1956 Jawa 500cc Grand Prix Racing MotorcycleFrame no. P-500-36Engine no. P-500-36•One of four built in 1956•Sold by the factory in 1958•Kept in various private collections•Partial restoration of the transmission and running gearCzechoslovakia's National Arms Factory diversified into motorcycle manufacture in 1929, coining the name 'Jawa' for its two-wheeled products. Jawa's operations were combined with those of erstwhile rivals CZ in 1949, and throughout the 1950s and 1960s the marque's main claim to fame was an outstanding run of success in the ISDT, speedway racing and international moto-cross. In road racing, the two companies were not so successful, despite a spirit of innovation that saw them produce a diverse range of designs in the post-WW2 era.Jawa commenced its post-war campaign with double-overhead-cam parallel twins in 250, 350 and 500cc capacities. Racing at first only behind the 'Iron Curtain', Jawa began to venture into western Europe in the 1950s, one of its most successful early forays being Jan Kostir's visit to Zandvoort in 1954 when he won the 500cc event, beating some of the top privateers from Britain and Holland. Progressively developed, the Jawa twins provided star rider Franta Stastny with numerous international wins and places in the 1960s.As ridden by Kostir, Jawa's Grand Prix 500 produced a claimed maximum of 45bhp, good enough for a top speed just short of 130mph. The air-cooled twin-cylinder engine's aluminium alloy cylinders and 'heads sat above magnesium-alloy crankcases, while drive to the twin overhead camshafts was by means of shaft and bevel gears. There was an in-unit gearbox boasting four speeds and the entire ensemble was housed in a duplex loop frame made of square-section tubing. The example we offer is one of the very last of its kind built, being one of four DOHC 500s completed in 1956. This particular machine was sold from the factory in 1958. At time of going to press no information regarding its race history had come to light. However, it has benefited from the expert attention of Jawa specialist, Roger Henderson, albeit some time ago. The work was confined to wheels, brakes, front suspension and primary transmission. The brake plates (magnesium) were stripped and the shoe retaining posts (badly worn) replicated and replaced. Cracks in the plates were repaired and the shoes relined. The front forks were stripped, checked and re-greased, and new Avon Grand Prix racing tyres fitted. No major problems were found. The carburettors have been stripped, ultrasonically cleaned, reassembled and refitted. The geared primary transmission has been stripped and all bearings replaced. The clutch has new bearings and new friction plates. No work has been done on the engine. An example of a rare works Grand Prix racing motorcycle, manufactured in strictly limited numbers and only very infrequently offered for sale, this Jawa 500 represents an opportunity to gain entry into some of the most prestigious of historic motorcycle sport events worldwide. Having died in 1974 at the age of only 47 years of age, the artist became a legend to his Czech contemporaries during his lifetime and deeply influenced the development of Czech modern art. A free spirit through and through, Medek was in permanent conflict with the communist dictatorship in Czechoslovakia and ended up on the index several times. As a result, he was not allowed to exhibit, and public commissions were denied to him for much of his lifetime. Despite these limitations Medek developed a unique style, divided in three distinct creative periods, in an environment where Socialist Realism was the only acceptable art form and in a country that tried to expunge modern art, thought and international artistic the exchange. Sorrow of the IVth Inquisitor from 1965 is the first work of a cycle of 'Inquisitor' works and was executed in a rare time window where the artist was able to exhibit nationally and internationally. Having worked in secret for years under the oppression of the communist regime, the later 1960s between 1963 and 1969 presented a rare window of greater artistic freedom and exchange with Europe and the world. The Inquisitor cycle is an ironic take on Medek's critics and the censors in his life. Coming to the market for the first time in over half a century the present work has been widely exhibited and published. It was acquired by the University of Sydney in Australia only shortly after the work's execution in 1968 and has remained in the collection ever since. The sale will benefit the university's art collections. The present work shows three imposing abstract figures against a stark black background. The spectator is confronted with an intense, emotionally charged scene full of mystical energy and symbolism but also with a spiritual force reminiscent of a catholic altar piece. Three heads balance on sharp, neck like spikes tinted in bloody dark kraplak. Long lashes surround thin lines of unfathomable eyes, and the central figure bears a dark mouth teeming with sharp teeth. Medek used synthetic enamel, a deliberately modern medium, along with oil paint and varnish to create a shiny supple texture. Slashing and gauging the surface with palette knives, spatulas and brushes and layering the enamel and paint on thickly, Medek created a rich, organic, almost skin like texture. Whilst the three Inquisitors in the present work are the art historians Frantisek Smejkal and Vera Linhartova alongside the artist's wife Emila Medkova, the identity of the fourth, referenced in the title, remains unknown. Mikuláš Medek was born in Prague on 3 November 1926 to a prominent artistic and intellectual family. He was the son of the writer and officer Rudolf Medek, the grandson of the impressionist painter Antonín Slavíček and the brother of the music theorist and dissident Ivan Medek. He studied at the State School of Graphic