Hardwick (Philip Yorke, 1690-1764, first Earl of, Lord Chancellor). Good Autograph Letter Signed ('Hardwicke'), Wimple, 16 September 1756 , to an unnamed peer, assuring him that he had shown his earlier letter to the Prime Minister, but regretting that matters have proceeded too far to allow for any alteration and that this has been confirmed by Lord Dupplin [the Paymaster General]; he also thanks his correspondent for the copy of his letter to his friend at Norwich and comments on one passage which he asks him to review 'that any irregular obstruction from above should be made to check or stifle an Inquiry, or any sinister art or undue Endeavours should be used to skreen or protect from Justice &c..', but otherwise he considers that this subject of great importance has been treated 'with great wisdom, Spirit & Dignity; and breathes the truest Zeal and affection to His Maj[es]ty & his Government; he also suggests that his correspondent publish the letter, perhaps calling it 'A Letter, from a late Representative for a great Corporation, to his Friend there..', 3 pages, recipient's and latter endorsement, 4to The subject of this letter possibly relates to the trial of Admiral Byng which was in progress at the time and on which Hardwicke took a hard line. Hardwicke was one of the great English lawyers - 'It is hardly too much to say that in the course of somewhat less than twenty years he transformed equity from a chaos of precedents into a scientific system' (DNB).
