Nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, the rich spirit that runs from their “curiously small stills”, and their penchant for Spanish Sherry casks have proven to be a match made in Heaven, delighting the tastebuds of whisky connoisseurs around the globe. With demand far outstripping supply, they embarked upon one of the most ambitious distillery upgrades of all time, investing £140 million in an ultra-modern still house and visitor centre that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, and is home to a whopping 36 stills capable of churning out around 15 million litres of spirit every year. Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.Matured in a combination of Oloroso and Fino Sherry casks, this expression was created for the Travel Retail market.40% ABV / 1LFill level in low neck.

Lot 42

GLEN ORD 28 YEAR OLD 2003 RELEASESingle malt. The Black Isle distillery of Glen Ord has suffered a bit of an identity crisis over the years. It has produced single malt whisky under a variety of names: Glen Ord, Glenordie, Ordie, Muir of Ord, and (simply) Ord. Today its name plays second fiddle to the Singleton brand, of which it is a part, alongside Glendullan and Dufftown distilleries.Like Springbank and Roseisle, Glen Ord is one the few distilleries that can satisfy its malting requirements in house. Their use of very lightly peated malt, combined with a distillation process that maximises copper contact, results in a grassy spirit that reveals notes of ginger as it matures in the cask. This 28 Year Old formed part of Diageo's 2003 special annual releases.58.3% ABV / 70clPlease see additional image.

Lot 44

ARDBEG BLASDASingle malt.Located on the island’s rugged south coast, Ardbeg distillery represents the peatier end of the Islay spectrum. While it has endured some tough times, spending several years mothballed, the distillery has undergone a bit of a renaissance since being bought over by Glenmorangie and is now on a stable footing. While it still retains its signature sooty spirit, Ardbeg has also adopted its new parent company’s fondness for experimental cask finishes, arguably increasing its appeal. The Blasda represents a departure from the Ardbeg norm, featuring a reduced peating level of only 8ppm.46% ABV / 70cl

Lot 61

TULLIBARDINE 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.40% ABV / 70clJURA SUPERSTITIONSingle malt. With deer outnumbering people by around 25 to 1, it’s surprising the isle of Jura can sustain a distillery at all, let alone a decent sized one capable of supplying 2.2 million litres of spirit per annum. Although it was originally founded in 1810, the distillery closed at the turn of the century and wasn’t revived until the 1960 when it was completely rebuilt by two of the island’s local landowners.Despite the abundant peat available on the island, Jura’s style has tended to be somewhat lighter, as dictated by the blending requirements of its owners over the years. Today it is operated by Whyte & MacKay, under the Emperador umbrella.40% ABV / 70cl

Lot 66

BUNNAHABHAIN 12 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Purpose built in 1881 by William Baxter, Bunnahabhain distillery on the northeast coast of Islay featured housing for its workers, as well as its own pier for ease of transporting whisky and materials to and from the mainland. As with most distilleries, much of its life was spent producing blending stock, but in the late 1980s it began to appear as a single malt.Initially this single malt output was mostly sherry matured and so lightly peated as to be barely perceptible, placing Bunna’ firmly in the minority of Islay whiskies. However, since its takeover by Distell in 2013 around 20% of the spirit produced there is now heavily peated, with these expressions bearing the name “Moine” (the Gaelic word for peat). This is an older style 12 year old that we estimate is from the 1990s.40% ABV / 70clMinor rusting to tube lid.

Lot 69

LAPHROAIG 10 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Founded in 1815, and often considered to be the whisky equivalent of Marmite (in that you either love it or hate it), Laphroaig is a smoky, medicinal tasting whisky from the south coast of Islay. Clearly more people fall into the “love” category though, as Laphroaig is one of the top ten best selling single malts in the world. Just as well, then, that it is the second largest distillery on the island (after Caol Ila), capable of producing 3.4 million litres of spirit per annum. The distillery still retains its own malting floor, and although it only covers 20% of their requirements, it is instrumental in providing the creosote-y, phenolic character that defines the Laphroaig spirit.40% ABV / 70clFill level in mid neck.

