MASANAO: A SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF HOTEI WITH A TREASURE BAGBy Masanao, signed Masanao 正直Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The pot-bellied God of Luck, dressed in a voluminous robe finely engraved with karakusa and flowers across the various pleats and folds, smiling a toothy grin as one hand supports the linen bag on his head in which he stows away the Precious Things, Takaramono, while the other lifts his hem off the floor in preparation to ford a stream. The sack detailed with foliate designs and tied to one side with a finely incised braided rope issuing tassels. The back with generously excavated and angled himotoshi and the neatly engraved signature MASANAO.HEIGHT 6.2 cmCondition: Some age cracks, repairs to the legs and to the tassels of the treasure bag, otherwise in good condition. Fine natural patina overall. The decorations to the robe and bag likely added later by a talented engraver such as Hidemasa of Osaka. Provenance: Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 10 November 2016, London, lot 217. French private collection, acquired from the above.Masanao's place as one of the greatest of all netsuke carvers is justified by the outstanding genius displayed in his work. His netsuke, from their daring originality, bold design, beautiful modeling and living spirit stand in a class of their own. Such is the outstanding character of an exceptional Masanao netsuke that it immediately attracts the eye. Combined with a free and bold style it has a fine and delicate finish. Perhaps to a greater degree than with any other netsuke carver, Masanao's netsuke strike one instantly as the creation of an inspired master and with the power of direct expression. Notably, Masanao is listed in the Soken Kisho, the first publication on netsuke published in 1781.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related wood netsuke illustrated in Sagemonoya (2004) Ninety-Nine Netsuke & One Inro, p. 10-11, no. 13.Auction comparison:Compare a related ivory netsuke of Daikoku by Masanao with similar tassels to the bag, manner of carving and himatoshi at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 6 November 2012, London, lot 114 (sold for GBP 34,850).Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number FR2307502998-K).This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. A VERY LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF TWO RATS GNAWING AN UMBRELLAUnsignedJapan, 18th century; Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as two rats gnawing on a tattered umbrella, one peering through the folds, the other recumbent on its hindlegs, the fur inked for texture with the beady eyes inlaid with dark lustrous horn. The base with a himotoshi and a second natural aperture through the folds of the parasol.LENGTH 9.6 cmCondition: Very good condition with typical wear. The left ear of the larger rat chipped.Netsuke motifs often come from interesting proverbs from old times. Tales and poems with metaphors were popular among ordinary people in the Edo period, which had an influence on motifs. AN AMUSING NEGORO-STYLE LACQUER NETSUKE OF A DRUNKEN SHOJO IN A SAKE CUPUnsignedJapan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The drunken Shojo shown inside a large sakazuki (sake saucer), her hands on the rim and leaning her head over the cup as if to catch her breath after drinking, her face with a drunkenly bemused expression. Good, asymmetrical himotoshi through the underside of the saucer.LENGTH 3.6 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear to lacquer. One chip to the edge.Provenance: Galerie Souquet, Paris, June 7, 1951. Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above, and thence by descent within the same family. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976).A Shojo is a Japanese sea spirit with similarities to a ghost but differing from the latter in the fact that Shojo are tangible. It enjoys drinking alcohol, especially sake. Legend has it that workers at breweries in Japan have seen Shojo lurking about after indulging in their products.Negoro-ware is characterized by relatively simple shapes, and by a red lacquer surface rubbed to reveal an underlying layer of black. The name derives from that of a temple, Negoro-ji in present-day Wakayama Prefecture, where the technique for making the wares was discovered by accident in the thirteenth century.

Tadeusz Makowski (Polish, 1882-1932)Letter with an Illustration of a Cow and a Man on the reverse signed 'Votre bien dévoué, / Makowski' (lower right of the letter)pen, graphite, and wash on paper31.5 x 21.0 cm (12 3/8 x 8 1/4 in).unframed.Footnotes:ProvenanceAlfred and Maria Tarski, Berkeley, California; then by family descent to the Estate of Eva Kristina Ehrenfeucht.N.B.Along with his wife, Maria, Jewish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski was an avid collector of Polish art and amassed an impressive collection of works from some of Poland's most influential artists. Like many artists in their collection, Mr. Tarski was born in Warsaw, Poland to Jewish parents in 1901. Mr. Tarski was educated in Poland at the University of Warsaw and became a member of the Lwów–Warsaw School, one of the most important schools of Polish logic and philosophy, and of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. In 1929 he married Maria Witkowska and they began collecting art. Maria worked as a courier for the army in the Polish–Soviet War. They had two children together, and in 1939 the family immigrated to the United States where Mr. Tarski taught and carried out research in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley until his death in 1983.Translation of the letter, which is written in French and begins below the image of the cow: 31 August 1932My very dear friend, from day to day I postpone my correspondence, and am realizing that the weeks pass quickly and that I leave you without my news. [Next page] The days are already short and the evenings I feel too tired to gather my thoughts to share with my friends. Now I've been here for almost two months and I'm finally able to recap the results of my work, which always remain a bit vague at the beginning. Well! My dear friend, I have more