On the document bearing the printed heading 'Carolus Cardinalis Wojtyla - Archiepiscopus Metropolita - Cracoviensis', Wojtyla sends his wishes on the occasion of the Easter day 'Accept, please, my cordial wishes for this blessed Easter Day: May the spirit of Christ´s Resurrection fill your heart with peace, joy and happiness and inspire all your works'. With a printed statement 'Haec dies quam fecit Dominus: exsultemus et laetamur in ea (Antiphona paschalis)'. EX. £200-300
BEATTIE WILLIAM: (1793-1875) Scottish Physician & Poet. A.L.S., William Beattie, one page, 8vo, Hampstead, n.d. ('Monday Mg.', c.1844/45?), to a lady and her husband. Beattie thanks his correspondents for their subscription to a monument and continues 'In such a case the gift is much - but the giver is still more - & most of all the noble spirit with which it is given'. With blank integral leaf. About EX. £100-150. Beattie's letter most probably refers to a subscription for a statue of the Scottish Poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844). Beattie and Campbell were close friends and it is largely due to Beattie's efforts that Campbell was buried at Westminster Abbey, the statue being placed in Poet's Corner.
RABI ISIDOR ISAAC: (1898-1988) Polish-born American Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1944. A rare A.Q.S., I. I. Rabi, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 29th August 1949. Bearing to the upper part of the document a written question addressed to the physician in another hand, stating `If you had to end up your life on one word, what would it be?´. Rabi answers underneath and states `Physics is infinite since it is on the border between spirit and matter´. VG £200-300
HOWELLS WILLIAM DEAN: (1837-1920) American Author, Critic & Playwright. A.L.S., W. D. Howells, three pages, 8vo, 330 East 17th Street, 29th March 1889, to Mr. Merritt. Howells states that he will try and see his correspondent and in the meantime thanks his for his kind words, remarking 'I am truly glad if I have given you any happiness, and I hope you will, so far as I am concerned, drop all notion of our respective literary proportions. Think of me, if you must think me great….as a great failure, a great fraud, who had the will, however, both to achieve and be true' and concluding 'As for you, the future is yours and you are entering upon your dream in a spirit of noble generosity and high unselfishness. You will both live and write your poetry. When I was young we did not conceive of such ideals as are the commonplace of your thought'. Together with a second A.L.S., W. D. Howells, four pages, 8vo, Boston, 18th April 1891, also to Mr. Merritt. Howells states that he was delighted to receive his correspondent's letter and learn that he was in America again and continues to express his delight at his correspondent dedicating a book to him, 'I don't deserve such honor, and I accept it with all possible meekness. I value it beyond words to say. It makes me feel young: if a man of your fresh strength can offer it to me it must be because he finds something of the contemporary in me.' He concludes by stating that he is 'hard at work as usual on a novel' which will be printed next autumn. VG, 2. £100-150
METTERNICH PRINCE KLEMENS VON: (1773-1859) Politician and Statesman, one of the most important diplomats of his era. Austrian Empire's Foreign Minister and Chancellor 1821-48. A.L.S., Metternich, two pages, 8vo, n.p. [Vienna], n.d. [1846], to a Marquis, in French. Metternich states `My existence looks like the one of those corals fixed to a roc which can only move with the roc they are fixed to...´ further saying `Our knowledge comes from a past time which today has the value of that times, and which ancient History calls heroic. All those memories, attached to such times, have an equal charm for the spirit and for the heart!´ A letter of good content. With blank integral leaf. VG. £200-300 Metternich´s correspondent is most probably Lord Henry Petty (1780-1863) Marquis of Lansdowne, one of the most important British Statesman of his time. In 1846 and on his return from a trip to Constantinople, which is referred to in the present letter, he was appointed Lord President of the Council, under Queen Victoria.
VON DER DECKEN FRIEDRICH: (1769-1840) Hanoverian General & Diplomat during the Napoleonic Wars. A.L.S., Frederick v d Decken, three pages, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.April 1804), to a gentleman. Von Der Decken writes in his capacity as Colonel and Deputy Adjutant General on behalf of the Duke of Cambridge (`very much hurt by tumbling with his horse...[and]...unable to write himself´) and asks his correspondent if he `will be so kind to interest yourself for a Capt. Pringgle, arrested by the Prussians...at Embden, being suspected of having enlisted a Prussian deserter for the English service´, further continuing `the Duke of Cambridge has been appointed Colonel of the foreign corps, in one of which the said Capt. Pringgle has the commission of a Captain and as he is an excellent officer the Duke wishes very much that His Prussian Majesty would be pleased to grant him his liberty, altho it would only be by way of favor´ Von Der Decken further reports `We are in constant expectation of seeing the French soon in this country. I am happy to add that we are well prepared to receive them. Our beloved Sovereign is in good health and spirit and intends to place himself at the head of his Army, in case of an invasion´ and also thanks his correspondent for their kind assistance `when I was employed in that unfortunate negotiation at Berlin´. In a postscript he remarks `H.R.H. orders me to addthat he is well aware that you can not ask the favor he requests for Capt. Pringgle in any official way, and leaves it entirely to you, if you can transact in a private manner'. Some extremely, minor light age wear to the edges, VG. £100-120.
