JAMES H. McMINN OF (GREENOCK) MORTON F.C. - A 9ct GOLD SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION SCOTTISH CUP 1921-22 WINNER'S MEDAL By Vaughton & Sons, Birmingham 1922, the suspension ring also stamped 9ct, total weight 21.88gms, engraved verso "Won by Morton F.C. 1921-22, James McMinn", housed in its original velvet-lined tooled leather fitted case, the lid impressed "Scottish Football Assoc'n". Born on February 22nd 1901 in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, James McMinn joined Morton F.C. in 1921. As such, aged just 21 and the youngest man on the field, he participated in the club's greatest ever success, defeating Rangers 1-0 in the 1922 Scottish Cup Final, for which he received the medal here offered. McMinn suffered tough treatment at the hands of the opposing defence, ultimately forcing him to retire late in the game for medical attention. Just before the final whistle however, McMinn made a heroic return to the fray, his exertions described admiringly by the Greenock Telegraph as "a triumph of spirit over pain". Whereas the vast majority of Morton's Cup-winning squad would go on to have successful and enduring careers, McMinn's was ended by 1924 - whether as a consequence of the injuries sustained in that fixture or a loss of form is not known. Thereafter, he worked as a travelling salesman in England and served in the RAF during the Second World War. With thanks to Graeme Ross for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. Nicholas Richard Brewer (1857-1949). Oil on canvas titled "The Toilet," depicting a young woman preparing her hair in a mirror, ca. 1906.Lot Essay:Born in a log cabin in Minnesota in 1857, Nicholas Brewer’s work typifies his frontier spirit and love for the American landscape. He grew up on a farm, where his days were defined by hard work, but he still found the time to draw and paint in between chores. At the age of 18, he moved to St. Paul. He received some art training there from Henry Koempel, a local painter and decorator, and ended up marrying Koempel’s daughter. He eked out a living for his swiftly growing family through portrait commissions and teaching. In 1885, Brewer first traveled to New York, determined to make it as a serious artist. He received a small amount of training there; however, he remained primarily self-taught. He began receiving some success in New York, and continued spending winters there for much of his career. His work was included in several exhibitions, and he was inducted into the illustrious Salmagundi Club. In his later career, he traveled the United States, giving traveling lectures and exhibitions, as well as taking portrait commissions wherever he went. During one productive visit to Washington D.C., Brewer even painted a portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The main reason for his travels, though, was his love of the American landscape. Although Brewer was never able to fully make a living by landscape painting, it remained his true passion. His agrarian upbringing left him with a sense of reverence for the earth, and he delighted in experimenting with colors and textures to best capture the mood of a landscape. He paid particular heed to the flora he passed by, from the solemn Minnesota prairie grasses to southern blue bonnets to the tiny patches of scrub grass clinging to vertiginous California cliffs. His paintings rarely depict specific places; Brewer instead preferred to paint landscapes that he felt represented an ideal, more the spirit than the actuality of a location. Nevertheless, his travels provided him with a rich backdrop upon which to base his works.Unframed; height: 30 1/4 in x width: 26 in. Framed; height: 34 3/4 in x width: 30 3/4 in.Condition: The artwork is in generally good condition. The surface is stable and the colors are bold and bright. There is craquelure throughout the work. When inspected under UV there are areas of restoration along the extreme edges, most concentrated along the upper right corner. There are minor losses to the extreme edges of the work, most noticeable along the upper right corner. Wear to the edges of the artwork. The keys have been replaced and are newer, likely within the past 10 years. Some wear to the frame.
BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant-General, the founder and first Chief Scout of the world-wide Scout Movement. An interesting, lengthy A.L.S., Robert Baden-Powell, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 1st April 1927, to Lieutenant-Colonel [Edwin] Smedley Williams, on the printed stationery of the Union-Castle Line R.M.M.V. Carnarvon Castle. Baden-Powell informs his correspondent that he has sent Mansergh a final appeal 'to reconsider his view against decentralisation in the distant ports of the Cape Province and against the making (of) a Central Coordinating executive for the Union', adding that Mansergh responded with a further definite refusal, and continuing 'I have pointed out in letters and conversations and, in what his executive committee termed "homilies", to them how essential such reorganisation is to progress and how it is asked for by the four other Provinces and by the three northern districts of the Cape Province. I explained that if the Scout spirit prevailed at Cape Hd. Qrs. they would as members of our team sink their own local prejudices or even interests for the good of the whole. All they did was to move a resolution not quite complimentary to me. I could not help thinking new Scouters would laugh if they saw it! At any rate I did - as I felt inclined to explain to them that our brotherhood is not a Parish Council and we don't move resolutions against people - least of all against "poor bloody old me" as General Tucker would say', further adding 'I am glad however to have seen for myself the entire absence of the Scout spirit at C P. H Q. and thus, if the Union Council ask Imperial Hd. Qrs. in England for powers to alter the Constitution so as to admit of decentralisation and coordinating executive we shall know how to act', concluding by remarking that he is pushed for time as the ship is departing and that he wishes for Strickland and Raftery at Kimberley to see his letter 'to show them how matters stand and that I am entirely in sympathy with your desire to go ahead and expand this movement to do big work for the country, under personal touch of leaders through a completed organisation of compact districts under Dist. Commissrs'. Some light foxing to the upper edges of the page and with a couple of paperclip rust stains to the upper left corner, otherwise about VG In September 1926 Baden-Powell had travelled to South Africa, where he was to remain for six months, in an effort to iron out the radical tensions in the fledgling scouting movement there, Originally, it was proposed that Indians be allowed to become Scouts, but in segregated troops. If this worked, then blacks and 'coloureds' would be formed into troops. However, this was unacceptable to Scouts in the Transvaal, where a separate movement for non-whites, called 'Pathfinders', had been instituted. For some, Scouting was to be a whites-only privilege. In 1927, Natal refused to start a 'Pathfinder' group and began to register Indians as Boy Scouts. Similarly, the provincial commissioner for Cape Colony, C. L. Mansergh, decided to ignore a separate organisation for 'coloureds' called 'Paladins' on the grounds that if he recognised them, the Boy Scouts would remain an all-white preserve. Clearly, Baden-Powell faced a difficult situation with each side lobbying for his support. The Chief Scouts efforts at compromise proved futile as, in 1931, the South African government created a youth movement for boys of Dutch descent - the Voortrekkers.
MITTERAND FRANCOIS: (1916-1996) French statesman who served as President of France 1981-95. T.L.S., F. Mitterand, one page, 4to, Paris, 18th December 1956, to Jacques Debu-Bridel ('Monsieur le President et cher Ami'), on the printed stationery of the Minister of Justice, in French. Mitterand writes concerning Emile Hory, a supervisor at Remiremont prison who has requested a transfer to the prison at Epinal, and remarks 'J'ai l'honneur de vous faire connaitre que, compte tenu de l'effectif de la population penale, il n'y a actuellement aucun besoin de personnel supplementaire de garde a ce dernier etablissement' (Translation: 'I have the honour to inform you that, given the size of the criminal population, there is currently no need for additional guard staff at this latter establishment'), although further adding 'je ne manquerai pas d'examiner la demande de changement de residence dans l'esprit le plus favorable des que le cours de vacances et les necessites du service le permettront' (Translation: 'I shall not fail to examine the request for a change of residence in the most favourable spirit as soon as the course of the vacation and the necessities of the service permit'). VG Jacques Debu-Bridal (1902-1993) French politician and resistance fighter, one of the leaders of the Democratic Labour Union. Mitterand served as the Minister of Justice from 1956-57.