than twenty panels more or less, some of which will require more development in my workshop in Paris - if it is impossible for me to finish them here. At the same time, I'm taking a canvas of 60 which is already slightly drafted out and I hope to push myself to soon be ready to translate onto these according to the documents collected in nature ['les documents recueilles sur la nature']. I hope that you will find in my efforts a continuation of the spirit of my little painting of ruin ['mon petit tableau deruir'] - it seems to me that above all it will be necessary to exercise much of the painter's memory to evoke as needed the shapes and colors without their living aspect. Because more and more I consider a big part of the tradition of imagination to be painting. The landscape doesn't tempt me much, or rather the figure absorbs me almost entirely. I take much more care in finishing each small painting, and this work of patience and of love gives me so much joy, which saves me from moments of despair in the event of my success. It is the only compensation for all the troubles which nonetheless don't complicate a life full of obstacles from all sides.I want to be able to stay for another month in the countryside - especially since I haven't benefited much from it for my health. Perhaps you could do something very small for me; I would be delighted and very grateful. This delicate subject for which I apologize will, I hope, be forgivable given the frankness with which I have always addressed your good memory. The weather is getting a little bad - but I'm not complaining. My puppy is doing well and happily taking his bath every day in the river - is there anything new there from anyone? Maybe an exhibition in September? Your news is a great pleasure to me.Sending you all my affection, my friendship, and my deepest respects to Madame.Faithfully yours,MakowskiFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE WHITE AND RUSSET JADE TIGER SCROLL-WEIGHTTang Dynasty or earlierThe large pebble finely carved as a tightly coiled tiger with large bulbous eyes above jaws agape revealing fangs, the body with finely incised stripes and terminating with two curled tails, the paws tucked neatly beneath the body, the stone of pale white tone with russet-brown speckles. 6.5cm (2 1/2in) wide. In the Bluett's 1991 catalogue, also showing the present lot, it was noted that this carving shared the characteristics of other Han dynasty carvings in being carved in the round from a pebble of whitish tone with a surface that in places is pitted with brown specks of iron rust tone. It was also noted that cup shaped ears and finely carved claws are also found on these jades. A further comparison was made between the incised tiger stripes on the jade carving and those found on bronze animals inlaid with silver or gold of the Warring States period/Han dynasty; see Oriental Art II, 1991, no.9. For related jade carvings of tiger, Han dynasty, see J.C.Y.Watt, Chinese Jades from Han to Ch'ing, New York, 1980, p.40, no.9; and another illustrated in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, pp.80-81, no.46.The present carving of the tiger is exquisitely lively and dynamic, through the jaws open to reveal the menacing teeth, the long thick coiled striped tail emerging from the powerful back haunches, the naturalistic finely curved spine, and the exquisite detail on the underside of the clawed back foot touching on one of the front paws. This dynamism is indicative of an early dating. However, whilst a Western Han dating is possible, it is also possible that this piece is an early revival harking back to the Han style. The tiger has long been one of the oldest symbols for protection in China and is considered as one of the most powerful beasts for warding off evil. The tiger motif inspires both awe and admiration and also embodies the spirit and drive for success. According to Handai jiuyi (The Old Rites of the Han Dynasty), jade seals with a tiger-shaped knob were made for the use of the emperor and empress, indicating the importance of the tiger. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Qing Imperial kilns often drew inspirations from various bronze wares, which is seen in the renowned Superintendent of the Imperial kilns Tang Ying's (1682-1756) words: 'Imitate the ancient style and inherit the elegance of it, innovate new style and examine its source'. See Xu Huping, The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.33. Vessels of the type containing offerings of a thick meat soup, were displayed close to the spirit tablet on offering tables at the Altars to Earth, Land, Agriculture and Sericulture in the Qing dynasty. Chait Galleries, New York, 14 November 2008A European private collectionExhibited: International Asian Art Fair, New York, 2002 (yellow-ground border dish)來源:蘇富比紐約,2008年4月25日,拍品編號83 (黃色盤子)Ralph M. Chait Galleries,紐約,2008年11月14日歐洲私人收藏展覽:國際亞洲藝術博覽會,紐約,2002年(黃色盤子)The dishes are notable for their understated elegance, exquisite artistry, and unusual palette combining falangcai and fengcai enamels, the former translating as 'foreign colours', and the latter corresponding to the 'famille rose' palette. The falangcai enamels, introduced from the west, are apparent on the present lot in the brown and ochre enamelling of the quails. A new opaque palette of overglaze colours developed in China around 1720. In this context, a new opaque white greatly increased the shades of colours available to the potters, and a new pink conveyed the overall palette a softer feel. Much admired in China for their courage and fighting spirit, pairs of quail, shuang an, are a homophone for 'peace and prosperity'. Combined with peonies, the birds form the rebus 'Peace, prosperity and wealth', which would have made the dishes an ideal present for a birthday commemoration. Compare with a famille rose eggshell dish decorated with a pair of quails, Yongzheng, in the British Museum, London, illustrated by S.Pierson, Designs as Signs: Decoration and Chinese Ceramics, London, 2001, p.40, no.34.See one similar ruby-back saucer dish, circa 1735, with quail and yellow border, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 25 April 2008, lot 83.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
