§ Nick Holly (Welsh, b.1968) Posting the Mail signed lower left "Nick Holly" oil on canvas 100 x 70cm (39 x 27in) Other Notes: Dubbed by art critics as the Welsh L. S. Lowry, Nick Holly has gained a reputation for capturing urban scenes of post-industrial South Wales. Growing up in St Thomas, Swansea, he drew inspiration from his immediate surroundings - the nearby docks and the copper works by the river - which he called his "playground". Having graduated from the Swansea School of Art and Design in 1988, Holly had his first solo show ten years later. His latest works particularly focus on depicting people in bustling street scenes - thus capturing the life and the spirit of his local community, or bigger cities such as New York, Paris and London. In the present three works, he uses his iconic palette of blues and greys with touches or areas of red where he wants to draw the viewers in. A black cross labrador and black highland terrier are amongst his famous trademarks. They are recurring characters who often feature in his works sitting side by side, as seen in lots 406 and 407. Condition is fine

§ Evelyn Mary Dunbar, NEAC, RWS, ARCA (British, 1906-1960) An autograph book belonging to Miss Nada Tutt (b.1913), who was at school with Evelyn Dunbar at Rochester Girls' Grammar School. It contains four watercolours by Evelyn Dunbar, one entitled "Blue Bird" and signed lower right "Evelyn M. Dunbar / November 1924"; together with the autograph of Sybil Thorndike who lived in Rochester, where her father was Vicar of St Margaret's Church. Sybil Thorndike was the "Spirit of Rochester" in a pageant in the Castle gardens which is probably when she signed the autograph book. watercolour Provenance: Miss Nada Tutt (b.1913) and by descent within her family Other Notes: The largest watercolour depicts the cast of "The Blue Bird" - a school production in 1926 in which Nada Tutt played the part of Mytyl, depicted in the watercolour. The Blue Bird (French: L'Oiseau bleu) is a 1908 play by Belgian playwright and poet Maurice Maeterlinck. It premiered on 30 September 1908 at Konstantin Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre, and was presented on Broadway in 1910. The story is about a girl called Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl seeking happiness, represented by The Blue Bird of Happiness, aided by the good fairy Bérylune. Evelyn Dunbar was educated at Rochester Grammar School for Girls, to which she had won a Kent County Council scholarship. In 1929, she won an Exhibition to study at the Royal College of Art. She graduated ARCA (Associate of the Royal College of Art) in 1933. In 1940, the Tate Gallery purchased one of her early student works - Study for Decoration: Flight 1930.
