Medals: a Lloyd's Medal for Bravery at Sea, to Chief Radio Officer G W Jennings of the MV San Demetrio, 16th March 1942, cased.On 14 March 1942 San Demetrio sailed unescorted from Baltimore, Maryland bound for the UK via Halifax, Nova Scotia with a cargo of 4,000 tons of alcohol and 7,000 tons of aviation spirit. On 17 March she was northwest of Cape Charles, Virginia when the German submarine U-404 torpedoed and sank her. 16 crew and three DEMS gunners were lost and six crew wounded, but survivors managed to launch two lifeboats. Two days later the US tanker SS Beta rescued the Master, 26 crew and five DEMS gunners and took them to Norfolk, Virginia.The Master, Conrad Vidot, was awarded the Lloyd's War Medal. The ship's part in Convoy HX 84 was made into a film, San Demetrio London in 1943.

A Banquet with courtiers entertaining Henry IV of France (1553-1610) signed lower right "Bakalowicz" oil on panel 34 x 55cmFootnote: Born in Poland, Bakalowicz studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts from 1849 to 1854. In 1863, he left for France and permanently settled in Paris. He specialised in so-called 'historical genre' paintings, which took inspiration from sixteenth and seventeenth century French history, especially the court of Henry III and his successor, Henry IV. These pictures were carefully devised to offer a 'snapshot' of history and capture 'the spirit of the times' with focus on the realistic rendering of period costume and interior.Condition report: The frame has some minor losses. Oil on panel. The wood grain is running horizontally and has a slight warp. Overall the support and paint layers are in a good condition. The varnish is even and slightly yellowed. There are small losses to the frame.