Arts, at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Vlastimil Rada and at the College of Applied Arts in the studio of František Muzika and František Tichy. Initially influenced by the rich Surrealistic tendencies in Prague and artists such as Max Ernst and Salvador Dali, he later became one of the leading exponents of informal and non-figurative painting, despite living under an oppressive regime that considered his work to be subversive. Medek worked in private for much of his life, hiding his paintings from Czechoslovak State Security forces, but he was well known to, and greatly influenced a group of likeminded artists and intellectuals. At the end of the 1950s, Medek turned away from figurative painting and concentrated on abstraction, only to return to more figurative subjects towards the mid-1960s. Throughout his oeuvre Medek worked with the theme of the human condition, destiny and the endangerment of human existence and dignity. He created large-scale works for church interiors in Senetářov, Kotvrdovice and, probably the best known, in Jedovnice in Moravia. Today Medek's works are held in a number of Czech and international public institutions as well as in private collections. After a comprehensive exhibition of his work in Prague's Rudolfinum in 2002 and a major retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery Prague in 2020-21 there is finally increased international interest in his works which only rarely come up at auction. Mikuláš Medek continually strove for creative freedom in an age hostile to intellectual liberty and modern art and rightfully occupies a leading position in the cultural history of Post-War Czechoslovakia. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Alexander Macdonald (Scottish, born 1847)A 19th century carved white marble bust of John Hungerford ArkwrightFacing forward, with a full beard, on a socle base, signed to the reverse: ALEX. MACDONALD/FECIT ROMÆ 1868, together with a red and grey veined marble veneered column, 45cm wide, 27cm deep, 70cm high (17 1/2in wide, 10.5in deep, 27.5in high) the column: 90cm (35in) highFootnotes:John Hungerford Arkwright (1833-1905) was known as 'Johnny' to the family to distinguish him from his father. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford (graduated 1856), he inherited the Hampton Court estate, Herefordshire (10,250 acres) from his father in February 1858 (his mother wrote 'you are early called to the 'battle of life' with more than usual cares & responsibilities'). A man of immense energy, Johnny threw himself into estate and county affairs. His father having renovated the house itself, Johnny entered into the spirit of mid-century 'model farming' borrowing heavily to enlarge the estate to 10,500 acres and to undertake the improvement of his farms, particularly sub-soil drainage. From 1859 he began to show the pedigree herd of Hereford Cattle founded by his father in 1819, winning over 330 prizes nationally, and co-founded the Hereford Herd Book Society. He sat on the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society of England and was made Vice-President in 1898 ('for age, not merit or intellect,' he wrote to his wife). He was also Joint Master of the North Herefordshire Hunt, and founder of the Herefordshire Philharmonic Society (see Lot 99), as well as Chairman of the Stewards of Hereford's Three Choirs Festival. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and cricket and was a noted horticulturalist. He served as Chief Steward of Leominster, County Councillor and Alderman, High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1862, and as Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire 1902-1904. He was remembered by a contemporary as 'the epitome of the English squire'.Johnny married in 1866 Lucy Davenport of Foxley, Herefordshire. They went to Italy on a honeymoon tour in 1868, when this bust was carved. With thanks to Catherine Beale for her historical guidance and research on this lot.Born in Rome in 1847, Alexander Macdonald was the son of the renowned Scottish sculptor Lawrence Macdonald (1799-1878) who he apprenticed under at his father's studio in the piazza Barberini, formerly being the studio of Bertel Thorvaldsen. Antoni Clave, Spanish 1913-2005 - Stage design for Roland Petit's 'Carmen', c.1949; gouache, coloured chalks, pen and black ink on paper, 38.5 x 60 cm (ARR) Note: This dynamic work by Antoni Clave is an original stage design for Roland Petit's ballet from Georges Bizet's opera 'Carmen', first performed in London at the Prince's Theatre in 1949. This celebrated production was renowned for its Spanish style and blend of the classical and modern, and remains one of Petit's most performed productions. Clave had produced numerous set designs in the 1940s and 50s, and was eventually nominated for two Academy Awards for his designs for Charles Vidor's 1952 film 'Hans Christian Anderson'. Like other works from this series of designs, Clave offsets bold strokes of pure colour against the black of the sheet, creating a dramatic and energetic scene. The simplified, yet direct, drawing of the figures is highly characteristic of the artist and shows the influence of his friend and fellow Spaniard Pablo Picasso and the forms of Cubism on his work. Clave has works in major public collections across the world, including Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia Museo, Madrid, British Museum, London and Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris. During his lifetime he exhibited with important galleries including Arthur Tooth & Sons, London in 1955 and the Picasso Museum, Antibes in 1958 and won a prize at the Venice Biennale in 1956. In 2022, the Palazzo Franchetti held the exhibition 'The Spirit of the Warrior' devoted to the artist's work to coincide with the Venice Biennale. Please refer to department for condition report