Lot 78

Lot 90

DALMORE 50 YEAR OLDSingle malt.Dalmore have invested a lot to position themselves as a luxury brand, with their high-end expressions always resplendent in crystal decanters and lavish packaging. And you won’t ever hear them boasting about different cask finishes. Oh no, no, no; they prefer to “finesse” their spirit in a variety of exotic sounding wood. While this type of posturing isn’t exactly unique in the whisky industry, it does create a nagging doubt that the whole thing might just be a case of style over substance.Thankfully, Dalmore’s spirit (more often than not) lives up to the hype. They have a complicated distillation process that utilises mismatched stills to produce distillates with different characteristics. These are then vatted together, before being filled into the distillery’s preferred Sherry casks.Only 191 of these exquisite Portuguese crystal decanters were created. The whisky itself is a vatting of some of the very oldest casks in Dalmore's warehouses at the time.52.7% ABV / 10cl

(13 3/8 to 14 3/16 in.)Exécuté en 1960. Ces œuvres sont les modèles originaux réalisés par Cocteau pour l'édition de 15.all signed and dated Jean Cocteau 1960-1961; inscribed original (underneath)the set of 7 partially glazed terracotta plates with engobeConceived in 1960.These works are the original model made by Cocteau for the subsequent edition of 15.Footnotes:BibliographieA. »Jean CocteauThe Satyricon is considered to be one of the first novels in the history of literature. Written in the 1st century AD and commonly attributed to Petronius, this satirical novel is written in prose and verse. It consists of a framework story, 'Adventures of Encolpe' and three sub-stories: 'The Ephebe of Pergamon', 'The Matron of Ephesus' and 'The Feast at Trimalcion'.This book recounts the travels of three young men: Encolpe, Ascylte and Giton. Decadent Italy of the first century is the scene of their tragic adventures and tumultuous love-affairs. They face divine punishments on the backdrop of an unjust and violent society. The story of this love triangle which unfolds between flight and roaming is a satirical warning against a society that perverts youth and dooms it to a certain fate of disaffection.'Satiricon' could also literally be translated as 'story of satyrs'. Satyrs, fauns and other goat-footed beings are recurrent in the work of Jean Cocteau and especially in his ceramics. Passionate about Greco-Roman mythology, the artist likes to represent the famous creatures of the Dionysian procession as did the Etruscans, the latter being a great source of inspiration to him. This morning, I made a Madeline series of Satiricon-themed plates, drawn and coloured haphazardly, just so long as the spirit of Petronius dominates. Returning to my room where I write this note, I realized that this drawing had intoxicated me, got me drunk, taken me out of this world, much more than any alcohol.Jean CocteauThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A LARGE BRONZE DANCER'S HEADPIECE IN THE FORM OF A PANJURLI BHUTA (BOAR SPIRIT DEITY)South India, Kerala or Karnataka, 18th century. The mask finely cast in openwork to depict the head of a boar spirit with large pierced almond-shaped eyes, neatly incised arched brows, the mouth agape revealing teeth and tongue, the long pierced snout and lips detailed with beaded decorations, the head surmounted by an intricately cast crown; topped by six cobras above beaded and floral decorations as well as a row of numerous smaller snakes. Provenance: German trade.Condition: Good condition with old wear and some casting irregularities. Losses, nicks and dents, a bit of verdigris here and there, particularly to back and interior. Naturally grown patina overall.Weight: 5,475 g (excl. stand)Dimensions: Height 48 cm (excl. stand)This dramatic dancer's headpiece in the form of a boar's head was created in the southwestern coastal region of Tulu Nadu (in the modern Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka state and Kasaragod district of Kerala state), for ritual use in dance festivals propitiating and honoring the local tutelary spirit deities (bhuta). Hundreds of these elaborate community celebrations, called Dharmanema festivals, are held every year between February and May to venerate the regional pantheon of over 350 spirit deities. The boar spirit deity (Panjurli), one of the most powerful and important Genii Loci, is said to be borne of the forest and is thus particularly revered in this lush tropical region. He is also responsible for upholding righteousness through his identification as a manifestation of Vishnu, the supreme Hindu god of preservation and social order. This religious correlation is expressed by Panjurli's visual similarity to Varaha, the boar-headed avatar of Vishnu. Dancers' headpieces and masks are fashioned in a wide variety of iconographic forms and local artistic styles. They are typically quite large in size, and made in one of three primary media: wood, papier-mâche, and bronze. This headpiece is a tour de force of the genre because of its superb artistic quality, pronounced facial