John Benson (American, B. 1949) "Statue of Liberty" Signed middle right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The Lady, the Goddess, Miss Liberty -- she has been called many names, but she has always been the symbol of freedom. Our grand Lady of the Harbor evokes the hopes and dreams of all those who gaze upon her brilliant face and flock to her open shores. The Statue was a gift from France to the people of the United States -- whose striving for liberty and social justice helped inspire the French in their own search for liberty. To help bring the vision of the statue to reality, the French government enlisted the help of a young sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Initially given the name Liberty Enlightening the World, Bartholdi envisioned the statue to embody the everlasting spirit of Liberty, which would serve as an inspiration for all nations, for all peoples, for all times. After experimenting with several models, Bartholdi revealed the statue in her final form: a serene but forceful woman in classical garb, with an upheld torch of freedom, a crown of radiant light, with chains of bondage broken at her feet, and a sacred tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. Since her dedication in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood proudly in New York Harbor, beckoning the thousands of immigrants from faraway lands to her free and prospering shores. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. Image Size: 13 x 18 in. Overall Size: 20 x 26 in. Unframed. (B09875)

Harry Schaare (New York, Arizona, 1922 - 2008) "Yankee Doodle Boy" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. He was the Man Who Owned Broadway. The Yankee Doodle Boy. A supreme showman who brought red and blue to the Great White Way. Without question, George M. Cohan was the greatest song and dance man of his time, a musical genius who captured the spirit of America in such songs as "Yankee Doodle Boy," "Over There," and so many others. With a kangaroo walk; a nasal out-the-corner-of-his-mouth talk; a giggle, grimace, and a wagging finger, "George M." won the hearts of American theater-goers from coast to coast. One of Cohan's most memorable songs, one that is still sung today, is the inspiring anthem, "You're A Grand Old Flag." More than any other song ever written, "You're A Grand Old Flag" reflects the enthusiasm of the American people, and their love of the flag as a symbol of a beautiful country and of American ideals and achievements. George M. Cohan was born on July 3, 1878. Image Size: 17.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B05161)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Eastern Goldfinch and Wild Rose" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Birds and Flowers of the 50 States, cancelled December 28, 1985. Many people enter into the spirit of summer when they finally hear the ecstatic bursts of song from the Eastern Goldfinch. This lively bird, also known as the Wild Canary or Yellowbird, sails through the air on an ocean of joy. In summer, when the thistles reach full bloom, mating season begins. The thistledown is used by mated pairs for nest building. Thistle also provides a favorite food, and the thistle seeds are usually ripe when the young Goldfinch needs them most. Its hearty eating habits explain why it is sometimes known as the thistlebird. The Goldfinch's thistledown nest is so tightly woven that is has been known to hold rainwater. The Wild Rose of Iowa has five petals, ranging in color from deep to pale pink, and sometimes even turning white when the flower is fully expanded. The petals close protectively over the many stamens on rainy days and at night. Roses have no nectar, but they have pollen which attracts many insects. After the petals fall, the green seed receptacles, each with a crown of five sepals, swell and grow. In winter the bright red color of these berries, or hips, is most noticeable. Practical uses of Roses, besides their importance as a source of perfume, include a delicious jelly made from the hips of some Wild Rose species. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B09926)

Lot 349

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Mountain Top" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Postal Card for the U.S. 15c America the Beautiful, The Mountains, issue of May 5, 1989. Thrusting aloft with tilted granite ridges and soaring peaks, America's magnificent mountains offer grand and sweeping vistas. Their bubbling streams delight us, their gleaming minerals and dark forests help support us, the dazzling snows of their summits overawe with brooding silence. Mount Hood, the most frequently climbed snowcapped mountain in the hemisphere, draws thousands of hikers every year to its 11,235-foot peak -- highest point in Oregon. The tumbled Sierras, a prime wilderness recreation area, occupies a fifth of California and encompasses three national parks, eight national forests, and fifteen state parks. Almost a thousand miles east, in Colorado, the former mining town of Aspen now reigns as the Rockies' premier year-round resort, offering four popular ski areas and a cultural feast of concerts, plays, and seminars. Almost two thousand miles east of Aspen, along the Atlantic Seaboard, the Appalachians offer a more rounded grace, with soft valleys and dappled autumn forests. Truly, mountains are an important part of the American experience. They helped define the paths of early exploration, later industry and modern tourism. And in their heights, they express the vastness of the American spirit. Image Size: 14.75 x 13 in. Overall Size: 20 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B11950)
