Lot 217

1904 Napier 15hp Four-Cylinder Rear-Entrance Tonneau Registration no. MC 143 Chassis no. 717 Engine no. 618•Offered from more than 66 years of family ownership•England's premier brand of its day•Advanced technical specification with four cylinders and four speeds Veteran Car Club Dated•Eligible for the London to Brighton RunFootnotes:In 2022, The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will honour the magnificent achievement of S.F. Edge winning the Gordon Bennett Cup, from Paris to Innsbruck in Austria 120 years ago in a Napier car. It was a moment that drew great attention to British manufacturing of motorcars and British motorsport, but most of all it cemented Napier's place in the history of the automobile. This majestic Brighton Runner was built by that most coveted name of early British construction, being one of less than a dozen 1904 and earlier survivors of the marque. The remarkable 1902 win came just seven years after Montague Stanley Napier had taken charge of the Lambeth-based family engineering business in 1895 upon the death of his father. The youthful twenty five year old – once described as 'combining the philosophy and the modesty of the rustic cobbler with the best attributes of the unspeakable Scot' was a brilliant engineer keen to move the family business from its traditional fields of printing machinery manufacture into the new-fangled world of the horseless carriage. Fascinated by speed, he had earned repute as a racing cyclist of no mean ability and, mixing in those circles at the Bath Road Cycle Club, he came in contact with one Selwyn Francis Edge, London manager of The Dunlop Tyre Company. Napier's engineering flair and Edge's commercialism, combined with an at times uneasy flair for self-publicity, made for a powerful partnership that was soon to establish the name Napier at the forefront of the British motor industry as well as a force to be reckoned with in international motor racing. In 1900 Napier entered their customer Edward Kennard's 8hp car in The Thousand Miles Trial around Britain, (a blatant piece of propaganda for the motor car), and with Edge at the wheel achieved not only first in class but second overall in the whole Trial against a formidable line up of 84 cars. Appreciating the value of such publicity Edge and Napier set their sights on the great Continental motor races, in particular focusing on winning The Gordon Bennett Trophy – the ambition achieved in 1902 in a spectacularly uneventful drive from Paris to Innsbruck which left the French team in a state of disarray by the roadside.Alongside the epic drives and races Napier concentrated on building cars of high quality at the Lambeth works which they soon outgrew. A move to larger premises at Acton followed in 1902 and by 1906 1,000 men were employed at the Acton factory. Napier was the first to pioneer a reliable six-cylinder car, ahead even of Rolls and Royce and in doing so became the supreme luxury car of its day, but its light would shine more briefly in this form of engineering as the company focused on aero engines. The fact that this car survives at all is thanks to the sleuthing of Captain Ivan Forshaw just after the war. Determined to find a good quality veteran or Edwardian car, he was most interested in the heritage of the Napier company and set about it, as one did in those days, by putting 'feelers' out with a few calls here and there to see if such a car could be found. One did materialise at Elford's Engineering in Southbourne, but when Elford Senior proved impossible to deal with and the price a prohibitive £50, the search moved on. In 1956, a chance encounter at the Post Office in Parkstone with a pair of scrap dealing brothers, the Kents, would prove to be the solution. Diver Kent asked Forshaw if a small chain driven lorry might suffice for what he was looking for, as they'd seen one recently somewhere in Upton in a barn near the road. Off went Capt. Forshaw to peak through barn doors until he found success. As it turned out, the barn was partially collapsed and the owner a Mr. Palmer was very deaf. A form of dialogue was struck up and it emerged that the car was indeed a Napier, eureka! However, it could not be for sale, since removal of the car would mean that the barn would no longer have any support and it would fall down. Negotiations continued whenever Forshaw would pass Palmer's door, and eventually he found that he could have the barn shored up for £1.10s 0d, enabling the Napier to be purchased and removed. Mr. Palmer would volunteer that the Napier was in fact a car that as for many higher performance vehicles had been repurposed as a flatbed lorry, most likely during the war years. It still wore a tax disc from 1923, which confirmed the last time it had been on the road, wearing the registration 