modeling, and complex ornamentation. With a modern stand. (2)Literature comparison: Compare a closely related copper alloy dancer's headpiece in the form of Panjurli Bhuta, 43.5 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.2005.49a-b. A SMALL WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF A LION, TANG DYNASTYPublished: Religion and Ritual, Michael B. Weisbrod, Inc., 1987, no. 19.China, 618-907. Finely carved, the beast seated on its haunches atop a rectangular plinth and facing forward with the mouth wide open in a ferocious roar, the fierce expression further marked by large bulging eyes. Three long strands of a split beard are smoothly carved on the chest below the chin in rounded relief. The pointed ears are laid back above the thick, subtly carved curls of the mane. Its tail curls around the figure's right side with the end lying over the back paw and below the chest.Provenance: Michael B. Weisbrod, Inc., New York, USA, acquired 1985 in the Hong Kong market. The collection of J. Abraham Cohen, New York, USA, acquired from the above. Michael B. Weisbrod, Inc., New York, USA, 2010, acquired from the above. A notable Canadian private collection, acquired from the above. Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than 50 years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod's Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada. The father-and-son team opened their New York location on Madison Avenue in 1977, and during the next 45 years the gallery held a significant number of exhibitions, selling to museums and private collectors across the globe, eventually adding further locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong.Condition: Superb condition, commensurate with age. Small losses and nicks, light scratches, old wear and weathering, some imperfections to the stone. Fine, naturally grown patina with an unctuous feel and a magnificent ivory color overall.Weight: 1,837 g Dimensions: Height 16.2 cmThe lion is well represented in Buddhist art of the Tang dynasty. Its roar was said to represent the dissemination of the Buddhist scriptures. In their role as guardian figures, lions can be found not only lining spirit roads which lead to imperial tombs, but also in pairs in tombs, such as the pair of small marble lions found guarding the front room of the underground hoard of Buddhist relics at the Famen Temple. See Famen Temple, Shanxi, 1990, pp. 164-167. This figure is stylistically related to other marble lions of Tang date that are also seated on a plinth, some facing forward, some with the mouth open.Literature comparison: The present marble lion bears a strong resemblance to one of the large stone guardian lions along the spirit path of the Qian Ling mausoleum, the tomb of Emperor Gao Zong and Empress Wu Zetian near Xi'an, illustrated by Qian, Out of China's Earth, page 156, and also by Siren, Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century, volume 4, pl. 431A. Allowing the difference in size and material, there is a marked similarity in the shape of the muzzle, the split beard and the collar of flesh between the shoulders and legs. The large stone lion is probably no later than AD 683, the year of Gao Zong's death.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 24 September 2020, lot 908 Price: USD 475,000 or approx. AN UNUSUAL SANDSTONE HEAD OF THE LUOHAN ASITA, SONG TO MING DYNASTYChina, 12th-15th century. The pale ochre sandstone vividly rendered with a bare head, the face revealing an expression of quiet power and compassion, framed by a pair of long bushy eyebrows extending to a wrinkled forehead and straight nose, with taut rounded cheeks above a gentle smile encircled by further wrinkles, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. Provenance: From a Swiss private collection. Condition: Good condition commensurate with age and overall exactly as expected from a stone sculpture with an age of half a millennia or more. Extensive wear with signs of natural weathering and erosion, some nicks, age cracks and losses. Solid naturally grown patina.Weight: 8.4 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 36 cm (incl. stand), 20.4 cm (excl. stand) With a modern metal stand.Asita means incomparably proper in Sanskrit, or of correct proportions in spirit and physique. According to legend, Asita was born with two long white eyebrows. The story was that in his previous life he was a monk who, though having tried very hard, could not attain enlightenment even at a ripe old age and had only two long white eyebrows left. After his death he was reincarnated as a human being. Animated portraits of luohans are rare, most examples being straightforward and somewhat idealized renditions. The trend of more naturalistic sculpture was initiated by Song dynasty artists, who also often depicted human figures with animated, expressive faces. This trend continued into the subsequent Yuan and Ming dynasties.Literature comparison: Two sandstone sculptures of arhats, one with a tiger, the other with a dragon, were discovered in 1980 at the Boshan Temple site in Fu County, Shaanxi Province, see H.