COSTA LUCIO: (1902-1998) Brazilian Architect. A renowned urban Planner, best known for his plan of Brasilia. An exceptional A.L.S., `Lucio Costa´, four pages, folio, Rio de Janeiro, 23rd May 1966, on the "Ministerio da Educaçao e Cultura" printed heading, to Anthony Krafft, in French. A very interesting letter, fully related to architecture, with Costa´s thoughts, and with multiple references to history, works and architects. Au XVIII siecle…´ ("Independently of the function, there is "in abstrato" and underlying, an intention that the architectural creation commands - be it an object, a building, a city - so that the adaptation of form to function can lead to singularly differentiated results. I will give you a Brazilian historical example. In the 18th century…") In the first half of the century, the spirit of ostentation and opulence in the Louis XIV style still dominated - heavy curves and counter-curves, gold, dark blue, red and black; in the second period it was already the elegance and the grace of the Louis XV spirit which prevailed: curves and counter-curves acquired suppleness, the use of gold became less ostensive, the blue became clear, pink instead of red, white and grey replaced black. This shows that the form-function relationship must be considered taking into account the intention that drives the process of formal integration") Lucio Costa further refers to today´s date concepts and to Le Corbusier, stating in part `L´idéal de clareté et de pureté formelle géométrique de la Renaissance a refoulé en Europe la conception formelle dynamique (gothique). L´intégration qui est le fondement meme de l´art des temps nouveaux´ ("The Renaissance ideal of clarity and geometric formal purity drove dynamic formal design (Gothic) back to Europe. Today, thanks to modern technology which allows structures where tension predominates, we can observe, almost everywhere, a return to formal dynamism. There are even the pretentious of the so-called prospective art who claim to bury, from now on, with his body, the work of Le Corbusier. They forget his beautiful structure (Gothic) of the suspended roof of the great hall of the Palace of the Soviets, the improvised Pavilion of "L´Esprit Nouveau" (1937) and the Philips Pavilion in Brussels. Le Corbusier was open to all new visions. In his first phase of static design prevailed, the dynamic counterpoint of his painting; after Ronchamp the integration of the two concepts was established. Integration which is the foundation itself of the art of the new times") Further again Costa adds his conclusions on his function and form theory. VG Anthony Kraft (1928-1991) Swiss journalist and editor of architecture works.
ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French philosopher, writer and composer who influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe. Autograph manuscript, unsigned, two pages (the second page with just three lines of text), n.p., n.d. (c.1745-51), in French. As was Rousseau's practice, the working manuscript is penned to the right half of the page, the left half intentionally kept blank for the insertion of appropriate annotations or observations, and is taken from the unpublished work Traite sur les femmes which Rousseau was preparing whilst in the employment of Madame Dupin, the text headed with the reference 'Dupuy p.172' and stating, in full, 'Les principales Dames de Pavie, au siege qu'en fit Fr:[ancois] p.[remi]er sous la conduitte et a l'exemple de la Comtesse Hyppolite de Malespine, leur Generale, se mirent a porter la hotte, a remuer la terre, a reparer la breche a l'envoi des soldats. The principal Ladies of Pavia, at the siege made of it by Fr:[ancois] p.[remi]er under the guidance and the example of the Countess Hyppolite of Malespine, their General, began to carry the basket, to move the earth, to repair the breach by sending soldiers. When the town of St Riquier was besieged by a Flemish Gentleman with a hundred men-at-arms and 2000 men on foot, the town was ready to surrender, having only a hundred men there to defend it, it was only that the Ladies of the city presented themselves at the wall with arms, boiling water and oil, and stones, and bravely pushed back the Enemies. Two of these Ladies carried off two Standards'). Some very light, minimal age wear, VG Louise-Marie-Madeleine Fontaine (1706-1799) Madame Dupin. French saloniste, famed for her spirit and beauty who hosted a famous literary salon in Paris from 1733-82 and owned the Chateau de Chenonceau, known as the centre of the most famous French philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. Dupin employed Rousseau as her secretary and tutor of her son from 1745-51.