'MC143', this would have been its second registration as that series was only offered by Middlesex County Council from 1917-1920, Palmer said that it had been driven down from London to Dorset in about 1923. Immediately upon securing the car, Forshaw corresponded with D. Napier & Son Ltd., they quantified the car as a D45 model which had been built and delivered in 1904. The D45 model was marketed in England as the 15hp, the four-cylinder engine, cast in pairs, displacing 2,525cc and reputedly developing 21hp. This engine drove through a four-speed gearbox with final drive by side chains. In all it is understood that 182 examples were delivered between 1902 and 1904, the first ones with a serpentine radiator and then as fashion dictated a matrix radiator with shroud, as on this car. Ivan Forshaw found that the Napier was in very tired order and the ensuing years would be a labour of love to return it to the road. The mechanical aspect was one set of problems, but another was its lack of bodywork beyond a rudimentary seat. Originally, it was Forshaw's intention to build a new body, but another chance connection through the Veteran Car Club provided a clue to the whereabouts of a period touring body that had been found in the loft of a coachhouse in Snowdonia. Quite possibly the alternative to a winter or formal body, the coachwork comprised a rear entrance tonneau which must have been stored and never returned to its car. The coachhouse itself was due to be demolished, so this was also a remarkable find and it was believed had been fitted to a Daimler of this same era. A little after the acquisition, Mr. Palmer said that he had the car's side lamps which were still in London and sure enough those were retrieved by him and given to Captain Forshaw. As has always been the spirit in our hobby, the knowledge of an enthusiast wanting to restore his car provided a variety of leads, sources and helpers to his cause, including luminaries such as Derek Grossmark, the noted Napier historian. Forshaw whiled away many hours, days, months and years before eventually in 1982 the task was complete.Resplendent in bright red paintwork, the magnificent Napier returned to use and made a debut London to Brighton Run in 1982, and it was entered and completed almost every year from then until 1995. An application to the Veteran Car Club in this period confirmed its date of 1904, carrying certificate number 1658. Again, a period of inactivity has elapsed since the car was used with regularity, but it remains in a cleanly presented order, and as recently as 2015 the wheels were rebuilt by Douglas Andrews the respected wheelwright. It is the felt that it should respond well to recommissioning, so much work having been carried out in its original restoration. Surviving Veteran Napiers are incredibly scarce, a mere eight being listed with the VCC and a further two American built examples. Offered today from more than 66 years of private ownership, the Captain Forshaw Napier represents a generat... For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

GUY SHAW: BAKU MADONNA AND CHILDBy Guy Shaw (1951-2003), signed with the artist's initial GSEngland, c. 1998The two mythological creatures borne from flames and huddled together in a loving embrace, the young baku's trunk 'feeling' underneath the adult's ear and the adult's trunk coiling around the young, holding it close. Finely carved in lightly stained boxwood, the eyes inlaid in amber, the himotoshi between the flames, and signed underneath within a gold-inlaid plaque GS.The late Guy Shaw writes on this subject in the Netsuke Kenkyukai Study Journal, vol. 10, no.1 (Spring 1993), p. 13: “In Baku Madonna and Child I portray another private scene of the mythological baku – that of a baku mother cuddling her child. Both mother and child have been carved in an economical style for a specific reason. The problem I set myself was to capture a feeling of great tenderness and compassion between the two while at the same time expressing the essentially aggressive nature of this mythological creature. After all, baku prey upon the most terrifying of phenomena, our own deepest fears and the horrors that lurk in our subconscious. They are lapped by flames of the spirit world and bathed in the love for each other. The pose reminds me of the carvings of the Madonna and Child, hence the title, a meeting of eastern and western philosophies“. HEIGHT 5.8 cmCondition: Excellent condition.Provenance: Old Viennese private collection, purchased in 1998.Literature comparison:A similar netsuke carved from mammoth tusk is illustrated in Netsuke und Sagemono von Meistern aus Japan (1992), no. 119. Another similar netsuke carved from burr yew is illustrated in the Netsuke Kenkyukai Study Journal, vol. 10, no.1 (Spring 1993), p. 13, fig. 9.

