cpl. T. Dickson. High. L.I.) nearly very fine (4) £700-£900 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 3 September 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He went forward with one man to reconnoitre the enemy strong point which was holding up the attack, and then led his platoon with great dash and skill, mopping up the post and capturing three machine guns and fourteen prisoners. Throughout the advance he set a fine example of initiative and courage.’ Additionally annotated: ‘Ayette 2-3.4.18.’ Thomas Dickson attested for the Highland Light Infantry and served with the 1st Battalion, a regular army battalion based in India prior to the war, during the Great War on the Western Front from 5 January 1915. The battalion was part of the Sirhind Brigade, Lahore Division, and took part in the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert and Loos in 1915 before transferring to Mesopotamia to fight against the Ottoman Empire, arriving in January 1916. At some point Dickson transferred to 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, a new army battalion, which served with 14th Brigade, 32nd Division. Landing at Boulogne on 3 January 1916, the battalion served the remainder of the war on the Western Front and at the time of the Armistice was east of Avesnes. It was while serving with this battalion that Dickson, by then a Lance-Sergeant, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions at the capture of Ayette, during the German Spring Offensive, on 2-3 April 1918. The Battalion War Diary gives the following account: ‘2 April 1918: Preparations for the attack of Ayette were then hastened and Operations Order No 17 was issued. The CO held a conference of company commanders at 9am at Bn HQrs in Douchy and the details of the arrangements were thoroughly gone into. The enemy displayed little activity during the day and the preparatory work proceeded smoothly, all ranks displaying great energy and determination. The arrangements for artillery and M.G. support were most carefully made by 14th Inf Bde and these arrangements made known to all ranks. Orders were received that after completion of operations, the frontage held by D and B Coys of the 15th H.L.I. would be taken over by the 5/6th Royal Scots. Operational Order No 18 was issued. 3 April 1918: The operation was carried through in the most enthusiastic and determined fashion, all ranks being inspired with the greatest dash and gallantry and the village captured despite the large number of the enemy found to be in it. It was subsequently discovered that a Battalion and a M.G. Battn of the enemy were in the village. The Battalion commander and Adjutant being amongst the prisoners. Owing to the length of time taken to mop up the enemy cellars and dug outs in the village the relief of D and C Coys by the 5/6th Royal Scots had to be carried out during the fighting and this was successfully done, thanks to the fine spirit shown by the relieving troops. Our casualties were slightly heavier than at first thought, 5 officers and 180 OR’s killed wounded or missing.’ The appendix report in the War Diary on the action makes particular mention of the difficulties caused by enemy machine guns / strong points and the gallantry of the men in successfully tackling these. Sold with copied research.

A fine ‘Birmingham Blitz’ George Medal pair awarded to John Hadley, Member of an A.R.P. Rescue Party on the occasion of the devastating raid on the B.S.A. Works at Small Heath on the night of 19-20 November 1940 - the original recommendation concludes with the statement that ‘the Regional Commissioner considers that Hadley’s actions deserve the George Cross.’ George Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (John Hadley); Defence Medal, mounted as worn, good very fine (2) £3,000-£4,000 --- G.M. London Gazette 11 April 1941: ‘John Hadley, Member, A.R.P. Rescue Party, Birmingham. As a result of aerial bombardment a four storey building collapsed. A man and a girl, who had taken shelter under a bench on the ground floor, were buried under the wreckage. Hadley, after three hours of effort with an oxy-acetylene apparatus, succeeded in cutting a way to the trapped couple, and rescued them. The precarious nature and weight of the debris made any form of propping or support for a tunnel impossible. The building was burning and work was suspended several times so that water could be directed into the tunnel. Hadley displayed great courage and determination in the face of grave danger.’ Lord Dudley, the Regional Commissioner, made a recommendation for the award of the George Cross to Hadley but this was refused on the basis that a works electrician, A. F. Stevens, had been gazetted for the George Medal in January 1941 for the same incident and for a similar act of gallantry. The night of 19th-20th November 1940 saw the first major aerial raid launched on Birmingham as part of a campaign by the German Luftwaffe designed to break the Brummie spirit. Coming five days after the destruction of Coventry, Birmingham fell prey to the most severe attack during the course of the Second World War. Lasting nearly all night the nine hours’ of intense bombing by 440 bombers killed 450 people and badly injured 540 others. Around 400 tonnes of high explosives were dropped during the raid – Hitler’s retaliation for British raids on Hamburg, Bremen and Kiel. Factories damaged in the raid included Lucas Industries and G.E.C. works and the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) factory was also badly damaged – 53 employees were killed as they took shelter behind blast walls, 89 were injured, 30 of them seriously, and rifle production was said to have been halted for three months as a result. Sold with research including copied ‘Secret’ and confidential reports on the B.S.A. works raid and Selection Committee recommendation for the George Medal which concludes with the statement that ‘the Regional Commissioner considers that Hadley’s actions deserve the George Cross.’

