George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862) The haunted hou George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862) The haunted house in Cock Lane London scene of the 18th century spiritual and social phenomenon of the Cock Lane Ghost with a ticket to a seance mounted below and a related contemporary song sheet mounted on the verso pencil drawing with bistre wash signed with initials lower right partial caption in pencil below letterpress ticket and song sheet laid either side of mount 13.5 x 8 cm (5 1/4 x 3 1/4 in) *** In 1762 the Cock Lane Ghost fired the popular imagination as crowds thronged the narrow street where the restless spirit of Frances Lynes known as Scratching Fanny communicated accusations of her murder by her lover William Kent by knocks and scratches interpreted by a 12 year old medium. Horace Walpole and the Duke of York attended one of the many seances David Garrick turned the story into a play and Dr Johnson was a member of the committee charged with investigating the affair. A copy of the book The Cock Lane Ghost by Douglas Grant 1965 accompanies this lot.