MINRYOSAI: A VERY RARE KURUMI MASK NETSUKEBy Minryosai, signed Minryosai 眠了斎Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Bushell, Raymond (1985) Netsuke Masks, p. 131, no. 306.Bushell, Raymond (1975) Netsuke Familiar & Unfamiliar, p. 145, no. 303.Carved from a kurumi (walnut) and depicting what Raymond Bushell describes as an “idiot head”. The fitting description is owed to the grotesque nature of the carving – the mouth is opened wide revealing the cleverly utilized natural structure of the walnut, and the eyes are large buttons of dark horn. Much of the natural orientation of the kurumi dictates the carving, as the bearded chin is formed by the pointed end and the ears as well are formed by the natural structure of the walnut. At the back of the boyish head of hair are finely carved leaves draping downwards, giving the impression that the 'idiot head' is rather a sage or a spirit. Signed in the reverse within a recessed reserve below the himotoshi MINRYOSAI.HEIGHT 3.5 cmCondition: Excellent condition.Provenance: Ex-collection Raymond Bushell, then European collection P. Jacquesson.Literature comparison:See a similar netsuke in Lazarnick, George (1982) Netsuke & Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures, Vol. 1, p. 770.

In 1954, Penfield became United States' High Commissioner for Austria with the mission to re-establish an independent, neutral and democratic Austria. In 1961, he was appointed American Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Iceland; thence by direct family descent.James was born in NYC in 1908. His mother was one of the first women to drive a car by herself all the way across the United States within a week. James must have inherited her pioneering spirit, because as a young Stanford graduate, he joined the small hand-picked team who travelled to China to work for the American Diplomatic Corps in the 1930s and 1940s. Although his diplomatic career later took him to posts all around the world, his daughter remembers him speaking fondly of "the best years of his life in Peking, Canton and Chunking". Whilst in China, James established friendships with prominent local artists, he was gifted a painting, as a token of farewell, by and from Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), one of the most celebrated 20th-century Chinese artists. The painting dated 1944, subsequently sold in this saleroom, 08 November 2017, lot 87.Note: Note: For the 'Manjusri and Wutai Shan' woodblock print, compare to a similar example offered at Hengsha Ancient Art Kyoto, 26 March 022, lot 85; Also see a related woodblock print in the similar arrangement and title, dated to ca. 1870AD, 91cm x 50cm, is in the collection of the National Library of China. The group of ink rubbings was mostly related to and taken from the Wu Family Shrines, of which the Wu Liang Shrine is the best known. It was the family shrine of the Wu clan of the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220AD). Located at the Wuzhai Village, Jiaxiang County, Shandong Province. The original shrine was carved and engraved with images of legendary rulers and paragons of filial piety and loyalty, historical and mythological stories, scenes of feasting, homage, processions, omens, and other figural and decorative designs.Included in this lot, the pictorial rubbings comprise two copies from the Left Chamber Four, one from the Left Chamber Five, and one from the Left Chamber Nine, all of which are General Wu Ban's (fl. 221–239) shrine; together with two copies of the Front Chamber Ten, for the Wu Rong's shrine. Comparable examples are in the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, with respective digital archive numbers in the above order: '27403', '27405', '27418', and '12757-11'. The Wu Family Shrine assemblage was only linked to actual carved stones in the Qing Dynasty in 1786AD when the amateur archaeologist Huang Yi (1744–1802) claimed to have discovered them at the cemetery ruins. Subsequently, scholars Weng Fanggang (1733-1818), Li Dongqi, and others decided to renovate the shrines. Included in this lot, is the inscription carved to record the renovation. Entitled 'Chong Li Han Wu Shi Shi Shi Ti Ji' (The Blurb of Reconstruction of the Wu Stone Shrine in the Han Dynasty), dated to the fifty-second and fifty-seventh years of the Qianlong period, 1787AD and 1792AD. See Ibid. digital archive no. '12469', '25940-1', '25940-4', '25940-3', '25940-2', and '25937'. Another rubbing is from the Xiaotang Mountain Han Shrine. See Ibid. no. '11204-3'. The rest of the figures and horses are unidentified. A large collection of similar rubbings rubbed in the 1920s to 1940s, including the rubbings from the Wu Family Shrines; rubbings from a temple, Jiaxiang, Shandong Province, ca. 100AD; rubbings from Guanyu Temple, Suijia Zhuang Village, Shandong Province, ca. 100AD, were donated to the Seattle Art Museum by James Kedzie Penfield. See some examples with accession no. '92.62', '92.69', '92.75', and '91.255.1.25'.