Aust: A.M.C.); British War and Victory Medals (8885 Cpl. R. H. English. 14 Fld. Amb. A.I.F.) very fine (3) £1,000-£1,200 --- M.M. London Gazette 21 September 1916. The original Recommendation, dated 23 July 1916, states: ‘For devotion to duty in the most arduous circumstances, being ever the most willing to go forward and bring in wounded, often under fire, and though hardly able to continue from exhaustion, still his fine spirit and sympathy for the wounded enabled him to carry on.’ Robert Hutchinson English attested for the Australian Imperial Force on 27 September 1915, and served with the 14th Australian Field Ambulance during the Great War on the Western Front, being awarded the Military Medal. He returned to Australia on 12 June 1919.

MANUEL MUÑOZ Y OTERO (Jerez de la frontera, c. 1850)."View of Tangier", 1877.Oil on canvas.Preserves period frame with faults.Presents label on the back.Signed and dated in the lower left corner.Measurements. 50 x 69 cm; 73 x 92 cm (frame). In this view the author presents us with an almost panoramic scene, which allows us to make out both the landscape and the actions of the characters in it. Open the road in the foreground, this defines a great depth where a foreground with the figures is structured, followed by another where the landscape is developed and finally the presence of the city in the distance and the sea with the horizon. By the clothing and attitudes of the characters, the landscape, etc., this scene can be inscribed within the current of orientalism, which was born in the nineteenth century as a result of the romantic spirit of escape in time and space. The first orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the beginning to failure. Like Flaubert in "Salambo", painters painted detailed portraits of the Orient and imagined pasts, recreated to the millimeter but ultimately unknown and idealized. During the second half of the 19th century, however, many of the painters who traveled to the Middle East in search of this invented reality discovered a different and new country, which stood out with its peculiarities above the clichés and prejudices of Europeans. Thus, this new orientalist school leaves behind the beautiful odalisques, the harems and the slave markets to paint nothing but what they see, the real Orient in all its daily dimension. Along with the change of vision comes a technical and formal change; since it is no longer a matter of recreating an imagined world in all its details, the brushstroke acquires impressionist fluency, and the artists focus not so much on the depiction of the types and customs as on the faithful reflection of the atmosphere of the place, of the very identity of the North African populations.Manuel Muñoz y Otero was an Andalusian painter, linked to the school of painting, sculpture and engraving, formed under the influence of the artist José Cala (Jerez de la Frontera, 1850, c. 1891). Despite the few biographical data on the artist, it is known that in 1876, Muñoz y Otero was presented at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid, with a painting of orientalist theme, and a year later, in 1887, he participated in the Paris Exhibition, where he also returned to an orientalist theme.

This work contains five parts, the first of which is "The Comforts of Philosophy: in five books, from the Latin of Boetius" (p. v).   The inscription notes: "Botius ' [sic] Consolations of Philosophy was a favorite book with King James I when a prisoner in England and confined at Windsor Castle. It was a popular work among the writers of that day, and which had been translated by Chaucer. Indeed it would be difficult to find, out of the sacred writings, a more admirable text book for meditation under misfortune. It is the legacy of a noble and enduring spirit, fortified by sorrow and suffering, bequeathing to all its successors in calamity, the stores of eloquent but simple reasoning, by which it was enabled to bear up   against the various ills of life, it is a talisman which the unfortunate may treasure in his bosom, or like the good King James, lay it nightly on his pillow. [TEXAS - EARLY NEWSPAPERS]. Gaceta, Del Gobierno Supremo del Estado de Coahuila y Texas. Volume 3, No. 97. [Monclova], 29 July 1835.4pp, bifolium. Woodcut eagle device at head. (Horizontal crease, old tape repair with browning, some minor wrinkling.) Matted and framed (unexamined out of frame). Provenance: Darrel Brown (sold Heritage, December 2007).RARE ISSUE OF AN EARLY TEXAS NEWSPAPERBetween 1829 and 1835, the government of Coahuila and Texas issued four periodicals, of which Gaceta was the second most prominent.   This issue includes a July 8 communication from Rafael Eca y Musquiz, Minister of the Supreme Court, to don Miguel Falcon, Governor of the State, whereby President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna has asked Musquiz to assume the Executive Power of the state to "calm the spirit of discord in Texas and to apply the severity of the law to those who attempt to pervert the tranquility and excite commotion" (translated). In May, then-governor Agustine Viesca left Monclova with the government archives intending to establish Bexar (present-day San Antonio) as the capital of the department of Texas. The issue includes an editorial commenting on the actions of Viesca and the two opposing parties within the government of Mexico: "We believe, without fear of error, that in the Texas Colonies there does not exist aims of overthrowing the government..." (translated). The editorials printed within this issue are in support of General Cos' 5 July Proclamation, issued at Matamoros, warning the inhabitants of the three departments of Texas (San Antonio de Bexar, La Bahia, and Nacogdoches) that any actions in favor of the former authorities will cause war.   45-days after this issue, General Cos commenced his march with 500 soldiers from Matamoros to San Antonio, igniting the first fire in Texas' battle for independence.   See Streeter, Bibliography of Texas, Part II, vol.III, pp.261-263.