A RARE PAIR OF TIANQI AND QIANGJIN LACQUER SQUARE 'FLORAL' INCENSE STANDS17th centuryEach finely incised and coloured in varying shades of red, green and burnt amber shading to black, all picked out with traces of gold filling the incisions, the square tops finely incised and gilt with a central panel depicting a gnarled branch of blossoming peonies, surrounded by a border enclosing four cartouches decorated with 'The Four Gentlemen', namely orchids, bamboo, prunus and chrysanthemums, all reserved on a diaper ground, the recessed waist with lotus designs over a broad, cusped and barbed apron also decorated with chrysanthemums, all raised on four tall curling legs painted with florettes and foliage, terminating in outward curving acanthus feet. Each 90.4cm (35 1/2in) high. (2).Footnotes:十七世紀 戧金填漆花卉紋香幾一對The present lot is a rare and fine example of the painted lacquer craftsmanship used for Imperial furniture in the Court, combining the techniques of qiangjin ('etched gold') with incised and gilt lines of the design, and tianqi ('filled-in') with applied coloured lacquer set in contrast to the ground colour. Both techniques served to accentuate the effect of opulence and richness of the design in the Palace setting. Compare with a similar lacquer 'dragon' incense stand, 17th century, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (acc.no.M.2004.51). See also a related incense stand in a woodblock print from Tan qing wan, late Ming dynasty, illustrated by C.Evarts, C.L.Ma Collection: Traditional Chinese Furniture from the Greater Shanxi Region, Hong Kong, 1999, p.200, where he also illustrates a related nanmu incense stand of similar shape, 18th century, no.98. Another related incense stand is in another woodblock print from Pipa ji, Wanli, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (I), Hong Kong, 2002, p.24. Stands were used in both religious and secular contexts and served a variety of purposes, as contemporaneous paintings and woodblock prints illustrate. They were usually positioned in the centre of a shrine or in a room, such stands often supported incense burners. The Buddhist world was thought of as being suffused with with clouds and wondrously fragrant incense, creating magical realms that uplifted and purified the spirit; incense carried the piety and the desire of the worshippers to the gods and brought down the deities' purifying breath. It thus created the ideal mood to sustain a great debate between the bodhisattva and the learned layman and spreads their wisdom throughout the world; see S.Handler, The austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Lacquer, Hong Kong, 2001, p.225.Incense was not just used during the performance of religious rituals; Sothern Song connoisseur, Zhao Xigu, in his guidebook focusing on the scholar's elegant taste, has a chapter on the antique zither referring to the burning of incense whilst playing. Incense purified and concentrated the mind, producing that exaltation necessary for both playing and appreciating music; see S.Handler, The Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Hong Kong, 2001, p.297. Stands also supported a variety of other objects including miniature gardens and antiques.See another 'elephant' incense stand, 18th century, with similarly decorated tall curling legs with slipper feet, which was sold at Bonhams London, 16 May 2019, lot 75, and a related 'dragon' incense stand, 17th century, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2019, lot 714.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: † TP† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
